Every Christian can have a close walk with the Lord. Praising Him each morning, trusting Him each day, talking with Him every evening - these are some ways to accomplish this goal. Matthew Henry shows how you can obtain God's bountiful blessings through a life of secret communion with Him.
Matthew Henry was an English non-conformist clergyman. Henry's well-known Exposition of the Old and New Testaments (1708–1710) is a commentary of a practical and devotional rather than of a critical kind, covering the whole of the Old Testament, and the Gospels and Acts in the New Testament.
This little book contains some real gems. The first several chapters are a little dry and repetitive, especially for those who are not new Christians, but the last few chapters are a gold mine.
Loved most of the book! The last chapters felt disjointed.
Praying is lifting up the soul to God and pouring out the heart before Him. 11
What a shame it is to us that God is more willing to be prayed to, and more ready to hear prayer, than we are to pray! 13
Desire is love in motion, like a bird upon his wing; delight is love at rest, like a bird upon the nest… our delight must be so in God that we never wish for more than God. 68
Every member of the family sharing in family mercies must wait on God for grace to contribute to family duties. Whatever disa-greeableness there may be in any family rela-tionship, instead of having the spirit either burdened with it or provoked by it, let it be an inducement to wait on God, who is able either to remedy the grievance, or to balance it and give grace to bear it. 98
We are never less alone than when we are alone with God. 107
Do not dare to go to sleep in that condition in which you do not dare to die. 150
It ought to be the business of every day to prepare for our last day. 173
Our time is not our own, for we know in whose hands our times are, and we must always live for Him, by whom we always live. 176
I tried this a few years back. It was a little difficult to read. I just crushed it this year. My heart was ready to devour it. My father loves Matthew Henry. I.purchased the book because of my dad's adoration for Henry. It's a wonderful practical Christian life
