Leon de Winter has been so unsubtle about sex and love in Zionoco, that one cannot be blamed for mistaking the author for a sex obsessed teenager. This in combination with the only other theme Leon de Winter seems interested in, that of the jewish identity crisis, will make Zionoco a very tiresome read indeed.

Impressive sex scene of housemaid screwed on the kitchen counter by hormone driven protagonist.

There are virtually no bad De Winter books, at least none that I am aware of, therefore there are two categories that I divide his writings into: good books and great books. I would count Zionoco among the good books as the usula page-turning ability has prevailed in this work also, making it an entertaining, quick and immersive read that can easily be conducted on a return flight + waiting time at the gate. Then again there were aspects of the story that felt finished to prematurely and in some parts maybe even careless (such as the ending, not an unusual blooper for De Winter). The story, as per usual, revolves around a dutch immigrant (of Jewish descent) that struggles with the interpretation of Jewishness in the modern world, the cruelties of the not so distant past, sexuality and calvinism, all built up on a story of complicated family matters. All in all an easy page-turner that I am not sorry to have read, but already looking forward to an even more immersive and somewhat more complex De Winter to inhale next.

Usually I love Leon de Winter's books and can not wait to read the next one... But this one was quiet a deception. I gave 2* because I really liked the absurdity of the story. But the rest... No, I wouldn't recommend this book.

Really great. Funny and original, like most of de Winter's books. All with an interesting Jewish theme.

The life of a rabbi seems not to be easy, neither in Amsterdam, New York, or Surinam.... In summary not the best book of de Winter I read so far.
