Tabitha Jones has a beautiful cat name but her books are a broad sweep of many pets’ care. It was time to read “Cat Facts”, which was gifted to me about three decades ago.

The cover receives my compliments: a soft sandy-furred sweetheart and a beautiful, lithe, stretching calico.

The issue with these books, unless they are anecdotes from cat Moms & Dads, is stagnancy and irrelevancy for Canadians and most people. Almost without exception, books of facts are English or American derived, with statistics of their own about which we could not care less. If they were made for England or the USA, fine. This was presented as general cat facts and it would have been a piece of cake (or piece of cheese) to gather world statistics instead.

I enjoy compilations and know good ones the minute I begin reading them. Editors can be creative and engaging with their contents. This merely comprises lists. Except for including 2001 offerings in the entertainment heading, the same people and old chestnuts were quoted that have not changed in any cat book I have seen. In the year 2001, did a book still need to refer to the thousand year-old cat reverence of Egypt? Where is the inspiration? No true cat parent is interested in cat breeds or shows. Animal advocates abhor breeding and promote rescuing and adopting!

Flat lists are needlessly recycled. Canvas world leaders and celebrity artists of the present day and come up with NEW cat loving names and quotations! I admire people all the more, associating them as fellow feline families. I was thrilled to learn the Clintons’ had a family kitty, “Socks”, who was publically adored and lived to age 20. He is a gorgeous black & white! May new beloved kitties continue to become featured.
