This trade collects the first comic book chapter of the epic series airing on Netflix. From days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe comes VOLTRON: LEGENDARY DEFENDER! When Team Voltron takes on a dangerous training mission in deep space, Coran, Princess Allura's majordomo, is captured by an ancient enemy. It will take teamwork, smarts, and, of course, Voltron, to save their friend's life. This galaxy-spanning adventure is a never-before-seen chapter of the epic animated series reboot by show writers Tim Hedrick (Avatar: The Last Airbender) and Mitch Iverson.
Heck yeah! that's what I'm talking about! (I actually wanted to use Keith's Heck yeah, but I couldn't find it... so Lotor would do) even though it was technically a comic, not exactly a novelization. (I'm NOT complaining!)
You all probably know by now, I LOVE new material on my fandoms, I read a lot of Fanfiction (I even write some) & this canon made me happy. (especially after those simple boring incomplete other so-called short episode novelization I've read this year) the arts were beautiful Quiznak! I was rolling on the ground with laughter! seeing my favourite characters, reading new stories about them, were awesome!
Lance's & Pidge's POV were the best! (Hope we had Keith's too)
Have you seen Voltron: Legendary Defender series yet? If not, do it! It's one of the best remakes I have ever seen. And you don't need to know anything about Voltron franchise in order to board this train. Everything is explained and wonderfully done in the new series.
Then come back and read this comic. It's not a waste of time or anything, in fact it gives us more info on old allies and friends, and debts remained unpaid.
Also, the main spotlight of this comic was the feelings of certain paladins toward their companions, and what they think of themselves.
It was quite interesting to see how Pidge thinks of the crew (including their weaknesses haahhaah).
Voltron is a remake of Golion, Voltron: Defenders of the universe, and other adaptations, but it's very different and unique compared to others.
I suggest you read this comic after the first season as It has some spoilers included.
Art is, also, amazing. And apparently, there is more to come before the third season is out. I can't wait.
Since the Voltron series is on Netflix, it was cool to see the characters’ voices running through my head as I was reading their speech bubbles. The colors that involved explosions in different scenes were great. As an upgrowing artist, I think the colors went together very well. Tim, the author of the series, your series will keep on growing, and I look forward to it. Although your fandom is a bit excessive, it will be my second favorite. A fandom is basically like a very large group of people that have the same interests of a book, movie, show.
I didn't realize Voltron was getting the same type of graphic novel follow up that some of my other favorite animated shows (Avatar: The Last Airbender; The Legend of Korra) have received. With the release of the second season on Netflix and my increasing attachment to the show, I went in search of more, more, more and discovered that the first set of Voltron comics have been compiled in a book that I definitely want to own.
This story takes place during the events of the first season (so the sense of peril is minimal - it's obvious that all the characters will emerge intact) and carries the same vibrant visuals and clever, funny, surprisingly touching dialogue. In a world where robotic lions combine into a giant humanoid robot that fights other robotic beasts with a sword, you might not expect much emphasis on character development. This is where the showrunners and writers aimed their attention, ensuring that the characters always come first, with the action as an afterthought (albeit an impressive one).
I thoroughly enjoyed this collection and look forward to future volumes.
Love the show, and this is a nice side story that takes place probably somewhere towards the end of season 1 or early 2 (the crew is aware that Pidge Gunderson is in fact a female). I especially loved the issue where Lance tells the story - hilarious. Definitely worth picking up
In all seriousness? This was amazing, fast-paced, I got to see more of my beloved Garrison trio and every chapter kept getting more and more interesting. Moreover, the artwork was simply stunning! If this had turned out to be an actual hour-long episode, I wouldn't have complained either. It'd have very likely become one of my faves.
Yeah, Voltron has its flaws, the characters are based on archetypes, whatever... "It's a kids sh–" DON'T BOTHER ME WITH THAT BULLSHIT. Just a reminder that impartiality is not welcome here: I love VLD so much. This show has helped me during my toughest times this year, it inspired me and whether it was to plaster a goofy grin on my face or make my insides squirm, this squad of space ranger partners has really hit home. All in all, it is not perfect, of course; but it is for me in its own way, though.
I feel weird for thinking it was too fast paced? Like on one page they're introduced to their challenge or the alien they have to defeat and then on the next page its over, the whole riddle part was a bit ??? anyway, it was a pretty good way to go back to the characters after having caught up and rewatched the same episodes over and over and gave a little more insight, also Lance was as perfect as ever ^.^
I really enjoyed this from start to finish and had read it in it's entirety in one sitting. It had great visuals, exactly like the show itself, and great dialogue with the right amount of humour. If you're a fan of the show the comics do not disappoint.
Voltron: Legendary Defenders Vol 1 takes place directly after the events of Season 1, Episode 10. While Allura rests after saving the Balmera, Coran takes the Paladins out for a training mission which soon turns into a rescue mission when Coran is held captive in exchange for a impossible-to-get Pearl. The Paladins quickly take off to find and collect this pearl while having to defeat monsters and save people along the way.
This feel like a sped-up episode of the show. The characters are pretty accurate for season 1 (I read this after watching season 5 and the characters have grown up a little since then, so going backwards slightly a bit off putting). The plotline, character/monster/planet designs and humor are pretty show accurate as well. I really enjoyed having some chapters shown from the perspective of a single character (Lance and Pidge both get this in the middle of the book). I also really enjoyed the show-accurate artwork. It's got a nice mix of the show and a thinner line, sketchier comic book style. It's really nice to look at.
My biggest issues with this come from some arguably nitpicky continuity issues. For example, Pidge's chapter mentions Coran being like a mentor to her. Which, from my knowledge of the show, simply isn't true (or at least was never shown or mentioned). And the fact this establishes it's part in a very specific timeline in the show but is never actually spoken of in the show. Also, the comic tends to go constantly, never really giving us a break or really hitting that sweet spot of really pulling you in like some of the more memorable episodes of the show. There isn't much here other than just a really fun story with the Paladins. We never actually get any additional information.
That being said, it is fun, but only if you're a fan of the show because, as stated before, it takes place inbetween episodes in season 1. There is no entry information for newcomers. You're thrown right in the middle of it. But, if you're a fan, you'll get a kick out of another fun adventure with the Paladins of Voltron while you wait for Netflix to release the next season.
Before you read this comic, you really should go watch the tv show. This volume acts as a side story to the cartoon and takes place after the events in Episode 10 of Season 1. And it's all about a paladin training exercise gone awry which always makes for fun times for the Voltron crew.
I really enjoyed reading this volume. It was fast-paced and action-packed while also managing to retain the quirkiness and humor of the show while giving us more insight into the paladins and their personalities. I absolutely adore the art style of this comic. It's very similar to the animation style of the show and it's awesome!
If you haven't watched the show, go do that now! And if you're like me and just want more Voltron goodness, go and grab a copy of this volume. You won't be disappointed!
This graphic novel made me so happy!!! It's so endearing. It's like an episode that takes place after the Balmera arc in season 1. It has fantastic content that I wish were animated, with lots of fun action and humor. There were things about it that were super cute, too (love the picture of the paladins holding the cookies/cake they baked!). The artwork was bright and gorgeous! There were so many pages I just wanted to tear out and stick to the wall so I can see them all the time. I also like how it expands the VLD universe even more by showing us new planets and aliens.
Ultimately, keep in mind that it's an extra filler type of thing. It succeeds at being entertaining for the fans that want to see more of the paladins interacting with each other and training, but it's not trying to advance the overall plot from the show nor is it aiming to give major character development.
寝られなかったからこのコミックを読んだ~ 好きだったけどちょっと読みにくい。フォントがちょっと好きじゃなかった。全体的に好きだった~ コミックコンで特にサインが出来た!笑 I couldn't sleep last night so I read this comic~ I really liked it but it was a bit hard to read. I didn't really like the font. Overall I liked it though~ Especially since I was able to get it signed at comic con! lol **We tried multiple times to get tickets to the limited Voltron signing and I was able to get one on the first try but my friend didn't. She really loves Voltron so I gave her my ticket so she could go and meet the cast of the show so she took my comic up for me :) I really love Voltron too, I used to watch it every morning when I was a kid but I've never watched the new show so I thought she should go
I'm currently watching the NETFLIX show of Voltron: Legendary Defenders and I love it! My boyfriend could tell you that I'm obsessed with it, in fact he was the one who gave me this book! It was a really great and quick read. I read it in one sitting, cuddling with my dog. Even if one doesn't know how Voltron: Legendary Defenders go, you can't deny that it's fun and hilarious and full of friendship and comedy. The graphics in this book were absolutely amazing, a wannabe graphic artist's dream (aka me). Every single bit of it was beautiful, I was fangirling so hard. So hard! I'm definitely going to re-read this comic again, if just even for the art. For anyone who hasn't watched the show, please do, it's amazing!
If you're a fan of the series on Netflix, you'll absolutely love reading this!
Written by Tim Hendrick, one of the head writers for the series, the first volume revolves around a side adventure that couldn't make it into the show. Our favorite Paladins have to help Coran by obtaining a alien pearl or else he might be out of the picture for good. It had a lot of laughs and a good amount of character development that i'm glad got to be explored in comic book form since it didn't get the multi-episodes it deserved.
This was such a joy to read! I absolutely loved everything about it!
I loved the artwork and the characters. I thought the storyline was simple, but also fast paced and action packed!
I loved that in situations where various characters are speaking within one panel, that we either see their faces in little circles, or the word bubble is colored to match their lions.
I also loved that the narration in two chapters took on an appearance that related to the specific character. So in one chapter, which was from Lance's point of view, there was an old English theme. Then in the chapter from Pidge's point of view, there was a computer coding theme. I thought this was a very nice touch!
The dialogue was perfect and so, so, so funny!
My favorite passage was: “Well Lance hoped Planet Krell was hungry, because it was about to get served a Lance knuckle sandwich with a side of slap sauce."
I cannot wait for another edition!
***Warning!***
The following is a spoiler filled summary. Do not continue if you have not yet read this and do not want to be spoiled!!
A fun adventure set during season one of Voltron Legendary Defender. I had a lot of fun reading this one. Is it great literature, no, do I care, no. It's a fun adventure with some nice art. If you haven't seen the show, go watch it, and then go read this one. I can't get enough Voltron! When is the next adventure?
This training mission is one for the books. Nice little companion piece to the series. The artwork is really cool and the plot development and gimmicks were really enjoyable. :) Good gift for Voltron nerds.
I love this show, and while the art style is just as beautiful and the story is great, it didn't feel like it had the same energy. Part of that just comes from it being in written form, but maybe reading the other volumes will add to it. Still liked it overall though!
The show is good. Well, the first 2 seasons are good. The rest not so much. But this book felt like a letdown. In the show, the scenes and visuals do often feel like a comic, especially with the common split screen effects. But this was never really included in this book.
