July Jackson’s job as Holiday Host at the Bellissimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi is more trick than treat when one of her Scary Rich slot tournament players croaks. Then $3,000,000 goes missing. And a couple dressed as condiments—he’s Mustard, she’s Ketchup—might be behind the spooky shenanigans. What’s a Holiday Host to do? Call in the flying monkeys? July turns to the highest level of casino security and meets a boy named Baylor. Just Baylor. From there, it’s all thrills and chills.

I love how these short stories showcase the other characters in the Davis Way series. The stakes were high for July when a guest died and another passed out on Halloween at her holiday event. But the real mystery was only beginning. Enter Just Baylor to clean up the situation. Love the chemistry between Baylor and July. This was a fast fun read and a delightful addition to this terrific series!
From the first sentence, i realized something was different. This didn't sound like Davis Way's voice. *Guess who didn't read the blurb, just saw there was a new story out and hit "buy" quicker than a Double Whammy machine can suck up a twenty. So, a new character, July, enters and boy howdy does it get fun fast. A great read. This proves what a terrific author Gretchen Archer is...July sounds nothing like Davis (i hate it when everyone sounds/speaks the same). How about a nice thanksgiving short?
So, I read this book as soon as I got it, and was reading in bed on my Kindle. I was laughing on page one, and my husband asks what I am laughing at, and I said Gretchens new book. I had to laugh silently the rest of the way through, which was very difficult! I loved the new character July, and hope we see her again very soon. I also loved getting to know Baylor more. I didn't want the book to end!
This is a fast-paced Halloween short story starring July. She is a fun character and the casino is an entertaining setting. This book is a funny mystery with some romance too. I would like to check out more of Gretchen Archer's books.
When it comes to full, amped up scale hilarity, no one does it better than this author. Always a fan of the Davis Way series, Ms Archer has demonstrated her writing genius through her latest heroine, July Jackson...just as whacky and seriously funny, July is on par for the lightning fast pace set throughout each book in the series. Once you start reading, the story takes on a life of its own, twisting and turning, changing directions and characters faster than you can imagine. All the while, you're laughing hysterically at the madcap goings-on flying left and right.
I hope to see more of July in the next Davis Way book, and of course Baylor as well...he is the perfect foil to July's racing mind, or should I say Baylor has met his match in the likes of firecracker July.
This book was provided by the author, I am voluntarily providing my honest review.
I don't think Gretchen Archer can ever write a Davis Way book that doesn't deserve a 5 star rating!
I was surprised at the start of the book that the story didn't read like Archer's usual writing style for Davis and thought I'd picked up the wrong book. This short was written from a different character's point of view, which explained the change in the writing style, but Archer's dazzling sense of humour immediately shone though the first few passages, and I knew this would be a good read indeed!
Don't even try to keep up with “Double Jinx” because it goes where it goes at double speed - just keep reading and it will reach an end (whether that end makes any sense is another question entirely). It does, kind of! Casino worker July Jackson finds herself way out of her depth as Halloween fever takes over the Bellissimo Casino in Biloxi, Missouri. There's a drunk witch, a dead zombie, millions of dollars she's not sure what to do with, and a disconcertingly handsome security guard. It's good fun. 3 Stars.
This series has been a hoot so far, just fun to read, laugh out loud books for Book 1 & 2 so far. looking forward to reading the rest of the series. Read each book in a day :-) Can't put it down. lol
was a fun, laugh out loud book, full of mystery, who dunit, love, dressing up as someone else, gambling and so much more.
Super short story told by July, a Holiday Host who gets embroiled in a plot and ends up finding Baylor to help her.
It was nice to see Baylor get a "hopefully" lasting romance. July was super smart and I could see her joining the team. I think it is hilarious the reason the plot failed was the idiots
A short outing at the Bellissimo. It was missing Davis Way (except her baby stroller), but I didn't mind. A fun introduction to July, and any book featuring Baylor is always a plus. My only complaint was it is very, very short, but on the plus side it's easy to find the time to read it.
I decided to try another one of the books and I will say this was much better than the holiday book. It is much faster paced and packs a lot of twists and turns into the story with a surprising ending. A fun read.
A cute short story with a new character and another heist for the casino. A good introduction and continued story line of a couple of characters. A quick read with some action of fun. A good read.
This was a cute, short story. Baylor was the lead male and a new character named July Jackson was the female lead. There was an incident or two. Nice chemistry between the leads.

Very short, but a great way to intro a reader to July Jackson. Archer's style is fast-paced, which suits the Vegas-like setting of this Biloxi, Mississippi, casino. Rather obvious on the whodunnit front, but July's mental trip to get there in the end was entertaining.
Disappointed it was this short, but that's just incentive to go grab the rest of the series and start from the beginning, though I'm not sure if July is the protagonist of the Davis Way Crime Caper Mystery Series...
I was given this book for free at an author event and my review is voluntary. This is the first book that I have read from this author. I have fallen in love with this series! It is well written. The lead female character ( July) is fast thinking and fun. The casino resort security head is sexy,...and single, until he meets July and in a very dangerous situation. Even tho this is a novella that takes place in just one night, it has so much fast action in it. As you read it you can feel the excitement in the story. Good and fun read that I would highly recommend to everyone. Can't wait to read more of this series.
This book just teased me enough to make me anxiously await the next Davis Way adventure!! I'm already a fan of July and can't wait to see what will happen when she meets Davis! Perfect short story and a fabulous addition to the series!! Gretchen Archer creates wonderful and lovable characters and stories that keep you coming back for more!! Loved this book!
Bellissimo Resort & Casino has a lot of zany staff and July Jackson, Holiday Host, is one of them.
When a high roller dressed as a zombie in July's group dies, the accounting staff fail to appear to transfer $3 Million, and security staff aren't manning the door, July is in trouble.
Gretchen Archer has written another funny cozy to add to the Davis Way Crime Caper series.
I'm looking forward to encountering July & Baylor in the upcoming Double Up in March 2017. (How can I wait that long!!!!) :-)
I really love the character in the Double series- Davis Way. All that being said, this short set in the Casino and involving two "assistants" really doesn't work, in part because it opens smack in the middle of an ongoing scenario that you can't tell if its a mystery or match.com.
July's backstory doesn't matter to the story, and the cryptic nature of this short is, in fact, about 25% gives us just that. Archer must be getting ready to interweave July's expertise into her family situation.
Meantime, I'm sorry but I suggest you step over this short and "move along"
