This is the second volume (so far five volumes have been published; the series remains unfinished) of a facing page Old French / Modern French edition of the medieval French Lancelot in prose. This volume (translation by Marie-Luce Chênerie) is of roughly the last third of the 13th century (c. 1220) BN fr 768 manuscript of the "noncyclic" prose Lancelot, one of the oldest extant editions of the prose Lancelot. The first two thirds of the same manuscript are published in volume I, Lancelot du Lac (translation by François Mosès).
This prose Lancelot is termed "non-cyclic" (or "pre-cyclic": critics differ on whether this version is anterior to the cyclic version) because it doesn't link to the birth of Galahad (in this version the quest for the Grail is destined to be accomplished by Perceval), considers the adulterous relationship between Lancelot and Guenièvre by the ideals of courtly love, and stands apart from the "Lancelot-Grail" or "Vulgate" cycle manuscript tradition. That being said, the first two thirds of the manuscript (i.e. the material in Tome I) are identical to what is found in the "cyclic" versions of the prose Lancelot.
This volume continues the story from Tome I to the end of the manuscript. It begins with Galehaut and Lancelot traveling together to Sorelois (the distinction between the "pre-cyclic" and "cyclic" versions starts at this point); it features a variety of adventures of Hector (on a quest to find Gauvain) and Gauvain (on a quest to find Lancelot); the physical consummation of Lancelot and Guenièvre's love; war with the Saxons (and Arthur hostage of the enchantress Camille); the madness of Lancelot cured by the Lady of the Lake. It also contains a short version of the "False Guinevere" story and ends abruptly with Galehaut's death.
The following volume in the series, Lancelot Du Lac T03 La Fausse Guenievre, steps backwards and gives the more developed version of the "False Guinevere" story (using the BN fr. 752 manuscript, emended by consulting 8 other manuscripts) that appears in this volume pp. 583-675.
