Madame Ruby, gypsy fortune teller in the city of Chicago, makes headlines in the Chicago Tribune when she predicts a Halloween murder in the old haunted house in Lincoln Park. She also lays down a challenge for Madeline Donovan to attend a séance on that night and thwart the murderer.
Madeline dismisses the challenge until she receives a note from the sisters who live there asking for her help to rid the house of a troublesome ghost who recently inhabited their home and is causing them much consternation.
The scene is then set for her and her friends to attend an elaborate Halloween gala that is nothing as she imagined and begins her journey to catch a ghost.

,,, A Smidgeon of Ghosts is the sixth book of the 'Madeline Donovan Mysteries' written by Madison Kent. I had really anticipated that I would enjoy this book, due to the topic. However, that was not the case. I just could not get into this book.

Although this was a free book, I just could not complete it. There were so many erroneous mistakes, that included but were not limited to grammatical errors, inaccurate wording, misspellings, and ommissions.
I was disappointed and found myself unable to complete this book. Again I find myself in the minority. Different strokes for different folks it seems.

A Smidgeon of Ghosts (Madeline Donovan Mysteries Book 6) . . . Kindle Edition by Madison Kent (Author) Print Length: 326 pages Published October 1, 2016
The only reason for the four stars was the lack of proofreading or editing. Otherwise, this was a delightful, turn-of-the-century novel that combined the supernatural, a haunted house, seances, mediums, ghosts, and a possibly haunted basement and attic, beginning with a large gathering at the haunted house for a party and seance on Halloween night when a murder has been predicted.
The three sisters living in the haunted house were totally adorable, and I loved Madeline and her two male sidekicks. The author stays true in her description of clothing for the period, as well as interior home furnishings, and the workings of a normal two-person home, as she describes Madeline and her father, the doctor, with their housekeeper/cook, Mrs. O'Malley.
If you enjoy this time period and a series of mysteries throughout one novel, then this one is definitely a novel you would enjoy. Just ignore the transcription/editing errors, and you'll be set with a lovely novel!
I've come to the conclusion that these are first drafts, and that no one bothers to proof read or edit them. Be warned that there are extra words, missing words, run on sentences, and non-sentences. There are also words used incorrectly -- you don't actually try to detract someone, you actually try to distract them, but the author hasn't figured that out in six books, so I doubt that she ever will.
The stories are entertaining but inconsistent. Madeline is pleased with her progress in controlling her addictions in one book only to revert to dependency in the next, with no reference to suggest that it is backsliding. Oh well.
Interesting story lines that could be so much better with a little polishing - but I guess I got what I paid for -- a Kindle freebie.
I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.
Each Madeline Donovan mystery gets better and better. This one was a little bit fun too. I do recommend reading the series in order for the best experience. With each mystery things are explained in the past & the relationship between Madeline & her friends grow. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters in this book. I give 4 stars due to some editing problems that interfere with the flow of my reading. This is my one complaint.
Though the plot is interesting, the characters are not well defined, meaning, not just the ones the reader might follow through on the inner story sequence but the characters on this book in particular, they were many but shallow. There are huge gaps on the time-line, things the author presents to the reader forgetting the reader might know of History, continuous errors as Cook or Father are just a little example, their many to correct on a proper edition... and hey a bit of research... please.
I chose five 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟's because the story was mysterious, fun, charming and kept me reading tell I found the answer everyone was looking for! Loved the characters and their antics. One of the most fun mysteries I have read in a while. Thanks for the adventures you provided for me. I all your talent as a writer very much. Looking forward to reading more by you
Read a Madison Kent novel before, but I am most happy I did! I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a clean, light mystery. That doesn't overwhelm you, with all the gruesome details, of the murder. I would also like to thank Madison, for having her books in Kindle Unlimited. I read approximately two books a day. I couldn't afford my "addiction" it it weren't for authors like her. Thank you so much!
I could never write myself, so I am hesitant to criticize someone who does. However, I didn't finish this book because I was having a hard time figuring out who was speaking. Dialogue for one person was broken up into several paragraphs which might be grammatical, but I lost track of who was talking. It also had sentences that needed to be revised because it had extra words. Sorry to be critical.
If you enjoy a mystery that lets you meet a gypsy, attend a seance, and find the heroine involved in a murder mystery, then this book is for you Madeline is challenged to find the ghosts who are supposedly haunting the house of three elderly sisters, but it doesn't end there. In fact, it's only the beginning of a mystery that will keep y0u on the edge of your seat.
Had such fun reading this book. I have not read other books about Madeline, but I really like her. She's a level headed, fisty, strong female character. I Wonder if she will end up with Hugh or Jonathan, but their friendship is enviable. I will check out other books in this series. I bet she'll find more trouble to get into.
Very entertaining. The plot thickens as more people are considered the murderer. Who will be the next victim?
Easy reading and fun mystery. I'm taken with her father same housekeeper who always waited for Madeline. And now I have to get another of the books too see if anything develops in the romance area.
This is the first book that I have read from this series and now I want to read the rest of them! Excellent plot with twists and turns, told from the perspective of a lady detective in the late 19th/ early 20th century, and told well! I definitely recommend this to mystery lovers and historical novel lovers as well
As with all of Miss Kent’s mysteries there is an element of romance, mystery and always murder. This one however had a touch of the supernatural as well. It was a fun read that left you wondering until the end,
I am fast becoming a big fan of Ms. Kent's work! She produces wonderful entertaining tales with totally wonderful characters without the sex, Gore and bloody violence so many authors use to make up for lack of a Good story line.
This series is set in 1890s Chicago and has many atmospheric period details. This volume was set around Halloween and captured the beauty of Chicago in the fall. The heroine is a widow who sought to find a new interest in life by solving crimes. Relaxing reading.
Seriously an editor was needed. Sentence structure was so bad, I had to read sentences multiple times to understand. It is apparent that the author loves to use the comma but to the point it is difficult to read.
