Serial-killer hunter Nick Shade built his legendary career chasing monsters—sadistic criminals with a gruesome thirst for death. When he rescued Montgomery detective Bobbie Gentry from horrific captivity and helped her reclaim her life, he didn't intend to be a hero. Or a target. But now a copycat murderer haunts him, and reuniting with Bobbie is his best chance at neutralizing the threat.
Bobbie can't forget the nightmares of her trauma—or the man who saved her. Working with Nick to outmaneuver the person behind a deadly vendetta feeds her hope that there's more to her world than ghosts and destruction. Maybe joining Nick's search for a killer is about gratitude. Maybe it's nothing more than cold revenge. But the only way they can protect themselves is to trust each other.

Two people want revenge. Detective Bobbie Gentry wants the man who killed her husband and young son and who kept her captive for several weeks. She was raped and tortured before being saved by Nick Shade.
Nick Shade is a hunter of serial killers. How own father was a serial killer who dispatched may men and women over the years. He was eventually caught .. nailed by his own son. The father now resides behind bars and will remain so for the rest of his life. Nick is scared of becoming the same kind of monster that resembles his father. He hunts serial killers, exposes their secret life and turns them over to the police.
Bobbie and Nick became close following her trauma, but then Nick disappeared. Out of the blue, the FBI calls Bobbie ... Nick's father wants to see her. He has information about Nick. What she is told when she consents is that there is a large group of like-minded serial killers who want Nick dead.
Meanwhile, bodies are falling all around Bobbie. One family is slaughtered .. the teenage daughter abducted. Another woman goes missing ..and then a third. These are copy cat crimes reminiscent of Nick's father. And the killings get closer to Bobbie.
And as expected, Nick shows up. Both of them become embroiled in solving these crimes and keeping Nick safe ... putting them both in life-threatening peril.
The first 2 books in this series are The Blackest Crimson and No Darker Place. I highly recommend reading these books in order. There are cliff hangers involved.
Debra Webb is one of my favorite authors. She writes terrific Romantic Suspense ... light on the romance, heavy on the mystery, crime, suspense. And with this book, she has surpassed my expectations.
The characters are believable, and situations are highly suspenseful. I'm waiting patiently for the 3rd book in this series.
Many thanks to Debra Webb, Harlequin (US & Canada), Netgalley for the digital copy of A DEEPER GRAVE. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
A bit of background on Bobbie Gentry and more on Nick Shade - bodies are dropping and young girls/women are being snatched. Her fellow cops are being suspicious of just about everyone, including Bobbie and the replacement cop!
So glad I stumbled on this author and this series!
So sick.. So creepy.. So depraved.. And so addicting. A killer orchestrating another killer along with manipulating the lives of others.
The first two books dealt with Detective Bobbie Gentry who spent months recovering from both the physical and mental damage that the Storyteller killer did to her. She had lost her will to live but wasnt going to die before exacting justice on the man who killed her family and ruined her life. She was aided on this quest by Nick Shade who was the son of a famed serial-killer and who had made it his life calling to hunt down serial-killers and bring them to justice. During their time bringing the Storyteller down Nick made Bobbie want to live again. On the flip side Bobbie also managed to prick a hole in Nick's hardened heart and made him start to care – something he cannot afford to do not only because of his job but also because if his father found out he had a weakness he would exploit it.
The main story in this one is a killer is on the loose in Mongomery again and he is mirroring previous killers Nick has brought down. At first its believed its Bobbie the killer is taunting but as the story moves along its clear that is not the case and its Nick who is being played like a puppet.
We get more information about Nick's father and his life as a serial-killer and I can certainly see one heck of a showdown coming in future books as his father is a very intelligent cunning killer. It was good to see Bobbie back in fighting form and by the end of this book she's made the decision she is also going to fight for Nick whether he wants her to or not. I hope its not a long wait till the next book.
Deeply riveting, 'A Deeper Grave’ tightens the noose on Bobbie Gentry and Nick Shade, yet draws circles around the whole burgeoning mystery as an unseen or unknown puppeteer yanks the strings of all those involved…towards an endgame that remains unclear. It’s clear that this series isn’t a simple whodunnit sort, but Debra Webb certainly cycles through the murder mystery tropes, then scrambles them so that a copycat serial killer is only a loose string in a larger web that ensnares. Like in most crime drama series, you get the feeling that things are building up somehow, somewhere, yet it’s not all revealed yet, which is probably the perfect kind of cliffhanger ending that will only come with the dramatic finale. Very light on the romance and focused on the suspense, it’s an excellent read all around really and tightly plotted, except for the fact that I couldn’t get my head around how the characters never caught onto the very obvious clues about the copycat killer.
Bobbie Gentry is finding her feet once again, though loss is a constant reminder of how much she has yet to lose. I liked her strength, her self-awareness and how she doesn’t deny her need for Nick both physically and emotionally. That she doesn’t give up on him in the end, makes me beyond eager to read their closing chapter together.
However, I find that I’ve simply blinked and missed Nick—the other protagonist who remains so shadowy that I can’t get a grasp on his character—considering his importance in the book. Yet he remains a peripheral character given the very few scenes written in his POV and the glimpses we get of his Hannibal Lecter father don’t quite do justice to his tortured hero’s psyche. Multiple POVs instead, tell the story of the people in Montgomery PD’s broken unit and of Bobbie’s healing mental state and whether it is Webb’s intention for Nick to keep that intriguing distance from Bobbie and the reader, I’m hoping the third book—and what’s presumably his final reckoning—will strip him bare.
It’s a series I’d wholly recommend, though it probably isn’t for those who want the requisite amount of angst, emotional navel-gazing and deep introspection that come with the romance portion. Yet as much as I wish for the latter, I can’t wait for Nick’s and Bobbie’s paths to converge properly this time around and the anticipation for the next book is already making me anxious.
Started off with the second book of the series. Seems to be happening to me a lot, ha! This book was great! Hope to start the series from the beginning at some point.
Overall enjoyed the second installment more than the first. Less rape which is great Same amount of senseless death of people close to the h and I don’t love that. The H and h have sexy times (fFTB) We have zero history of H sexual history or when he was last w anyone- which is fine but I would like to know he hasn’t been w anyone since meeting the h. Since it’s been almost a year.
The story is engaging
This author needs a bit more romance in her stories it only adds to the fullness of the characters but she always keeps the romance to the background. Sad This can never be a 4-5 star for me for that fact alone
A frightfully grim and horrendously ghastly story that made me want to double check the locks, and sleep with the lights on, because the terror, the fear, the morbid images, they seep into your mind with each scene passing while you read, and the presence of evil is palpable and true. The Shades of Death is getting darker and more twisted and sinister with each installment to the series. This story with its grisly plot twists and unmerciful manipulations by the criminal masterminds is fascinating in the oddest way. Like I was spellbound I kept turning the pages because I needed to know that there is good left in the world, that there is salvation from the savage serial killers who enjoy their work, that they will be captured, that there is justice left and it will win. Obviously, this story is not for the faint at heart. it had my stomach turning several times. It is just as gory as it sounds. But for the thriller lovers, this masterpiece is a must read. The author captures the goodness, the light of a human nature in the same breath as she shows the rotting murkiness of the vile a person is capable of. The balance and the boundaries between the good and the evil are not as apparent or as clear as one might think. The trust for the honesty and integrity is put to the test.
Nick Shade and Bobbie Gentry are brought together again and are the target for the manipulations. The connection between them is tangible and obvious, yet due to the circumstances fragile and frail. There is no denial that they are important to each other, that they deeply care for each other, but as that seems to be the weapon that is used against them, and used as a reason to kill innocents, it is obvious the delicate ties that bind them needs to be severed. "They were two damaged people frantically tempting survive without suffering further injury"
A brilliantly told intense story that captured my mind, took my breath away, and my mind into a darkness I didn't want to knowledge existed. It is as ferocious and cruel as it is brutal and savage. The author boldly makes the law as vulnerable to be victims as the civilians, no one safe, not one person involved is left intact and secure. As the story ends we are left to wait for a next installment to see if there is redemption, if there is salvation, if the good will win. My hope is, this wait is not too long... ~ Five Spoons
Thank you Debra Webb and NetGalley for the ARC of A Deeper Grace by Debra Webb that I read and reviewed. This was the second book in the Shades of Death Series and it picks up two months after the first book. Bobbie is dealing with life better after the death of her husband and son and she is living life again. In this book she comes face to face with another serial killer that will test her skills as a police officer and bring Nick Shade the serial killer hunter who saved her and made her feel again back into her life. This book was excellent. I love the chemistry between Bobbie and Nick and I could read books with them in them all day long. The story line in this book was very interesting and even though I was pretty sure who I knew the killer was half through the book I did not want it to be my suspect so I kept second guessing myself until the end. This book had it all. Gruesome murders, tear jerking moments, hot romance, a great plot and a perfect set-up for the next book. I am really not sure what more you could ask for. Webb outdid herself in this book. I am giving A Deeper Grave five out of five stars.
Thank you Debra Webb and Netgalley for the chance to read an advanced copy of this amazing book! Talk about breath taking....how about edge of your seat....spine tingling...there are really not enough words to describe this book or this series...it will truly blow you away!
Nick Shade and Detective Bobbie Gentry are reunited as Nick is lured back to Montgomery to help Bobbie stop a copycat killer that is painting death around the city in images that can only be found in the darkest of nightmares. But there is more going on here than meets the eye and Bobbie is determined to keep Nick from being the final target!
This book is so well written with suspense building as you turn each page and characters that come alive with each clock ticking minute! This book makes me want to shout from the rooftops about how good it is. If you like a thriller then you really have to read this book....and this series! Mind blowing good!
I have read several of the books in this author's Faces of Evil series. I really enjoyed reading those books. While, I did not read the first book in this new series, I had no problem jumping right into this book. Bobby is a strong character. The little bit I got to know about her, made me that more intrigued to know more. Then there is the dynamics between her and Nick. They are not lovers but the bond they share spilled over blood keeps me in the game. Nick has mystery surrounding him. He is like an onion. As each layer was revealed, more questions were left. Just like the big one left towards the end of the story.
The first half of the story was more about the characters. This was nice in a way for me as I was able to get familiar with them having not read the first book. Yet, after a while, I did want the story to pick up the pace and get more focused on the serial killer. Luckily, this happened in the later second half of the story. There were some face offs. I know that Bobby does not go down without a fight. I look forward to following this series.
I tried to read this as slowly as I could. BUT holy cow do I love this series. AND I never thought I could love a series by Debra Webb more than Faces of Evil but hot diggity dog...THIS. This series is epic.
Bobbi is damaged and so strong and dedicated. And Nick...another damaged character that believes he's not worthy. And together they are unbeatable and combustible. There chemistry is off the charts. And it looks like they are going to be in the race of their lives. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
If you like dark, twisted and epic! You MUST READ this series! Debra Webb keeps getting better and better!
So have a few problems with this book. First I say that I do love the H and h. My problem is that the author had no problem giving us every little disgusting detail about the brutal murders and the rapes that took place in this book and the last book but when it came to long await moments between the H and h where basically given a fade to back. I don't mind that but if you're going to do that there you shouldn't be giving me details about the rape scene. For me that was disturbing and not necessary.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I received a copy from NetGalley for my honest opinion. This is the second installment of the Shades of Death series by this author. It's been six months since Bobby Gentry, a detective in the Montgomery Police Department, put an end to any more stories by the infamous Storyteller serial killer. She's still struggling with the deaths of her beloved husband, son, partner, and missing Nick Shade. In the book, Bobbie has a young new partner that transferred to The MPD. Their first murder together is a horrific murder of a husband and wife. Their young son is eventually found but their daughter remains missing. The murders start piling up and they realize they have another sadistic serial killer on their hands. Bobby gets summoned to visit Nick Shade's father in prison. His father being one of the worst serial killers in history. He claims Nick is the target this time. After all this time with no word, Nick finally shows up. Can Bobbie keep Nick alive or is this all a smoke screen for some other nefarious killer? Read this book. It is amazing. Debra Webb is my favorite suspense writer. No one can do twisted quite like she can. If I could add more stars I would. Make sure you have the time to read the entire book in one setting because, trust me, once you start, you can't stop. Another winner by Debra Webb!!!
This is the second book in Shades of Death series that includes Det. Bobbi Gentry and Nick Shade. It is another page turner as you try to figure out where the killer is going to strike next and how it involves a serial killer that is locked up in a maximum security prison. I love the series and the way the story shows the weakness and strength of the characters a definite must read.
Ms. Webb has outdone herself once again with A DEEPER GRAVE. This story will keep you on the edge of your seat. It's incredibly fast paced, it's emotional, and very intense. A complex and convincing book that had me hooked from the first line all the way until the last. This fast-paced thriller is the definition of a page-turner! You can’t wait to find out what happens next. Highly recommended!
I absolutely love this series. I couldn't put this book down. The story just keeps getting better with each installment. If you are a fan of Debra's this series is a must read. It's a bone chilling read that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
When I thought Debra Webb's novels couldn't get more suspenseful, A Deeper Grave, the next book in the Shades of Death series, blew my mind. A Deeper Grave brings back together Bobby Gentry, survivor of a heinous serial killer, the Storyteller, and Nick Shade, hunter of serial killers. While the possibility of romance between the tool hums in the background, the real action in the book revolves around finding a copycat serial killer in Bobby's Alabama town.
With the insertion of Nick's Dad, infamous serial killer Randolph Weller, there are so many twists and turns in A Deeper Grave that I never figured out whodunit until the big reveal.
I really appreciated the building of the psychology of the killer and how it contrasted with Randolph Weller's modus operandi. The glimpse Debra gives us into the police work it takes to catch a killer was quite interesting as well.
I highly recommend Shades of Death - well written and suspenseful. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
A DEEPER GRAVE is the next installment in Debra Webb’s Shades of Death series. Webb introduces Bobbie Gentry giving readers details of the trauma she is coping with relating to her the kidnapping, rape, and torture from a sadistic serial killer. Bobbie struggles with her efforts to put her nightmares and experiences behind her and move on with her life. Readers meet Nick Shade returning to help Bobbie capture a new killer on the loose in Montgomery, Alabama. Webb gives readers Nick’s backstory including details of his reputation of pursuing the capture of serial killers who continue alluding authorities. Nick avoids developing friends due to his father’s criminal history. Law enforcement either praise or disapprove of his efforts. Most disapprove of Nick’s connection to a serial killer history. Nick has made it clear he has no desire to develop a relationship with Bobbie, but occurring events seem to bring them together.
Bobbie investigates a series of copycat murders of a similar to the person responsible for attacking her. Bobbie receives a request to meet with Nick’s father at his prison. Webb places readers on Bobbie’s shoulder, so they experience Bobbie’s thoughts and feeling about meeting Nick’s serial killer father. She is stunned when he tells Nick’s life is in danger. The fast moving storyline focusing capturing the copycat killer becomes more important to Bobbie after learning the end goal of the killer is to eliminate Nick.
The author creates several support characters both good and bad and shares their history and the roles each character plays when they enter the storyline. Webb changes the story’s direction using several subplots adding twists and turns for the readers to follow. Readers close to Nick learn of his concerns of Bobbie’s safety. Bobbie’s investigation sees the brutality of the murders increasing similar to the MO of Nick’s father. Each new killing seems to draw Bobbie closer to the killer. Nick knows the killer is using Bobbie as bait to kill Nick. Bobbie refuses to remove herself from the investigation. THE DEEPER GRAVE has many surprises leading to the story’s conclusion. Nick and Bobbie are both in jeopardy. Webb builds the suspense and intrigue keeping her readers on the edge of their seats. Unfolding events keep Webb’s readers’ interest high. The author never lets up on the thrills increasing the intensity of the action towards an ending that takes everyone’s breath away. A DEEPER GRAVE is a must read.
The latest Debra Webb novel, A Deeper Grave, is not for the faint of heart. The suspense builds from the last novel and continues to grow and almost borders on horror. Webb clearly has an endgame with this series and it isn’t going to be easy getting there. Webb shows no mercy for established and new characters alike; this has been a hallmark of this series so far. I’m definitely hooked and can’t wait to see where the next book takes us.
This book, start right off with two murders and an abduction of a young women. If you haven’t read this series you really need to. A little back story, In the Blackest Crimson and No Darker Place, we meet Bobbie Gentry, who is a police detective with the Montgomery Police Department. Bobbie was working on a case, that would turn her world upside down. After seeing the horrific death of her husbands and finding out that her son is also gone. With everything that has happen to Bobbie, she now a change person forever. Nothing will ever be the same for her. It is as if the nightmares will never end.
Fast forward she is back on the job after about six-month leave. Bobbie is still trying to recover from the murder of her husband and son. Bobbie, is also dealing with the mental and physical emotion of what has happen in her life.
She is now working on a case were the mother and father have been murder, and their teenage daughter has been abducted. The killer doesn’t know that their son is still alive because he was supposed to be spending the night at a friend house. But he decided to hide in the attic. In the meantime, there are more women that will become missing. Bobbie, starts to think that this case feels very familiar as if these crimes are like Nick father. But there is just one problem Nick father is in prison, but Bobbie really believe that they’re dealing with a copycat series killer. But the more that Bobbie, works this case she is feeling that there are more than just one killer.
Nick shade, is someone whom she has started a friendship with. Whom she has started to put her trust in him. It is funny how Nick Shade, always show up at the right time. Nick has found out that his father, whom is a serial killer had requested that Bobbie, visit him in jail. His father wanted Bobbie, to know that Nick and she are going to become victim very soon.
You will have to get the book yourself to find out what happens, and who is doing the killing. Debra Webb, has a gift of telling her stories. Sometimes she takes you on a never-ending ride. Because this story has so many twist and turn, that it leaves you in such a very confusing state of mind. Debra, has a way of writing that you can’t put the book down until the very last page. I can’t wait to see what is going to happen in the next book.
Debra Webb is one of those authors who always delivers a suspenseful thriller. Her books are very addicting and hard to put down. A Deeper Grave has Detective Bobbie Gentry finding hope again, to have a life, if not a normal life. She is Nick Shades weakness and he returns to Montgomery and Bobbie when she is faced with copycat murderer who is trying to get his attention. The fact that she has gained Nicks attention intrigues Nicks serial killer father. In this series, I have a sense of a buildup of a powerful finale. A well plotted story, fantastic lead characters as well as a variety of secondary characters tie it all together. The first 2 books in this series are The Blackest Crimson (prequel) and No Darker Place (book 1). This is a series that should be read in order.
This book is horrifically scary and terrifyingly eerie! Det. Bobbie Gentry is now working quite a few murders, apparently committed by not one but, two or more, copycat serial killers. The more she and her crew work to clear possible suspects, the more of them pop up. Her newest friend and, at times, confidant, Nick Shade, shows up to help with the investigation, especially after he finds out that his father, a prolific serial killer, has asked for a jail visit with Bobbie to tell her that she and Nick will be the final victims. The farther I got into this book, the more confused I became as to who the real killer or killers actually were. I read this book in one sitting because I simply could not stop! Ms. Webb continues to blow my mind with this series.
Thank you Debra Webb and Netgalley for the digital copy of this book in return for my honest opinion . Blood , guts , a depraved killer ! Detective Bobbie Gentry is back with Nick Shade , a serial killer hunter that plays by his own rules . Nick's father was a serial killer that committed horrific acts on his victims before being turned in by Nick , caught by police and sent to prison . There is a killer in Montgomery kidnapping young women , slaughtering people and committing vile acts on his victims . Is he working alone or is someone pulling his strings ? Now he is coming after people close to Bobbie . Masterfully crafted thriller by Debra Webb . This book can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend you first read The Blackest Crimson , Bobbie's story . No Darker Place is ( Shades Of Death #1 ) Awesome series ! You won't be disappointed . I leave reviews on Goodreads, Amazon , Facebook and Twitter.
terrifying, captivating, thrilling, dark and suspenseful. What a ride reading this book. I can not wait to see where Ms. Webb takes us in this series. Is Bobbie Gentry going to get revenge for the murder of her husband and child ? Is she going to get past her rape and torture? What is Nick Shade going to do about his serial killer father and his feelings for Bobbie? These are questions I can't wait to find out. Ms. Webb has woven a mystery I can't wait to unravel. I can't express in words how much I recommend this book . If you love a highly crafted thriller, this is it.
“A Deeper Grave” by Debra Webb Debra Webb, does it again. “A Deeper Grave” is a masterful, spine tingling, hair raising work of suspenseful drama. As you will notice, this is a verified purchase review from Amazon, I purchased the paperback copy of this book.
Fellow readers: If you are familiar with my book reviews, I never delve into plots. You will find plenty of reviews doing just that. I am here to tell you that you will not be disappointed if you read this engaging, thrilling saga. This is the third book in the “Shades of Death” series. If you haven’t read “The Blackest Crimson” or “No Darker Place” do yourself a favor and read them first so you will have some continuity in this series. It’s not necessary but you will then grow with the complex characters Mrs. Webb paints before your eyes.
Now, if you like this series and you haven’t read the 11-book saga of “Faces of Evil”, you are going to be in for a pleasant surprise.
As usual, another gripping, can’t put down, bone chilling 5-star thriller from Debra Webb. Please keep them coming, Deb. Boston Bob
Very gruesome, very suspenseful.....excellent!!!! I'm afraid we haven't really seen gruesome with Weller "The Picasso Killer" being out there, he reminds me a bit of Dr. Hannibal Lector - the way he talks and the fact that he's a psychiatrist. I can't believe the utter stupidity of some people - the nurse, Deana. I know its just fiction but there are people out there like them. Can't wait to find out what happens with Bobbie and Nick - two broken souls with so much in common! As much as I love Bobbie and Nick working together I can't help but think that Bobbie and Jess (Faces of Evil) would have made a very formidable pairing....oh well....just a thought.
Nick Shade hunts serial killers. Bobbie Gentry is a Detective for the Montgomery Alabama police dept. Randolph Weller is a serial killer who was turned in to police by his son Nick Shade. When people are being killed in Montgomery with the same signature as Weller Bobbie is put on the case. When Weller summons Bobbie to the prison and Nick come to Montgomery again more bodies start showing up. As Nick and Bobbie try to figure out the killer and stop him things really start heating up. This one is full of suspense from the first page until the very last.
This Series keeps getting better and better I love this book! My heart hurt for Bobbie and I really wanted to hug her as a mom. It was emotionally charged and fast paced.Kept me in my chair from the first page till the last I couldnt put it down. This is by far one of the best books Debra Webb has written. I cant wait to read more she has out done her self
I love suspense stories and this one is exceptional. It kept on bringing more twists and turns and thoroughly captured my curiosity and excitement. I've read this author before and want to read more. I think the entire series of "A shades of death novels" is on my want to read list now.
Nick Shade is a fantastic character! I absolutely love him. Bobbie is the perfect partner for him if they can just get these murders solved and try to find a common ground again. Edge of your seat the entire book!
