I am a shameless fan of Karen Mangia and while I have always admired her work ethic I had no idea of the high personal toll it was taking on her. We can all learn from this book and while I am at a different place in my life, I will use this book to make me a better mentor. Great tools and tips!

Like other books of this type, the author opens with the personal crisis which precipitated her revelation. Unlike those other books, Mangia offers pragmatic steps to experience the same turnaround she did. The book’s title may be misleading as it doesn’t deem success via corner offices and sales awards. Instead, it’s a helpful standard of procedures for honoring your self through self care in your career, relationships and physical/mental health.

Success = Self Care

“Do you ever struggle to describe your long-term career goals?… I was putting an immense amount of pressure on myself to choose a specific job or a specific job title. That felt too narrow- too confining. It’s the career equivalent of trying to find The One while dating.

I discovered it was much easier to describe what I wanted to learn next. I asked other people to help me match what I wanted to learn next with specific jobs and job titles.”

See the difference?

I really appreciated the chapter advising to set calendar appointments for self care. Have I heard this before? Yes. But I hadn’t heard it compared to entrepreneurship where you’re instructed to pay yourself first. This resonated for me and now I get it. Scheduling my self care us paying myself first and the only way my personal success is sustainable.

Recommend for midcareer professionals or those on the edge of burnout seeking a new direction with the steps spelled out in a fresh way.
