A Regency Yuletide

Rate this book
After a disappointing season in London, Sophie Davenport returns home without a marriage proposal. No sooner does she settle back into her country life than she learns her uncle has arranged for her to marry the local vicar’s son, a respectable and utterly forgettable man. He’s returning home immediately after the Christmas holiday and they will wed. She sets about making this last Christmas with just she and her mother memorable. Jeremy Wyatt hatches a plan to help his friend Thomas and his love, Emma, escape to Gretna Green and marry before her father comes after them. What he’s really doing is avoiding heading to his parents’ home, where he is the son who is always making the wrong choices. But their carriage becomes hopelessly mired in the mud from the incessant rains so Jeremy sets off to find shelter for them at the first house he comes to. Sophie welcomes the wet and weary travelers, and her mother agrees to house them temporarily until they can free the carriage. Sophie forms a bond not only with Emma, but with Jeremy. However despite the sparks they ignite in each other, they have to maintain their separate paths. But love and mistletoe have a way of upsetting even the best-laid plans.

A Sweet Christmas Romance

Who can resist romance at Christmas? In this sweet romance, Sophie Davenport believes she must surrender to the fate laid out by her uncle. But on a rainy December night, Jeremy Wyatt appears at her door in desperate need of shelter for himself and his friends. Sophie is immediately smitten and Jeremy is captivated. The cozy cottage in the December storm is the perfect setting for their attraction to grow. But when Jeremy abruptly leaves, Sophie resigns herself to the fate she has been handed. Will she have a happy Christmas? I love the playful, passionate relationship between Sophie and Jeremy. I also enjoyed Evelyn Davenport, Sophie’s scheming mother. I’ve read Ms. Lower’s Cotillion Ball series, and love the way she intertwines romance with historical events. Her new venture into Regency meets the high standard she has set for all her books. A perfect Christmas romance.

OMG, keep the nice holiday historical romances coming!! This one was no exception. Although the love between the main characters was too insta for my taste, I did not mind it. Surprisingly! It's because Jeremy and Sophie were realistically portrayed, each having their own doubts about this insta-love. I found the character of Jeremy to be really refreshing. He was not a rake, admittedly, but he did have thoughts like all other men of his age of that time. And the fact that he chose not to act upon them showed his true intentions toward Sophie. It was beautiful, all of it! Such a short novella, but it packs quite a punch (in my opinion at least)!

This is, hands down, my favorite Lower read, and I've followed her career closely, devouring everything she puts out. Lower's foray into the Regency world knocked my socks off. There were no growing pains here; Sophie and Jeremy's story read like it was penned by a seasoned Regency author, and I can only hope that Lower has now caught the Regency bug and we'll see many more installments set in this reader-favorite era in the future.

This short, sweet novella is the perfect thing to get a reader into the Christmas spirit. Lower weaves charming Regency traditions (such as Yule logs and the tradition of plucking berries from mistletoe anytime one steals a kiss) in the same way that she interwove history in her Civil War novels: the reader learns something without knowing it. Sophie and Jeremy's love story is endearing. They are an excellent match for each other (and, can I say, it's lovely to read a Regency in which the hero is NOT a duke), and Sophie's private struggles against the restraints on women in the time period as well as her recent heartbreak with the loss of her father made me her advocate within one chapter.

This one was a sweet read. There was little heat in it, aside from a couple of smoldering kisses, but that's okay. This one was more a Christmastime blossoming of love. If you're looking for a nice, safe, and, yes, I'll say it again, sweet novella, give this one a read.

It was interesting to learn from Ms Lower’s profile at Amazon she has written a series of novels with American settings and themes, and how Regency Yuletide is her first English Regency romance.

What I liked best about this sweet novella was the way the author threw London’s seasoned soirées out of the carriage window. Instead a bleak Cumbrian landscape is where the heroine’s story opens the door on her life. It was a nice change to meet a heroine who cringed in expectation of a forced second season of attendance at soirees in the City of London. And thank goodness Ms Lower avoided a popular and ludicrous plot of young suitors on wild chargers in Hyde Park in pursuit of rebellious heroines. Wise move Ms Lower to steer away from that old trope, and her version of an elopement plot has a refreshing twist to it as well. Poor Sophie is a country girl at heart, and destined as wife to the local vicar’s son. I say poor Sophie because I was rooting for excitement to explode into her life. And Sophie’s dismal prospects then turn for the better when a young man rocks up on her doorstep asking for help. Enter the hero Jeremy who has two companions stranded in a coach and its bogged down in mud and snow. Better still it’s Christmas and with a runaway couple heading for Gretna Green a cottage in the middle of nowhere is suddenly a godsend. And within a short while and seasonal charity Sophie’s little haven of tranquillity becomes a hotbed of lusty dreams, joyous cheer, and budding romance. Oh what a lovely time is had by all. But all good things must come to an end and it does. Poor Sophie is left pondering what if? And after a little heartache and soul searching that what if comes full circle and Sophie has her happy ending. I did like this story very much. It’s simple. It’s sweet. It’s a charming yuletide tale. Well done Ms Lower. Cumbria is a bleak place.

Unsurprisingly, Sophie Davenport is another strong female heroine character out of the mind of historical author Becky Lower. Willing to marry the local vicar-in-training – a respectable, but forgettable man – to ensure she and her mother are provided for, Sophie does not expect to find love. Rather, she counts down the days to her wedding with little care, while focusing her passion on caring for the indigents through the Female Visiting Society.

Jeremy Wyatt of Derbyshire is fleeing London for Gretna Green, determined to help his friends elope. As the weather deteriorates and their carriage is brought to a halt in the muddy road, Jeremy goes knocking on Sophie’s door. Their small party is invited to stay at the cottage for a couple of nights, and we are the better for it!

This is a delightful romantic tale that is perfect for a chilly afternoon at home. Pour yourself a hot cup of cocoa and curl up with your most comfy blanket. You’ll find yourself immersed in this Regency tale to its finish – and all the way relishing the little details that Lower is so well known for.

I love Christmas stories and I love romances and Becky Lower has given us both in her new novella, A Regency Yuletide. Our heroine, Sophie Davenport, lives in a country cottage with her mother. They used to live in the estate but the death of the earl caused the title to pass to a distant cousin. His daughter and widow are now at the mercy of a stranger who wants to pass them off to anyone else. Since Sophie's one season in London did not result in a marriage offer, the new earl has decided that she should marry the vicar's son. Sophie hardly knows the young man but has agreed to this arrangement since he seems nice enough. Sophie has never been in love. But one rainy night a handsome stranger knocks at her door. Jeremy had been aiding and abetting his best friend in a mad dash to Gretna Green with his beloved. Unfortunately (or, as the case may be, fortunately), their carriage was hopelessly mired in the mud and the romantic adventure was stalled. The travelers are given shelter in the small cottage and lives are changed. This is a delightful romp of a story and one that I will surely read again as Christmas approaches. Because I do love a Christmas romance.

Uncaged Review: A very charming regency with enough of a story to pull me right in and read from start to finish in one setting. Even though it’s novella length, it’s still a very nice addition to anyone’s holiday reading fare. Even though Jeremy is footloose and free, he hatches a plan to get his best friend Thomas and his lady, Emma spirited off to get married, as Emma’s father is trying to marry her off to an undesirable older man. After their carriage gets stuck in heavy ruts from rains, they find shelter in a cottage with a lady and her daughter Sophie. Jeremy is struck by the simple beauty and intelligence of Sophie, and with a meddling mother afoot, they get more alone time than is really proper.

The author did a wonderful job, drawing you into the story with enough description to set you inside the parlor, instead of looking through a window. The romance is quick, but it works. This is a nice feel good story perfect for the season and historical romance lovers. Reviewed by Cyrene

Okay...so I was expecting a lil' bit of hanky panky, and only got some deep kissing and a dude with a boner. Still, this was an engaging Regency holiday tale. I really liked it!
