Contemporary parents have been sold a bill of goods on quality time. They've come to believe that children require constant attention. In his Six-Point Plan for Raising Happy, Healthy Children , psychologist John Rosemond, a columnist for Knight-Ridder and Better Homes and Gardens and author of Parent Power! , reveals that being a good parent is really about helping children get out of our lives! As a husband, father, and therapist, Rosemond knows that parents can't give their children what they don't have. They need an abundant supply of self-esteem and happiness in order to share it. Rosemond offers an easy-to-follow plan that will start parents and children on the road to living lives of their own: Put your marriage first. Expect your children to obey. Establish responsibility by assigning chores. Don't be afraid to tell your children "no". Eliminate unnecessary toys. Encourage creativity by minimizing TV viewing. John Rosemond's plan will begin a lifelong process of freeing parents from the guilt, exhaustion, and anger undermining today's family and free children to lead happy, responsible lives of their own.
Quick read (listen). Not your “traditional” in today’s standards raising children book. Rosmond reaches back to the days before rampantly available TV and media. I read the 1985 version, however he does have a more current revised version. I like his approach - simple and common sense. No earth shattering approaches were shared with me during this book...I feel like my parents were onboard with his take on raising kids. Audiobook is read by him - he sounds like he’s lecturing - which I thought was fine. I’d recommend if you’re at the end of your rope and have chaos at home. This would help save your sanity.
Immediately after I finished the book, I restarted it with my husband. Already after just one chapter, we’ve started to implement somethings he mentions and I’ve changed my viewpoint on a few things. Very simple yet helpful.
