So. Elliot finds a light bulb, learns Vlad's lab is gross, cleans his lab, Vlad gets mad, yells at Elliot, Serge yells at Vlad, Vlad tries to apologize, Elliot thinks about going home but needs the money for her sick mom, and Vlad manages a nice apology.
And yeah. On the upside, these are short. I've listed them as humor, but they aren't so much funny as silly. I've got them listed under horror, but it's not scary - just kind of/sort of/maybe Mad Scientist adjacent? I don't really know what the genre here is, to be honest. I picked this from Hoopla because it looked like a cute Spooktober read, so I'm counting it towards that. I've got the 4th volume downloaded, so there's no turning back now.
I'm glad that Elliot is finally doing something and that she and the doc are finally managing to form some sort of communication. Wished there was more plot to this, yet again, but the art is really amazing and I love the way speech bubbles are modified depending on the situation. The ending - yay for Elliot!
Honestly this series was quite fun to read, even if it was slow. It was a really interesting premise and I enjoyed reading it a lot. I noticed in the authors notes there was supposed to be a 2nd and 3rd arc, but as of right now...only 3 volumes are out completing the 1st arc. It's a shame cos I was enjoying this!
Beginning on Elly Torres’ second day on her new job after her long first day in Volume Two, she doesn’t know what to expect next or in fact what she’s actually supposed to do. Linda Sejic’s Blood Stain Volume Three completes the first book of Sejic’s webcomic as Elly, Vlad, and Serge have to decide if they can get along with one another or not.
Waking up late in the morning, Elly nervously hopes that Vlad has not been waiting on her only the reader to find out that Vlad himself has overslept. As Vlad desperately attempts to get ready for the class he’s teaching, his demeanor and instructions to Elly just confuse her. So interpreting her duties as best she can, Elly thoroughly cleans his lab while Vlad embarrassingly falls asleep in the middle of his class. Upon returning an upset Vlad can’t believe the pristine condition and angrily tells Elly she overstepped her duties. While Elly wonders about her future, especially as her family’s situation isn’t improving, Serge argues with Vlad about his behavior over the years and later Vlad realizes how much better the lab is organized.
Unlike the first two volumes, the description of what occurs in this particular volume is straightforward as some sort of resolution has to be made about Elly’s character. In addition, the working relationship between Vlad and Serge comes to fore as it impacts Elly and is used by Sejic to give both characters more development. Given that this chapter ends the first Book, or story arc, of Blood Stain the final panel is somewhat predicable but only if you’ve read the first two books but it’s a rewarding final panel because of the journey we’ve seen Elly go on.
As a longtime fan of Sejic’s webcomic, it was a pleasure to have on paper the story I’ve enjoyed online. While Blood Stain Volume Three might be an ending, but it’s just the beginning of the story that is finished and there is more interesting that will be happening with Elly, Vlad, and Serge to come. So if you haven’t read either of the first two volumes, then I encourage you to check them out.
Now that Elliot’s new job is in full swing, she’s starting to realize that Vlad doesn’t have any idea what he wants her to do. Her fears become reality when she deep cleans the entire lab only to find it was the wrong move. Vlad’s messy lab was apparently organized according to his needs, but now it’s been disturbed, and he is not happy.
While not much happens in each volume, I’ve been really enjoying this series. It’s a funny little slice of life series that showcases the author’s beautiful artwork. I’ve decided to view each volume as a glimpse into Elliot’s life because they move very slowly. If I were to read one volume alone rather than pick up the following volume shortly after, I think I’d have forgotten all about it. It’s cute and funny, but I think that the entire first three volumes could actually be the first volume.
Because of this, I’ve decided to let the next three volumes stack up so I can read them back-to-back as well. There’s just not enough happening to read a single volume and then leave off until the next one is available. I know I sound disappointed and possibly a little bored, but I really am enjoying them. They’re cute and funny, and if you’re someone who prefers a very slow-moving plot, I highly recommend this series. If you’re someone who prefers extremely fast paced plots, this is probably not something you’ll enjoy because it’s going to be too slow for you. However, if it still sounds up your alley, I recommend letting several volumes stack up so you can read them all back-to-back.
I'm not sure if I'm going to continue with this series. The 3 volumes were ok, but the pace is really slow and the characters' interactions are full of miscommunications that could be solved easily if they just talked to each other.
Reread this volume to get through my reading slump and it's still so entertaining. I love that even though we're at the beginning of the story, the main leads have Chemistry (hehe get it?)
Vol 3 in the series ''Blood Stain'' concludes the first book, and the first arc of this story. So far I've read all the books within this year.
I started reading this series as I am a fan of the artis/writer's husbands work, and thought I would give her work a go. While I don't exhactly share her humor, I do find the story enjoying.
In the beginning I thought it a bit slow, not much happened, but by the time I got to vol 3, and was made avare that this was just the first part of the series and made the way it was on purpus, it turned out to not be a problem.
The characters are fun and individual, and the fact that I think I know what is going to happen because of something from early on in Sunstone, makes the series even more fun to read.
Needless to say, I'm looking forward to the next arc!
What was funny the first time, or maybe even the second time, might not be funny anymore after the third time. After the second volume I wondered whether the story had started or it was still part of the introduction. the answer to that is that the first 3 volumes are part of the introduction. So there is more to come.
Volume 3 gives you more of of what's been established in the first two books. For me, that is great because I've really enjoyed the series to this point. It continues the nice artwork and humor that drew me into the series. The story felt like a nice extension of the second volume and brought a sort of understanding between Elly and Vlad.
Something is finally happening, but still too slow to properly engage me though. Nonetheless the characters are very fun and the banter makes it a worthy read.
🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 - ᴄʜᴀʀᴀᴄᴛᴇʀꜱ 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑 - ᴘʟᴏᴛ 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑 - ᴡʀɪᴛɪɴɢ 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 - ᴀʀᴛᴡᴏʀᴋ ° 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑 - ꜰɪɴᴀʟ ʀᴀᴛɪɴɢ ° So I like this volume and I'm enjoying the characters and the growth they experience, especially Vlad, he really needed to grow and change as a character. But the plot itself is just a little slow. And I don't mind slow at all tbh, it's just catching me a little off guard cause I didn't expect slow from a comic called Blood Stain. All the cover artwork sells it as being intense, a little dark maybe, possibly even dramatic, but it really isn't anything of those things.
That being said, I do enjoy the subversion of Vlad's character. He's initially built up to be a mad scientist type, but really he's just an OCD loner, socially awkward, and has a tendency to nod off in the middle of the day like an old man. And yet strangely at other times, he feels very capable and confident. I can't get a read on him at all. He feels at times like two different characters. Time will tell how he further develops.
The problem with Blood Stain is that it still doesn't really feel like the story has started, and we're three volumes in. I'm not even totally sure what the meat of the story is. But regardless, I do still enjoy this as just a slice-of-life comic in which not much drama happens and the characters just amble through life and their jobs. I just hadn't initially expected this series to be a slice of life when going into it. But now I know, I'll adjust my expectations a little.
This third volume started off quite slow like its predecessor, but its progression was definitely stronger overall, despite the slower pacing. If there were half stars, I’d give this one 3.5, but as the rating system stands, I’m keeping it at 3.
This volume centered on character development and relationships between the characters, and there were portions that I think were a bit too drawn out and repetitive. For example, sometimes a character would say something to someone else, and they’d talk about that point. A bit later, the other character would somehow bring that point up again, and they’d talk through the same information in detail rather than simply referencing it.
By the end of this volume, the plot seemed to have a bit more direction, and I had more appreciation for the different characters and their situations. I think one of the main issues so far has been that I’ve been expecting some sort of big plot thing to happen, but I don’t think it’s that kind of story, even though it may appear to be from the premise.
I do recommend this series for those who enjoy slower-paced, slice-of-life type stories that focus more on characters and relationships than plot. I’m still interested to see how this develops and will be picking up volume 4.
My positives and negatives of this graphic are really just following on from my thoughts on the previous two, the art of the entire graphic is really good but the pacing is still way too slow.
Just as the story feels like it’s actually picking up I learn that there are plans for 9 more volumes to come out in three volume arcs, all I can say is that I think this series would suite better to have an arc a volume if the pace of the story is going to remain the same in the rest of these volumes. I think I’ll wait to pick up volume 4 until 5 and 6 are out so I can read them in arcs which I think might take a while as I know that Linda has only been able to put six issues on Webtoons this year but considering the fourth volume got published this year it could be a sign that things are picking up.
Well, this was better than the last one. Regardless, I don’t think I’ll be continuing with this series. Normally I can get behind stories where nothing much happens, but the characters in this series just aren’t really gripping me. I truly don’t feel invested enough in their lives and personalities, which makes the slow pace frustrating. I think part of the frustration for me might be the reliance on miscommunication to continue the story. Most of the problems encountered so far by the characters could have been solved by a simple conversation. Since the miscommunication trope is one of my least favorites I find myself just becoming frustrated with the characters instead of endeared to them. The artwork is beautiful, but that by itself really isn’t enough to get me to keep reading.
Elly has been in here new job just a couple of days but she is still wondering why she was hired. Her boss is eccentric to say the least and the good-looking cook is very cryptic. When she tries to help by cleaning up the lab, she is yelled at, railed at, and made to feel unwanted. But just as she plans on slinking back home in disgrace, she gets a short call from her sister and a note from her boss that lets her know she is appreciated. A check also helps. It will be interesting to see what occurs in the next story arc.
A young chemistry graduate goes to work for a “mad” scientist – nothing much happens
A young woman struggling to find a job gets hired by a “mad” scientist. The plot again takes its time in this third volume as Elliott – our heroine – discovering that she has still not been given a definite role and ends up in confrontation with her boss, Vlad.
With humour and fine cartoony illustrations, this volume is entertaining and fun. Some white lettering on black background which is not easy to read in the digital edition.
Still fun, but a little disappointing on two counts. First, after three volumes it feels like the story finally seems to get going and second, I had been following the story on Deviant Art for a several years and decided to pick up these books so that I could see what happens next (thinking for some strange reason that in-print/make-money story would be ahead of the freely available comic story) and discovered that the online story is actually further along.
4 stars again! This is really the end of "book one" as it's put. I personally enjoy the extras, but I understand the criticisms of them (for all three books, but especially the first one).
I like all the characters established so far, I find the series fun so far and feel like it's a good slice of life comic. I see that the forth book has just come out and that there are plans for about nine books total. I hope I can remember to keep up with it and return with each release.
I love the art of this series so much. I love the characters; Ellie is a cutie-patootie and Vlad is a great grump.
So the thing keeping me from actually loving these collections is the repetition. I think there was literally whole sentences of dialog repeated within a few pages of each other. And in a "this is a narrative device" kind of way, but just because a story point was completely rehashed.
The saga continues. Ellie's job is finally confirmed as permanent. Now, if she only new what she was actually supposed to do. This volume remains just as weird and wonderful as the first two.
NOTE: Volumes 1-3 are intended to form the first "book" of the "Blood Stain" saga. I will write a short capsule review for this entire sequence and save it as the review for the first volume.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
