In A Good Case, Cynthia W. Hammer weaves a powerful tale of several families who have senior relatives in need of care. After being in the caregiving business for over ten years, Sheila Price is married and a compassionate caregiver who has difficulty in the highs and lows of life. Feeling the loss of clients along the way, she courageously journey’s through Philadelphia into Los Angeles, seeking work in her field. As the caregiver and seniors’ lives intertwine, Sheila discovers an exchange of wrong attitudes and words can cost you your career. The only saving grace is her coworker named Gladys Crenshaw. The two share a warm friendship out of a desperate need to be understood while hustling as caregivers in the workforce.
In this book, Hammer shines a spotlight on the horrors of the in-home medical care industry. The abuse, death, corruption in addition to the already challenging job duties, hours and wages the caregivers have to deal with as portrayed in this book, have given me a whole new perspective and appreciation for those who choose this as a profession.
My reasoning for the below average rating is that I don't believe the novel was edited. There are spelling mistakes, punctuation issues, and formatting issues throughout. There are entire chapters that I believe could be cut as well with little to no impact. Also, there is no real overarching plot and more a collection of stories with a few central characters. Also, some parts are very odd or unbelievable like the demon masks and the Bassett Hound that travels twenty miles without getting lost.
These negatives above didn't cause me to DNF this book, but I am disappointed because I believe the message of the book could have been stronger with more attention to detail and a clearer vision for the plot.
If you have an interest in the at home heath industry I would definitely recommend "A Good Case."

Riveting page turner, about the billion dollar home health industry in senior care. This novel truly uncovers the pandering of seniors finances as they age. Very informative, heartfelt, humorous. You will laugh at ordinary everyday experiences and come out with the ability to think clear with loved ones concerns. The author writes about the two caregivers working in Los Angeles as perhaps it's someone that we have meant.
