Per questa novella, composta per la rivista "Science Fiction Age" nel 1996 e candidata sia al premio Hugo che al Nebula, Robert Silverberg dice di essersi ispirato alla storia del grande architetto Dedalo, personaggio della mitologia greca che, secondo la leggenda, avrebbe progettato il labirinto del re cretese Minosse, dove avrebbe risieduto il Minotauro. Silverberg riprende dunque la leggenda greca e, mantenendo quel tono tra il poetico e lirico che aveva usato molti anni addietro nel suo grande capolavoro "Ali della notte", ribalta completamente la vicenda. Con la grande maestria che ha raggiunto nella piena maturità stilistica e creativa, l'autore di tanti capolavori della fantascienza moderna ci regala la storia affascinante di un uomo prigioniero di una razza barbara e della venuta di una cometa in un mondo ancora soggiogato dalle paure di antiche e minacciose divinità, un mondo dai contorni vivaci e dai molti pericoli, redento dalla figura incredibile del grande ingegnere Kell, genio dai molteplici interessi, il cui destino sarà inesorabilmente legato a quello dell'Alieno rinchiuso nell'incredibile labirinto che lui stesso ha creato.
Robert Silverberg è unanimemente riconosciuto come uno dei massimi autori della fantascienza contemporanea. Nato a Brooklyn (New York) il 15 gennaio del 1935, iniziò a scrivere SF d'avventura negli anni '50, diventando ben presto uno degli autori più famosi e prolifici e ottenendo il premio Hugo come autore più promettente del 1956. Durante la metà degli anni sessanta però, spinto dal desiderio di dimostrare a se stesso e agli altri le sue capacità di vero scrittore, e di essere in grado di realizzare anche opere di qualità, Silverberg impresse una svolta decisiva allo stile dei suoi romanzi, iniziando a produrre opere di maggiore impegno umano e letterario. Tra gli scritti più importanti di questo secondo periodo ricordiamo "Ali della notte" (con cui vinse anche un premio Hugo), "Brivido crudele", "Torre di cristallo", forse la sua opera più completa e riuscita, "Vertice di immortali", "Paradosso dei passato" e "Mutazione", che si inserisce in quel gruppo di romanzi dedicati da Silverberg alla descrizione e all'esplorazione dell'esperienza mistica della trascendenza.

Robert Silverberg is a highly celebrated American science fiction author and editor known for his prolific output and literary range.
