No technology is as dangerous to humanity as the things that make us human.
After the Parallel War, the remnants of humanity are scattered between two universes. When the only way to travel between them becomes obsolete through the discovery of a new, instantaneous travel technology, plans to unite the human race quickly dissolve into personal plots of revenge that have drastic consequences for the entire human race.
What people have been
"A fast-paced plot that grabs you and doesn't let go!" -Trevor S.
"Well I was going to just read a few pages but then I got sucked in. Thanks!" -James Van Niel (an original beta-reader from NY!)
"Emotional twists and turns line a political terrorist plot rooted in an undying thirst for redemption. Love it!" -Ruth Chamberlain (an original beta-reader from PA!)
"... it keeps you turning the page. Thanks, asshole, I was supposed to go to sleep two hours ago!"
There is so much to jump right into that maybe the first couple of chapters could have been their own book?? lol I really liked it I just wish there was a sequel already.
I was fortunate enough to discover Jesse when this story was shopped around in writer's groups. I don't write myself, but I like to work with writers who need beta readers. Jesse asked me to read this and I'm glad I did. This book covers a lot of ground. Basically there are two parallel universes full of people trying to rebuild society after what seems to be an apocalyptic falling out called the Parallel War. Everyone wants to move to this new planet Threa, but apparently the only way to get there is to lie, cheat, and steal, and make everyone hate each other while you're doing it.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get onboard the Lawson train while he's early in this series. He is writing the next book and I know it's going to be a huge hit.
there is plenty here to love and I’d read another by Lawson
What I liked: pov switching, action, tackling parallel universes
What drove me nuts: with a proofreader would have been such a better reading experience, with a good editor this talented writer could win such an enthusiastic audience - a book in this state cheats the reader a bit
I’d read more of these characters, their world(s), this author
Burrow by Jesse Lawson is the first book in the Parallel science fiction series. The book is based off of the idea that there are two parallel universes and both of them are filled with humans. This is a book that would appeal most to an audience of young adults and adults who enjoy and understand the idea of parallel words. The book begins after the Parallel War, which was a war between the two universes that was apocalyptic in nature. There is a new technology that allows people to travel instantly from one universe to the other; the technology was created with the hope of bridging the gap between humanity in order to bring people together. Yet, it seems that people just cannot get along as grudges and revenge may bring humanity to its end.
Burrow by Jesse Lawson is a book that reminded me a little bit of the TV show Flash with how there are parallel universes with humans as the main race. I personally liked the fact that the author did not waste time with background information, but instead dropped me right into the thick of things after the Parallel War. I liked how the book was written for the average science fiction reader with how it avoided overly complicate jargon and put everything in easy to understand English. I found the idea of the new planet Threa to be inspiring as I saw it as a new start for humanity, but that I found myself sad with how people turned on each other and created feeling of hatred and anger in order to get themselves to Threa. Overall, I liked this different take on parallel universes and I am excited for the second book in the Parallel series.
