On a cold night in November 1865, Michel Llewellyn informs his only daughter, Priscilla, that she is betrothed to Josiah Pennyman, a man she has never met. Six months later, she boards the Emma, a merchant ship, to travel from Boston to the Pennyman ranch outside Corpus Christi, Texas. Denied the company of her lady’s maid, Priscilla embarks on the journey alone. Faced with superstitious seamen, the treacherous coral reefs of the Florida Keys, and her own doubts, she resolves to honor her father’s wishes. But, when Josiah Pennyman reveals his true nature, she hopes only to escape this man, and Texas, with her life.
A native Californian, Judith Bixby Boling has been writing short stories and essays since elementary school. She utilized her research and writing skills while employed as a paralegal and construction specifier.
Boling and her husband share a love of American history, which led them to become Civil War reenactors and living historians. While she is usually seen depicting a Northern woman, on occasion you may find her on the battlefield portraying a woman disguised as a Union cannoneer.
Her debut novel, Priscilla Alone, was published in October 2016. Book Two in the Priscilla Saga, Together Alone, was published in October 2018.
I saw this novel, by Judith Bixby Boling, on Twitter and thought it looked interesting. I was not disappointed. The story about Priscilla's hardships and dilemmas held my interest from the beginning. Through Ms. Boling's writing, enhanced by the first-person narrative and authentic dialogue, I felt that I was right there beside the young woman through the end of this story. Besides finding a well-told story in Priscilla Alone, I found a novel that was extensively researched. I could sense the heat and wild ways of the land west of Corpus Christi. My only disappointment was that Ian McClain did not appear again ... but a sequel would be nice for Priscilla's journey is not over.
I read the first page of the book as soon as it arrived and I was drawn into a different world...a world described beautifully by Judith, the author, and with a sense of poetic rhythm which continued throughout the entire story. Judith painted a world very different to our own and the main character evolved fully and had me rooting for her right up until the very end. The female characters in particular showed how a united front can win even in the most difficult of circumstances. I particularly enjoyed the historical backdrop and all the language and description this brought with it to the page. Highly recommended. Thank you Judith for a wonderful read.
Those who love a great read and historical fiction will not be disappointed. The research and authenticity was top notch. The story of Priscilla was well written and prime for a sequel. Great news! The sequel just came out and I can't wait to read it! "Together Alone."
