I liked it. In some cases I think it focuses on certain breeds too much. For those new to dogs, it's good for them to know that each dog was bred for a specific purpose.
I own a very loyal but bossy corgi.

I am about to adopt a rescue dog, the first dog that will be occupying my household since I was a kid almost fifty years ago. And boy, have things changed! Back then, you fed your dog and threw it outside when it needed to relieve itself. There was a lot of smacking and yelling "Bad dog!" when the dog did something wrong. Trips to the vet were for shots and dire emergencies. And almost no one had their dog spayed or neutered.

It's a new world of dog ownership now. I think much of it is that we have come to understand dogs better. And to understand that new world, the Total Dog Manual is an excellent book. It is very comprehensive, handling topics from training to feeding to grooming to exercising with your dog to (believe it or not) dressing it up for Halloween. All the topics are dealt with in conservational, short and easily digestible chunks. And the book is laid out well, with the text balanced with white space and pictures.

My new animal companion will soon be arriving and this book helps me feel prepared. I would highly recommend it to anyone considering becoming a dog owner. Current dog owners may find much to draw from it too.
