The title is a grille, the grating a nun speaks through to a visitor. It lets speech across and holds the speaker back, both at once.
Thirty-three poems in five groups, then “Estrechamiento” standing alone at the end.
“Tenebrae” turns prayer around. We are near, Lord, near and able to be grasped. Then the poem tells God to pray to us. It takes the shape of a Holy Week service and hands it back empty.
“Estrechamiento” walks you onto the ground and leaves you there. Taken into the terrain with the trace that cannot be denied. Grass, written asunder. No place is named. The place where they lay has a name and has none.
This is “Fuga de muerte” gone over again with the music taken out. The earlier poem had become the one everybody quoted. This book makes quoting harder, and that is the point of it.

Have a ton of respect for David Young, but docking a star for the inaccurate, overly-interpretative translation of the title, and the way he veers at times from the poems' cadence and direction, as if he's concerned more with differing from the work of other translators (see "Tenebrae" or, again, the title itself). Often, though, these translations hit home and capture the sound of Celan.
