روایت کوئلیو از داستان‌های قرون وسطی شروع می‌شود، حوزه‌ی وسیعی را در بر می‌گیرد و به تجربیات شخصی او می‌رسد. او این بار ما را به نقاط مختلف جهان از چین، ژاپن ایران و هندوستان تا آمریکا، اسپانیا و دورترین صحراهای آفریقا می‌برد. انگیزه‌ای فرا ملیتی و مذهبی سبب خلق این اثر شده است و می‌توان عرفان اسلامی‌را در حکایاتش دید. این نویسنده با واقع‌گرایی، عرفان، حکایات و پندهایش را آن‌گونه بازگو می‌کند که در زندگی روزمره‌مان حضور دارد.

About the author

The Brazilian author PAULO COELHO was born in 1947 in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Before dedicating his life completely to literature, he worked as theatre director and actor, lyricist and journalist. In 1986, PAULO COELHO did the pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella, an experience later to be documented in his book The Pilgrimage. In the following year, COELHO published The Alchemist. Slow initial sales convinced his first publisher to drop the novel, but it went on to become one of the best selling Brazilian books of all time. Other titles include Brida (1990), The Valkyries (1992), By the river Piedra I sat Down and Wept (1994), the collection of his best columns published in the Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo entitle Maktub (1994), the compilation of texts Phrases (1995), The Fifth Mountain (1996), Manual of a Warrior of Light (1997), Veronika decides to die (1998), The Devil and Miss Prym (2000), the compilation of traditional tales in Stories for parents, children and grandchildren (2001), Eleven Minutes (2003), The Zahir (2005), The Witch of Portobello (2006) and Winner Stands Alone (to be released in 2009). During the months of March, April, May and June 2006, Paulo Coelho traveled to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella in 1986. He also held surprise book signings - announced one day in advance - in some cities along the way, to have a chance to meet his readers. In ninety days of pilgrimage the author traveled around the globe and took the famous Transiberrian train that took him to Vladivostok. During this experience Paulo Coelho launched his blog Walking the Path - The Pilgrimage in order to share with his readers his impressions. Since this first blog Paulo Coelho has expanded his presence in the internet with his daily blogs in Wordpress, Myspace & Facebook. He is equally present in media sharing sites such as Youtube and Flickr, offering on a regular basis not only texts but also videos and pictures to his readers. From this intensive interest and use of the Internet sprang his bold new project: The Experimental Witch where he invites his readers to adapt to the screen his book The Witch of Portobello. Indeed Paulo Coelho is a firm believer of Internet as a new media and is the first Best-selling author to actively support online free distribution of his work.

سعدی شیرازی پسر بچه ای بیش نبود و در مجلس پدرش که مشغول خواندن قرآن برای گروهی بود نشسته بود.بعد از مدتی دید که همه مردم به خواب رفته اند و پدر در حال تلاوت است. به پدرش گفت:این مردم هیچ موقع نخواهند توانست کلام خدا را بفهمند.
پدرش گفت:تو ایمان خودت را داشته باش و راه خودت را برو...هر کسی به یک روش با خدا حرف میزند و شاید اینان در خواب با خدا حرف می زنند...
خوابیدن آنها در موقع تلاوت بسیار بهتر از قضاوت عجولانه تو بود و من ترجیح می دادم که تو در خواب بودی اما اینطور قضاوت نمی کردی..

اين كتاب سير داستاني ندارد، بلكه شامل داستان کوتاه است كه پائولو كوئيلو از كشورها و فرهنگ هاي مختلف دنيا
انتخاب كرده است. از اين لحاظ شبيه كتاب هاي ديگرش مانند مكتوب و مكتوب 2 است
این داستان زیبا رو نیمدونم در کدام یکی از کتابهایش خواندم


یک مربی سیرک با استفاده از حیله ی بسیار ساده ای موفق به کنترل و نگاه داری از یک فیل در بند کشیده می شود. وقتی حیوان هنوز کوچک می باشد، یکی از پاهایش را به تنه ی درخت بسیار محکمی می بندد. هرچه که حیوان مزبور برای آزادی خود تلاش کند، موفق نخواهد شد. پس از مدت زمان کوتاهی، او کم کم با این ایده خو می گیرد که آن تنه ی درخت از او قویتر است. هنگامی که فیل دیگر بالغ شده و دارای نیرویی غیر قابل تصور و فوق العاده می باشد، فقط کافی است طنابی را به یکی از پاهای فیل بسته و او را در یک بیشه زار رها کنند. چرا که او حتی سعی در آزاد کردن خودش هم نخواهد کرد. برای آنکه دفعات بسیاری را به خاطر می آورد که سعی و تلاش خود را کرده اما موفق نشده است. همانند فیلها، پاهای ما انسانها نیز به چیز بسیار شکننده و ظریفی بسته شده است. اما چون از زمان کودکی، با زور و قدرت آن تنه ی درخت خو گرفته ایم، جرأت انجام کاری را به خودمان نمی دهیم. بدون آن که بدانیم که فقط انجام یک حرکت ساده ی شجاعانه کافی است تا تمامی آزادیمان را کشف کنیم

Wow. Some of these stories are a bit banal, but others made me think. The moral is clear at the end of each story, but it doesn't feel preachy. It feels eye-opening. Some of these I want to print out some day and frame merely because they're clever and true and helpful.

I found myself a bit nicer after plowing through most of the first volume and all of the second. Perhaps one should be permanently reading these stories, just to become a bit better by being reminded of it in clever ways.

نسخه فارسی این کتاب رو وقتی 9-8 ساله بودم برادرم بهم هدیه داد و اولین خوانش من از کوئیلو محسوب میشه درواقع :)))) کتاب مجموعه داستان‌های کوتاهیه که هرکدوم موضوعات مختلفی دارن و راجع به یه نکته اخلاقی صحبت می‌کنن؛ درواقع همونطور که از اسمش مشخصه مناسب برای پدران و پدربزرگاست که بخوان برای نوه هاشون روایت کنن :دی
‌البته نسخه انگلیسی کتاب 2 جلدیه اما فکر می‌کنم نسخه فارسیش بصورت گزینشی داستان‌هارو از این دو جلد گردآوی کرده و مجموعا هم یک جلده؛ ترجمه آرش حجازی و انتشارات کاروان.

درست فکر کردن یعنی چه؟
یعنی بدانی چه گونه از ذهن و قلب، از نظم و احساس استفاده کنی. وقتی چیزی را بخواهیم؟ زندگی ما را به طرف آن راهنمایی می کند، اما از راه هایی که انتطارش را نداریم. خیلی پیش می آید که گیج بشویم، چون این راه ها ما را به شگفت می اورند بنابراین فکر می کنیم در مسیر اشتباهیم. برای همین می گویم: بگذار احساست تو را راهنمایی کند، اما برای ادامه ی این راه، نظم داشته باش

(I read an English translation but wasn't able to find it on Goodreads.) I enjoyed these little vignettes taken from various religions, mythologies, philosophers and life experiences. Each teaches a lesson in how to live life - how to live morally, justly, or to find satisfaction. God plays a large role in many, but I chose to interpret that as peace where possible. I would like to read more by this author.

Coelho has assembled some of his own short stories (some as short as one page) that are accessible to readers of varied ages -- and holographic in the sense that each piece of work can stand by itself to help the reader view a complete picture of humanity, without regard to angle. I appreciate his assembly of this work, and the compositions serve to act as good "mental vitamins" that can be shared with others or digested privately.

These short stories are simple but complex enough to contemplate on. As they are simple illustrations, interesting enough, and some are imaginative, this book is suitable for children and grandchildren. As they are complex enough, this book could open your eyes to The Path. Definitely, this book will be a life-enrichment experience to share and discuss with anyone even the youngsters.

Some of these stories were good and some of them, not so good.
All in all I think this book will probably be underwhelming for most adults, but I really see it's value for children - each story could be the starting point for conversations around morals and/or aiming to introduce kids to philosophy.

Can I rip up the pages of my book and frame most of the stories? No? Okay.

Each story has its own moral and mostly I find myself saying, 'What?!' or 'Oh.." Every story is just one or two pages long, very useful when you want to take a break from reading about bitches yapping to each other and whining about popularity and stuff.
