After travelling for years, Dhinal hopes he is close to discovering how to save his people. Along the way, he has collected a ragtag band of misfits, all of whom harbour secrets of their own. The latest member of his group, Strings, is running from something, her dreams haunted by flames and terror. Together, they arrive in the bustling city of Eastsea, seeking a guide to the legendary Amethyst Mountains.

Kees is tired of the city. She longs to seek solitude in wild places, far away from the noise and stench of others.

Both Kees and Dhinal know the wilderness does not care about you, it simply exists. Whether you live, or whether you die, is up to you, to your companions and to sheer chance. Winter is whispering in the high places, dangers-unknown abound in the forests, and fractures begin to appear in the group itself.

The truth, Dhinal knows, is that there are many ways to die, but only one death. Yet this journey will test them all, in ways they could not possibly imagine.

I was born in 1977, one of the micro-generation of people who experienced an analogue childhood and digital adulthood. Sometimes called Xennials, sometimes ‘The Star Wars Generation’, this duality had a definite impact on how I see the world.

I am Scottish. Technically, I was born in England, in a now dead and disappeared county, but my family moved to the far northern islands of Orkney when I was eight and I grew up there. Scotland remains the closest thing I have to a home nation.

I write for a sort-of-living and travel and live in places where the small amount of money I make from my words goes further. This feeds into my work, new experiences and cultures adding extra flavour and detail. Rather than the oft-derided “Digital Nomad” tag, I prefer the more Snufkinesque “Globally Feral”. It fits. I am not a travel writer, but a writer who travels.

“Only One Death” is an engaging novel, which is quite dark in places, but creates a sense of urgency for the reader to read on…you need to find out what’s going to happen next!! As a result, this is a very difficult book to put down!

It is a fantasy novel and some of the names can be a bit tricky, especially as it is about a group of 10 people. Three characters, in particular, are very well developed. As it is a novella, it is quite short, but you feel like you really know some of the characters by the end.

The book is written by someone who knows how to survive in the wilderness, and this comes across in the writing. The wilds play an important role in the story, and is clearly important to the author. The reader is left pondering on a time when more of Britain was engulfed in wilderness, rather than the towns and settlements we know today.

I would certainly recommend this book to any lover of fantasy stories.

Great fantasy quest! Well built story, where you get quickly attached to characters, but should you?! The author takes us on an adventure full of twists in its own world (check out the maps with the link provided). Includes very strong female lead characters evolving in a fantasy world where diversity is not stigmatized. Definitely interesting!

It only loses a star because I wanted to carry on reading it for longer and was disappointed when it ended so soon, and I don't even 'do' this sort of book usually. And I don't normally write reviews, either. Go me.

A curious little tale with a mainly female cast that keeps the reader guessing right to the end.
