Karada Sagashi #1

re:member 01

Rate this book

I read this for free on the Japanese Amazon website as part of a promotion for the movie. I watched the movie first, so it was interesting to go back and read the manga afterwards and make comparisons. I only read the first volume, though, so I imagine a number of the plot elements that differentiate the two that I noticed are actually just later on in the series.

In the comic, basically we have a high school where one of the girls suddenly gets, I don't know, abducted or transformed by the ghost. Anyway, this girl apparently chooses a selection of her classmates to take part in karada sagashi. These unlucky few are sucked into a time loop and must find the body parts of the previously mentioned haunted student, which have been spread out and hidden somewhere in the school. The five or so kids "playing" the game relive the same day over and over again, and each day they are hunted down by a blood-covered child carrying a toy rabbit. Plus there are a bunch of rules they have to follow, such as whether they can look back at the bloody kid and stuff like that.

With all the creepy rules outlined before each chapter, I was getting major Death Note vibes. The comic also seemed almost completely uninterested in its own characters, mostly focusing on the mechanics of the death-trap they are in. The movie, though, is much more of a... well... the characters basically become friends and have to deal with their issues throughout the movie sort of a deal. The comic is more hardcore, with characters retaining damage after each death, but in the movie they are entirely reset with no body scars so to speak.

Anyway, I had a reasonably good reading experience.

Like a mix between the Korean survival horror game The Coma and the Japanese survival horror game Corpse Party. It's great.

It's also fuckin weird that there's never been an official English translation of this series despite the sequel series currently started publishing in English through Shueisha's Jump+. And only the first 40 out of 170 chapters of this have had scanlations so far, so I may need to rely Google translate to finish it. Grrr.

Goodbye sleep, it was nice to have known you.
This was so creepy and so entertaining! Definitely, something I will keep on reading. I only give this a 4/5 rating in case the next volumes are even better.

Edit: Now that I had some time to think about it, I changed my mind: I'm not going to keep on reading, simply because I am not really into horror-stuff. Not like I had nightmares or something like that, but thinking about this actually makes me nervous in a not-so-good way and stresses me out. So, for now, I'm not going to add it to the list of series that I'm going to continue reading.

This is the first manga I’ve read in my life, so I’m not entirely sure I’m rating it correctly. Suffice to say, I was pleasantly surprised I enjoyed it. I also made the huge mistake of listening to my brother and reading it at night. Scared doesn’t even start to describe how I felt when I turned one page after the other. Anyway, super original story, definitely horror and definitely worth a try!!
