I think this is a good guide to the practical side of directing a film. It tells you what the functions of a director is and what tasks they're supposed to accomplish through every step of the creative process from pre-production to post-production. It's a little repetitive, but I believe it's a good guide for beginners who want to know the basics of directing their first film. He also recommends some other books on directing that you can read.
