Even Negan's awesomeness couldn't quite drum up the usual amount excitement for me in this volume...
description
Which is odd because I normally love this title no matter how little action is happening on the pages, but this time around I just...eh.
I don't know. It seemed (to me) that with a cast of characters this huge something got lost this time around. Instead of focusing on one or two plot threads, Kirkman kept hopping back and forth between random characters that I didn't even know to give me snippets of conversations that I didn't care one way or the other about.
Who the fuck are these guys?!

description

Just kidding. I know they're from that weird Kingdom place where they dress up like extras from Medival Times. But seriously? 10,000 of these little nobody I give a shit about panels really worked my nerves by the end of the book.
Anyway.

description

The group is now looking at a full-scale attack from the Whisperers, thanks to Negan. But with all the survivors spread out in the different communities, and all the infighting and backstabbing, banding together to fight the horde isn't as easy as it first looks. <--and it doesn't actually look easy at first!

description

The gist of this volume is that these guys have to not only fight zombies but each other.
And, let's be honest, that's the plot of every one of these volumes so far.
If you're fine with that (and most days I am) then I think you'll love this installment. But if you were hoping for something different from Volume 27...?

description

It's not bad, but I wish Kirkman would just stick to one (or three!) plotlines at a time.

Jeez, how many more people out there? Just sayin'. Whisperer War. A war more deadly than a Wispa bar war, have no doubt!

Another war across the communities? I like the way that Kirkman and co. have once again really thought things through and show serious growth and development in how the communities wage war, with all the experience they've had. Worth reading just for the ongoing sub-arc of Negan fighting for the good guys! He just gets funnier. Edge of the seat stuff by this amazing team, yet another 9.5 out of 12. Almost a Five Star read!

Loved this latest TWD volume. Neegan's character has evolved in a fascinating way. The war with the Whisperers was excellent and yet we have an extraordinary cliffhanger for Vol 28. I think the comic book is far better than the TV show at this point - I dropped the latter after last season. And the artwork continues to be great too. Can't wait for 28!

Don't read this if you are afraid of spoilers! I don't really have anything marked in this one!

A pretty awesome entry into The Walking Dead series. Lots of action and story progression - it felt a lot longer than some of the previous volumes.

I don't want to say to much for fear of spoiling things, but the cover is pretty spoiler-ific even without my help. Because the TV show has reached the Negan storyline, he is now a pop culture icon. As you can see, he is here in all his glory!

The battle with the Whisperers is brutal - don't want to read this to find out what part Negan plays?

It’s Rick’s crew vs The Whisperers, the nutters who wear zombie skin and live among the zombie herds! Rick’s guys have guns, swords, horses, and walled communities; The Whisperers have bows and arrows, knives, zombies and live in the woods. Yeah, I loves me a good one-sided fight, really puts you on the edge of your seat, that’s why the Ronda Rousey/Amanda Nunes fight was the best ever! Damn, already broke my resolution to be less sarcastic this year...

Guess who wins? Yup! The Whisperer War is barely a couple of battles, let alone a “war”, and a boring volume to boot! Sure, Rick’s side loses a few peeps (nobody anyone will miss) but it never felt like they were in any trouble. I’m surprised they went out to fight hand-to-hand at all when they could’ve just dug in, sat on the wall and shot at the enemy with their rifles but I guess Robert Kirkman needed to manufacture “tension” somehow.

Repetitive fighting takes up most of the book with little else going on. Carl and Lydia have relationship problems - snooze. Not even Negan roaming free among Rick’s group - with weapons! - livens up the story much. I thought he might try some shenanigans but nope, even Negan’s dull in this one.

Charlie Adlard’s art is good, especially some of the splash pages showing the numbers of the dead the Whisperers have at their disposal. But I’m not a fan of this new approach of cramming the pages with 12 panels ostensibly to show in four panels at a time the various subplots Kirkman’s got going on. The pages look busy and none of the storylines really progress much anyway.

The previous conflicts were interesting in large part because the main antagonist was compelling and charismatic - The Governor, Negan - but this Beta guy is a dreary sap who doesn’t grab your attention.

The Whisperers turn out to be a very unexciting enemy to read about or see challenge Rick. Aside from a couple of scenes and the art, The Whisperer War was a flatline. Hopefully Kirkman’s got something better up his sleeve than continue to focus on this bunch because I really don’t want to see any more of these losers.

This volume was jam-packed with carnage and had an ending that promises even more. It's almost like Kirkman and co. are trying to please all the book's critics who have been saying nothing ever happens in TWD.

The only thing that currently bugs me about this book is the way the creators seem to be trying to make us like Negan. I don't mean make us think he's an awesome villain but rather make us think he's a great guy, or a kind of 'cool' anti-hero. Judging by some of the letters at the back of the book, it seems to be working on a lot of people too. Considering what Negan's done, and taken great delight in doing at that, I find this more than a little disturbing.

I thought this was a really good volume. I enjoyed how it had a good bit of action and drama in it and it definitely wasn't a buffer volume. It's also cool to see the characters I like kick some whisperer and zombie butt! I'm really excited to see what comes next as a few things are slowly brewing up in the story!

They also changed the artwork layout slightly. They changed it to a 16 panel grid for this arc and I recognised straight away that something was different when I started reading it. They wanted to pack more in to the issues which is cool but I'm not sure how much I like the change. I feel like because there's less space in some of the grids, there's less detail or I just notice less detail because the grids are smaller. If they keep it up, I'll just see how I feel about it in the future.

I would recommend this series and I can't wait to read more!

Let me start by saying that my almost-2-month old napped long enough for me to finish this in one sitting. The Reading Gods answered my prayers. I say thankya.

Next let me say that I got to enjoy a big bowl of loaded peanut butter cup ice cream while reading this.

Now, let me say what I will about this volume of the Walking Dead:

*clears throat*

HOLY POTATOES

THIS is what got me hooked on the Walking Dead to begin with. Great writing, action, adventure, romance, humor...OH! And zombies!! Lots and lots of brain-eating, rotting corpses.

The storyline is progressing and I have to say I really enjoyed this volume. I was beginning to wonder if maybe Kirkman was beating a dead horse...and he kind of is. But I think, based on the ending of this one, we are about to find out if Rick Grimes & Co. can really hang. Shit is getting real.

As for cliffhanger endings, it just wouldn't be TWD without one I guess... but luckily Kirkman stepped up the pace in this one to keep this reader thoroughly satisfied. So much so, I decided to write my FIRST review in months!

*Curtsies for applause*

There was one *minor* complaint here for me. I think that Kirkman is starting to allow the show to influence his comics a little too much. I won't spoil anything but if anyone cares to hear more on this I am open to discussion in PM forms. (MahFah, I'm looking at you!)

It has been a while since I had a volume of the Walking Dead keep me THAT excited and invested. So for that, you get all five shiny yellow stars, Kirkman. Keep it up.

A disappointing volume. The titular war was mostly inconsequential, nobody important died, and the whisperers are still around and not done with. And for such an inconsequential volume, it was extremely busy with sub-plots! This whole arc was drawn in various modifications of a 16-panel grid. As a result, we have a pretty tiring reading experience, and because Kirkman tried to juggle four or five sub-plots on every single page, that noticeably fucked up the pacing of the book. Sometimes it was really hard to understand what is even going on right now.
I do have to say though, Charlie Adlard's artwork started to look great ever since this series got an inker. Kudos to Stefano Gaudiano.

...and I'm done! I am finally caught up on TWD! That was a lot of misery to trudge through. But I'm not sorry I did that! The series definitely got much better in later volumes.

As you can see by the cover, old Negan is still around.

I tell you, with this character, the game of life and death just got kicked up a notch. For those that have not caught up with the comics/graphic novels; I advise that you do so. I love this character and you will not guess the story-line on this guy. I giggled a few times, and it was ssoooo inappropriate.

Anywho, the whisper war.... more like a battle if you ask me. The communities have no idea what they are up against. Rick knows, because he has seen it with his own eyes. The rest; they hem and they haw. They are lackluster and full of themselves, until it is too late. Nice cliff-hanger on this one.

Even though there's this big ongoing battle throughout the book with Dwight and Michonne fighting a horde of walkers, it's all a bit meh outside of a few shining moments. Even Negan is getting old. The amount of subplots in the book are very distracting as well. The entire book feels like a build up to future events more than a war with the Whisperers. I have to say the book did end well though.

this issue was jam packed with action, story progression, romance, humour and the walkers oh and trust me there are thousands of them in this one, which is kind of making me feel more nervous.

The whisperer war has officially began and both sides report huge loses during the early stages of the war. The whisperer's don't play around they got right into the war and they did some pretty crazy stuff which i have never seen before in the comic series, they were very well prepared. This issue sees the death of a long time character Father Gabriel but i did feel that his death scene was very quick and didn't get to see much from him.

There was one major character who made there final appearance in this issue and yes i'm talking about Lucille which was Negan's beloved baseball bat, who finally breaks during a fight scene between Negan and Beta. I am really starting to love Negan hes just funny and witty and he is really starting to impress me with the character development hes had since appearing in issue 100

The whisperer's attack the Hilltop community and man oh man was that crazy to see on the page, people dying all around, the whole place going up in flames.. it was one of my favourite scenes in this issue.

the ending of the issue was crazy, not hundreds but thousands of walkers are currently headed to Alexandria and i'm honestly not sure how they are going to get out of this one but i think everyone will have to come together for this one. i cannot wait for the next issue!

Another strong volume- it picks up with Negan bringing home his "trophy" to show Rick his intentions. Negan claims that Rick and the residents of Alexandria should trust him, as he has dealt a hard blow to the Whisperers, and willingly came back to face them. Beta discovers what Negan did and vows revenge. Rick tries to bring all his allies together to fight the horde of zombies that the Whisperers are hiding among, but not all the outposts are willing to send their members to join Alexandria's militia. The militia plans their strategy, but of course, things never go well out in the field. Negan's continued evolution is fascinating, with a few hints as to what Lucille represented to him. Beta hasn't seemed like a strong villain compared to the Governor, Negan or Alpha, but the references to his face never having been seen intrigues me. Is he someone we know from the past? One aside about the artwork- it was much too busy. There were several two page spreads that had too many panels that were hard to follow chronologically.

WHISPERERS WAR IS OVER
I hated those animals, they worth than Negan or the governor
Kirkman started this volume with a shocking death of a major character and ended it with a breathtaking scene xD
I love this volume but I hated it was easy to predict but still one more star for the end :)
I Belive in Rick grimes <3 but can't deny that Negan is amazing and makes the comics more interesting.

This was an all our war. As Alpha was killed Beta took it on himself to declare war and we see a group led by Dwight with Negan going there and trying to defeat the whisperers as much as they can and its pure action where they fight and its bloody and all, zombies dying, the whisperers too and Lucille and Negan reunite and they fight and its disgusting and beautiful at the same time lol. I love how Kirkman has so many things going on yet he focuses on these moments and they think they win until Hilltop is attacked and then Alexandria.

As the endgame is approaching the action has been ramped up, more and more people are dying and its sudden deaths and twists, the herd of zombies only increasing and the war for survival increasing and you get some great moments for Eugene and the other and the artist is going Bananas on this. Its just too good.

Negan really seems to enjoy wars. Now its The Whisperer War. Would be stupid if they would lose against them. I don't think the Whisperers are strong. They weren't even strong enough to show real emotions without feeling attacked.

Negan's reaction to the death of his wife was satisfying. I see my grudge becoming a bit less now. At least he lost something too. Just like I lost my favourite character by his hands.

The Whisperers contradict themselves so much. Allow wrongdoing by excusing it that everyone has to stand on their own feet, meaning that everyone only survives if they are strong enoug. Survival of the fittest strong presented here, making their group not civilised but animal-like. The contraction is that leaders like Alpha and Beta are asking for help (for instance, by standing up) but other members of their group aren't allowed to ask this.

I have this weird love-hate relationship with this title. It goes through periods I really love and periods I really hate.

After a few volumes of upswing, this first part of "Whisper War" left me really cold.

It took me a long time to figure out why, and I think I have it.. Zombies are the least intetesting part of this title. They have no motivatitions, and in the best zombie films/fiction they should serve only to illuminate truths about humans.

I prefer issues/arcs thst focus on characters. Seeing people fighting ANOTHER horde of zombies? YAWN.
Yeah, we get it: you've been doing it for 10 years.

And it feels like, at this point they'te just banking on the cachet of the name. It dorsn't feel like they're building towards anything. WAtching ANOTHER Settlement get torched? Didn't they do that MULTIPLE times before?

And Kirkmans other titles have been suffering in comparison due to TWD juggernaut: both Invincible and Outcast ate better titles, IMO, but it's been ice-ages between trades, seems like.

If you read this far, thanks for reading my rant!! And please LMK if you agree/disagree: I'm wondering if people are as divided over title as I am....

Bullet Review:

So Rick saw thousands upon thousands (even though we humans have difficulty doing just that), so therefore, there totally weren't enough zombies killed in this volume.

This volume was just so dry and dull, which made the parts I hate about Walking Dead even worse - the fact that Rick Grimes is right because Rick Grimes is right and the fact that Carl is a psychopath in training that people are too stupid (and too scared of Rick Grimes to say anything about) to recognize.

I am astounded that Neegan is still around and that the authors thought that going the redemption route is going to make us forget about his heinous actions in previous books.

And then there's the fact that this volume suddenly has about 16 trillion characters that for some unknown reason ABSOLUTELY NEED POVs. And not just POVs but rapidfire ones - pages are filled with 16 panels, each row of 4 representing a "different character", which you know simply because they use different names in the dialogue boxes.

I've never been a fan of this series, mostly because of Rick Grimes and his Marty Stuism, but I have actually enjoyed volumes in the past. Some of the characters have been good - hell, Maggie, Andrea, and Michonne , when the authors bother to give a f@#$, can be amazing female characters, sorely lacking in fiction and media these days. But here the women get somewhat shafted. Andrea serves to boost Rick's self-esteem - get a Viagra, man. Michonne barely gets any time and certainly no character development and the authors are determined that Maggie should live alone and in the past with the dearly departed Glenn. Instead, let's follow this dude Vincent (who is he?), Aaron (huh?) and Tara (what again?).

This was a low-point for me - may even be one of the worst that I've read in TWD.

It is on. The war with the Whisperers is on and will our group of survivors survive the latest installment of war with the help of the other communities?

I have been a fan of this arc with the Whisperers since the beginning as I felt like it breathed new life into this long running series. Unfortunately, I felt this collection was a little lackluster. Maybe I am just desensitized to this series by now. Our group of survivors get into a conflict with another group, they go to war, suffer casualties but eventually will overcome the odds and survive. I think that was part of it but my enjoyment suffered from the huge amount of characters. Some of them I just don't care about and some I don't even recognize. Devoting time to them just didn't do it for me and I felt like this collection was prolonged into the next collection when I was hoping for a conclusion. I will praise this collection for one aspect. I care about Negan. I do not understand why fans have been enamored by this character and I have said in previous reviews that he should have been disposed of by now. I have to retract that statement now because I want more Negan. I never thought I would say that.

I don't think that it is possible to read a bad collection from this series. This wasn't my favorite as I feel like the writers drag out stories and this one of those times. There were some moments that I did really enjoy but not enough conclusion to thoroughly enjoy this collection.

The "Whisperers" plotline continues, basically to where you would expect, with the beginning of a war. Some alliances are holding, others are faltering. Some people are lost. I like this plot better than the "Negan" plot before it, but, unfortunately, it's going in a direction we've seen before. Still fun, and it's not over.

This was one of the better volumes in recent memory. We finally see the big battle with the Whisperers (but it's not over yet...) and we get to see more character development, particularly with Negan.

This remains one of the strongest comics being published, although it's really grown far beyond the usual horror comic. If you like the show, you should read the comic. It's a little different, but in its own way just as good. (Some may say better!)

I didn’t review each volume separately. This is the full review I promised upon series completion.

**************************

Well God Damn

It’s been a ride. The thing that stands out to me the most about this series is how quickly it flew by. I’ve never flipped pages as frantically as I did with this title. The intrigue was as relentless as the violence and emotional peaks.

This really isn’t a series about zombies. It’s about everything around the zombies. The main focus is the nature of humanity stripped bare, and that’s highlighted on a micro level (individual characters and relationships) as well as a sociological macro level.

Throughout this run, we are shown the boons and pitfalls of pretty much every form of government. Egalitarian societies, extreme capitalism, tribal communities that have abandoned humanity, and everything in between.

Each time our cast encounters a new society, it changes them.

We also see people grow and wither. This book explores what matters most about us when we’ve been reduced to our most basic and primal elements.

There were parts of this story that moved me to tears. The suspense often invaded my dreams. I was so incredibly invested, and this tale remained with me even when it sat closed on my nightstand.

I really cannot recommend this series enough. The entire damn thing. It’s just too beautiful, too sincere and too real. The show is NOTHING compared to this comic. It’s not even a pale imitation. It’s simply unworthy. These pages are mighty. Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, Stefano Guadiano and Cliff Rathburn and Image comics created magic here. This is literature and should be taught as a class in universities.

Well done!
