I’m wrong for her in all the right ways.

Everyone in the city knows who I am: Vincent Citrione, top capo of the most powerful crime family in the city. If you’ve got two brain cells to rub together, you’re scared sh*tless of me.

If you’re a beautiful woman, I may have given you the hardest, dirtiest f*ck of your life before showing you the door.

Commitments? F*ck ‘em.

At least, that was my motto until I caught her snooping in the wrong place at the wrong time. I wanted her to be like all the rest. I wanted to forget her.

But she’s not like the others.

She thinks she can say no to me and get away with it. She thinks she can walk away after what she’s seen. But one taste and I know she’s going to be mine. I don’t care what it takes. Even if I have to kill to keep her safe.

I get what I want. And I want her.

USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon Charts Bestselling author Penelope Bloom is taking her first flight into romantasy—and yes, there are dragons. After years of contemporary romance, she's temporarily trading meet-cutes for magical academies and coffee shops for castles that reek of blood. She promises the banter is just as sharp, but now it comes with deadly consequences.

Fun fact: “Penelope Bloom” started as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the family dog, Penelope—never meant to be anything serious. But then the books took off, and the name stuck. Behind the scenes, Penelope Bloom is actually a husband-and-wife team. He handles the writing; she edits, helps with brainstorming, and runs the reader-facing side of things (like social media and messages). So if you’ve chatted with “Penelope” online, you’ve likely been talking to her—with the author chiming in whenever needed. Together, they’ve built the voice readers know and love.

I didn't know anything about this book when I started, I'd read another book with the offer of an extended epilogue if I signed onto the mailing list it also came with the option of a ARC for 'His' and one look at the cover and I thought "why not" and so I started reading.
I quickly settled in and soon found myself enjoying this book.
Vincent Citrione is one day going to be in control of the family even though he has an older brother Frankie, Frankie is muscle and doesn't possess the intelligence to control things so when his father steps down the good money is on Vince stepping up.
There was a third brother Jackie but he was murdered.
Aubriella Lightner is a sports girl, it's not her ideal job but she desperately needs the money. She's working a job she doesn't like, living in a crumby apartment and struggling to get by and it's been like this for so long because her father is a worthless drunk.
"I was working while my friends went to homecoming and prom and while everyone was having fun at the school football games and going out for drinks after class in college. I was working because I had to support myself and you.”
What she wants to be is an investigative journalist and this is what leads her into trouble as she follows her nose.
Aubriella sees and hears something she shouldn't and it brings her to Vince's attention and once there neither one can pull away. Even though they both know the attraction is dangerous they can't help it.
For the most part I enjoyed this book and it had the potential to be a 4* read but a couple of things let it down.
Firstly Aubriella has a huge TSTL moment plus a couple of smaller ones as well and I hate that plus the self sacrificing was a bit much, I know it's hard to say no to a parent but she's not helping anyone by just throwing money at the problem.
Also some parts seemed rushed and jumpy with gaps and unanswered questions so while this had potential and I did enjoy it for the most part for my anyway it's needs some work but if this is the author's first book then it's a great first book and yes I am a picky reader.

The stupid moment is obvious Aubriella's is nearly raped and then killed Vince gets her to safety and tells her to stay there because obviously it's not safe so what does she do? She goes home where they're (surprise, surprise) waiting for her with chloroform and yes she's kidnapped.
I had so many questions here's just a couple of them.
How did Jerry get her deleted article?
And what possessed him to publish and assume she'd give him the name?
Why would Frankie work with the people that killed Jackie? Or did I miss something?

I was given an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I cringed.
I hate this book with every beat of my heart. It’s a quick read and thank goodness it’s pretty short or else my hairline will recede. Ladies and Gentlemen, the worst book I’ve read so far this year. I can’t with the insta-lust. Mafia wise — this is weak. The hero acts like he’s some dangerous guy but here I am laughing my ass off. There are better mafia romances than this one. The heroine is so bland and naive.

I’M DONE WITH THIS. I deleted the succeeding books on scribd. Not gonna waste my time. Bye felicias!

I can't understand how this book has so many glowing, 5* reviews...
I got as far as 89%, even though I wanted to dnf quite a few times before that, but i didn't because it was really short and I thought, what the hell, let's finish it-but then I just got fed up minutes before finishing.
Side rant: Has anyone else noticed how whenever the heroine is an investigative journalist or a wannabe investigative journalist, she is also majorly TSTL and will almost surely eventually give up her 'dreams' for the hero? not sure if it happens in this book in the last 10%, but I would guess so based on what I've seen so far, considering the hero offered her the carefree life of a rich man's doll and she absolutely looooved the benefits of being with a wealthy man. She definitely is TSTL though, there's no question about that.
Anyway, the book is about a wannabe investigative journalist who is currently working as a sports reporter who overhears the hero talking to some football player about his loans and debts, losing the game on purpose bla bla. He's clearly a bad guy, in the mafia, he sees her, he asks everyone out of the room, promptly proceeds to fuck her and there we go, our story is starting.
From there, it's just a clusterfuck. Some sex, a whole lot of danger and killing, the obligatory misogyny and sexism of a romance novel and of course, plenty of proof of the heroine's stupidity and some costly shopping sprees thrown in.
I think that this would have been better if the author focused less time on the killing and the danger, because as it was, I didn't believe in the romance for one second. She was badly beaten up, saw the hero kill people and for a big part of the book was numb and has normal thoughts like "being with him would not be a fun existence". That is if he doesn't leave her as soon as he gets bored, because as far as she knows, that's what it looks like. But then, she has the classic epiphany, "at least with him i feel alive". ugh.
Another reason why I think the author should have focused more on the relationship side of things is because the rest is just awful. And makes no sense:
Another thing I didn't enjoy is that I kind of thought that the biggest reason behind her wanting to be with him (except for his good looks, of course) is that he has a lot of money and doesn't mind spending it on expensive clothes for her. She absolutely loved this and to me she felt very much like a gold digger, and not even the kind that owns it, which I can respect more.

Average read.
It had some parts which worked for me, some which did not. This book of insta-sex between Aubriella and Vincent was.. different. I mean I didn't like the way their "relationship" started, but it progresses differently and had some good sex scenes. Overall enjoyed it in parts.
Safe read

*sigh*

The beginning was promising. I actually said out loud... at work... "Oh this is going to be good".

It was not. it wasn't for me. I stopped at 50% in. I may try to finish it later.

Tortuous

Ms. Bloom failed to develop a likable heroine, Aubriella. I cannot sympathize with a character whining about her choice to be an enabler to her emotional abuse alcoholic father who blatantly shows no interest in her other than using her as an ATM at the expense of her barely meeting her own needs. In fact, she repeatedly makes seemingly ridiculous choices: telling her friend that her mobster lover probably harmed her friend's boyfriend. I found her tiring. She spit in her mobster boyfriend's face after he saved her life. She had indignation and defiance for her boyfriend but not her father.

This author fails to develop imaginative ploys. I knew who betrayed the family and why before the author revealed the issued. I also knew the safe house was compromised when it was pronounced a safe house. Really the mobster tells his girlfriend to snitch to the media.

I definitely have placed this author on my pass list.

Aubriella Lightner is not where she wants to be this point in her career, but with a father whose bills are bleeding her dry, she has no choice. As a sideline reporter for football season, she does the best she can to showcase her talent, but her true passion is investigative reporting and she stumbles on a story only to have one of the most intense moments with mafia bad boy Vincent Citrione.

Vincent can have any woman he wants, they all bow down to his needs and most are boring. When he meets Aubriella she stands up to him and he can't stop thinking about her. Vincent though has to tamp down his feelings while figuring out if Aubriella is a threat or not.

I liked aspects of this but didn't really like how Vincent treated Aubriella. I think the story almost tried to be too many things. Had some excellent moments would be interested in seeing what else this author writes.

Great story
Vincent is the underdog, he hurts people who don't pay and kills those who mess with his family. On a regular work day for him he pays a visit to a sports athlete who happens to owe a large some of money. While discussing how he will play crappy, Aubriella listens to what is going on curiosity in her journalism side took the best of her and she followed to see what was going out only when she listen she overheard things she shouldn't now Vincent will see what he will do this beautiful girl. After their first encounter she knows she should stay away but Vincent has other plans like owning her not only because of what she could do with the information but owning her body. Aubriella fears what he could do but he is the only one who has made her feel something, so she tries to stay away but he has a way of showing up everywhere. With a possible chance of war with another family he wants to protect her, but he wants to find out who killed his younger brother and will seek revenge.
This was filled with hot moments, betrayal, and between all the killing a relationship was built.

How did this book get these good ratings?

## unbelievably bad. I can't even believe this was published. This heroine was weak and stupid and this hero a huge disappointment. Omg, how the hell did this book get all these great reviews? Did we even read the same book? They didn't get to know each other at all. No conversations about anything. Basically just him telling her how it's going to be. No character development. Even the sex was mediocre. I don't mind control in the bedroom. In fact it can be sexy as hell if done with consent and trust. But hitting a woman in the face ? No. Just no. And the choking til she is losing consciousness? This is in no way sexy. I cannot recommend this book.

Simply drivel.

This was an ok read for me. I did not find myself fully invested in the characters or story and I missed the connection between H/h. Overall, it didn’t work for me as well as I had hoped.

I'm super confused by this ending. audio info below.
So, Aubriella (sports reporter, weak & whiny wanker) finds Vincent (crime boss-ish? not sure of his exact title) threatening an athlete that owes him money. They have some hot, dirty, locker room sex. He wants to keep seeing her, she can't make up her freaking mind.
Ok first, and this isn't much of a surprise, Aubriella was a crappy FMC. Her deadbeat alcoholic father uses her for her money and she keeps handing it over, despite the fact that she's struggling herself. As someone who has an identical parent - I don't have sympathy for Aub. Get your backbone!!! Then, she's got this stupid bff that betrays her trust and judges her for her boyfriend. If you confide something in your friend and tell them not to say anything - they shouldn't say anything. The fact you brush it off is stupid!!
Then, she gets all mad at Vince when her life is in danger and she blames him. Girl - if you hadn't been tracking him down to see what he was doing and then blasted your way into his mafia shakedown - YOU WOULDN'T BE IN DANGER. It was 10000% your fault.
So then the ending - it was just like over. He was fighting some family, which wasn't exactly clear why and then he rescued her and then I guess she decided to just be happy with him? It just kind of ended and they were together and having kids. I was like WTF how did that happen?!
audio Her audio was ok. His sucked. His voice was annoying, but when he tried to do the female character voice it made you violent. It was terrible.

The couple: Vincent and Aubriella

Romance genre: mafia
Series: Citrione Crime Family
Length: 155 pages

Plot: Aubriella is a reporter, currently reporting on sports. While at the stadium, she overhears a conversation that implies one of the star players is involved with the mafia. The head of the mafia, Vincent, catches her listening, and while his first response is to kill her, his second response, following very closely, is to keep her. Aubriella, while responsive to him, is not keen on a relationship. She has too much going on in her life - her job and her deadbeat father who demands that she support him. In the meantime, Vincent would like to keep Aubriella safe and tethered to him, in whatever way he can. He also has situations within the mafia - someone trying to make a play for power as well as the mystery of who killed his younger brother.

Character development: Best part of this book? The heroine's name. I like it.
Otherwise, it was a pretty standard mafia story.

Next book in the series: Mine

2.5***** Still Head-scratching....

So Vincent Citrione was who he was thru the whole book.
He was about to become the head of the Citrione Family, capo, killer, torturer, manwhore, and an alpha jerk. There was no doubt in this readers mind that he was not quitting his obligations to his family for any reason. He wanted revenge for the death of his brother and also had to deal with an inside threat. Aubrielle seemed to be a chink in his armour.

Now Aubrielle, sigh...

She is a sports girl but wants to be an investigative journalist. She is not happy with the path her life has taken. She deals with an alcoholic father who she basically has had to support for a long time.
While at work one day she overhears Vincent as he threatens one of the football players who owes him money. His first thought is to kill her, but no wait. (TSTL Aubrielle moment) He orders her to strip and she does, he proceeds to screw her up against a wall, no preliminaries, and yep, you guessed it, NO protection. He then threatens her to keep her mouth quiet and he will see her again.

The one thing that is constant in this story is that Vincent wants to have sex with Aubrielle and Aubrielle wants to have sex with Vincent. He is overjoyed that she enjoys his darker needs. He has her watched and followed. He shows up at places she is at and thru all this she can't be with him because he is a mobster, but has sex with him anyway he wants every single time.

Besides Aubrielle being agreeable to the way Vincent dominates her in and out of the bedroom, I am not really sure what he found so great in her, but he was obsessed with her and the situation with his dead brother got put on a back burner while he took care of the people that were out to hurt her.

I am also not sure how she was able to put together an article about the other crime family while at a safehouse. But this is fiction after all, so I will go with it. Vincent and Aubrielle get their HEA.

So this was just okay for me. I do own the next book. Go figure.....

Vincent "Vince" Citrione is top capo in his family next to his father. Vince isn't someone you should mess with period. He's a fuck'em and leave'em type of guy for him commitments mean nothing to him until her. Aubriella Lightner is a sports journalist that wants to break into investigative journalism to sate her curiosity. Aubriella curiosity is her undoing when she witnesses something that she shouldn't have. Now Aubriella's life and world are turned upside down. Aubriella can't deny what Vince does to her body leaves her begging for more even though she shouldn't. Who wants to harm Aubriella? What is it about Aubriella for Vince? Your answers await you in His.

This new to me author really hit this one out of the park. The characters and story were raw, gritty, complex, compelling, real, naughty, honest, hungry, and fascinating too. I'm definitely up for more from this author and series.

So good to owned!

I was taken in from the beginning. Vince is sinfully sexy and the epitome of alpha male. Aubriella is curious as a cat and we know how that ended. Their first meeting was explosive and hot as hell. As the story progresses it is amazing how their relationship grows and hard to read the sadness and betrayal. Aubriella is a strong woman that can take Vince's darkness and that ties her to him irrevocably. I liked this book and would recommend.

I'm extremely surprised at all the good reviews this book got. I don't feel like we got to witness enough of the relationship buildup to make me invested in the couple because it was built around sex only. I have read many Mafia novel and this one doesn't fit that genre.

Mafia romance

Who doesn't love a good mafia romance? Aubriella is a sports reporter who's always looking for a good story that could help her career. But what happens when she goes snooping around at work and runs right into a mafia man (Vincent) and hears too much. Vincent can't just let her go and there's something about her that won't let him walk away. I absolutely loved their story and the action that happened, it definitely kept my attention. I also loved the epilogue. I never like to be left guessing where their lives ended up unless there is another book so the end was lovely!
