Christmas is looking grim for Melissa Allen. She has no one to celebrate with, as her boyfriend of five years left her for her best friend and, after losing her home in a fire, she has nowhere to live. Left without a choice, she accepts the offer to the stay with family friends Rob and Linda Nicholls.
Chris Nicholls is excited about bringing his five-year-old daughter, Jasmine, home to Lakefield, Ontario for her first white Christmas. The trip is a surprise for his parents, though no one is more surprised than Chris when he finds his childhood best friend in his parent's spare room. Surprise soon turns to delight as Chris has always had feelings for Melissa, feelings that are only getting stronger the longer they are together.
But Melissa has had her fill of heartbreak, and isn't willing to fall for a man who is only going to leave. And Jasmine? She doesn't want to share her daddy with anyone. If Chris has any hope of convincing Melissa and Jasmine that they have a future together as a family, he'll need all the mistletoe magic he can get.
Nicki Edwards is a city girl with a country heart. Growing up on a small family acreage on the outskirts of Geelong, she spent her formative years riding horses and pretending the neighbour’s farm was her own.
After spending three years in a regional city in New South Wales, her love of small country towns was further developed. One day she plans to escape to the country with her husband Tim and live on land, surrounded by horses, dogs, cows and sheep. Until then she lives vicariously through the lives of the characters in the rural romance novels she loves to read.
In 2006, when Nicki’s youngest child started school, she returned to university, juggling full time study, part time work and raising four small children, to achieve her dream of becoming a nurse. Always a voracious reader, Nicki’s other dream was to be an author. Nicki writes medical rural romance for Momentum and when she isn’t reading, writing or dreaming about rural life and medical emergencies, she can be found working as a Critical Care Nurse in a busy Intensive Care Unit, where many of her stories and characters are imagined.
Nicki and Tim reside in Geelong, Victoria with their four teenage/young adult children. Life is busy, fun and at times exhausting, but Nicki wouldn’t change it for anything.
Her debut novel, “Intensive Care” was released in January 2015 with Momentum, the digital imprint of Pan Macmillan Australia. Her second novel, “Emergency Response” comes out in October 2015. The third and fourth books in the ‘Escape to the Country’ series, “Life Support” and “Critical Condition” will be released in 2016.
Chris Nicholls was finishing his final shift before a six week break; he had lived in Australia for the past five years and had a little daughter, Jasmine who was the light of his life. This Christmas would be something very new for Jaz – she would get to meet her Canadian grandparents for the first time. Chris was looking forward to going home, but had decided against mentioning it to his parents and siblings – they all loved surprises…
Melissa Allen’s shock had turned to heartbreak when she was taken from her job at the local hospital by the police to her little cottage – the fire had destroyed everything; she had nowhere to go and only the clothes on her back. But when local fireman and long-time family friend Rob Nicholls invited her to stay at their home until she regained her feet, she was overwhelmed.
Chris’ Christmas surprise worked as well as he’d hoped - Jaz loved her grandparents and she delighted them. But there would be rocky days ahead for Jaz and Chris and he wasn’t sure what more he could do…
What an absolutely delightful little story Operation Mistletoe Magic by Aussie author Nicki Edwards is! Beautifully told, the story flowed well from the summer setting in Australia to the stark winter of Ontario with the ice and snow, and incredible cold. Jasmine is a precocious child but an absolute sweetheart and the characters are well crafted and easy to like. Operation Mistletoe Magic is a great “feel good” story, and one that I have no hesitation in recommending.
I’m not a winter person at all and reading books set in winter confirms my dislike of the chilly season however… give me a Christmas romance set in Canada and I can ignore my aversion to all things wintry.
Operation Mistletoe Magic was a lovely, feel-good festive story. The romance was sweet and magical. And, the authors stunning description of Lakefield, Ontario sounded heavenly, a place I’d love to visit one day, though I have been fortunate enough to have visited some of the most exquisite places in Canada.
A glorious novella to read around christmas time or in the winter months in front of a cosy fire.
POPSUGAR Reading Challenge 2020: #30 - A book set in a country beginning with ‘C’
Chris Nicholls, an ER doctor, is returning home to Ontario, Canada for the first time in many years. When he left he was newly married and now as he sets off for a 6-week visit over Christmas he is divorced and a single dad. His daughter, Jasmine, who accompanies him has never met her Canadian grandparents or any of her father's family.
Melissa Allen, a paediatric nurse, has come into some bad luck. In the matter of a few short weeks she broke up with her long time boyfriend, lost her job and her house burnt down. Without any immediate family in the region she is blessed to be taken in by Chris Nicholls parents. Chris and Melissa were best buddies growing up and his childhood home was like a second home to her.
This is a delightful Christmas romance story. It was easy for me to relate to Chris and Melissa's situation as my closest friends growing up were girls. I loved reading of the Ontario winter and the glimpses of Chris and Melissa's antics growing up.
The story flows easily as Edwards writing is excellent. It's a simple romance story told really well with some lovely romantic touches and two very likeable lead characters. The conflict is created between Melissa and Jasmine, Chris' daughter and Edwards portrays this well.
This is the first Nicki Edwards story I've read and I'm sure I'll read others in the future.
Once again Nicki Edwards has delivered another magical story to her "An Escape to the Country" series. This story is all about second chances, friendship, love and most of all family. Nicki Edwards is an automatic buy and she should be yours as well.
This is the second Christmas Novella by Nicki Edwards that I have read and I really enjoyed it. The main characters Melissa and Chris had strong chemistry. It was sweet, which is the level I enjoy, and well written. I loved the Australian and Canadian settings. A perfect read for the Christmas season.
I liked the idea of the story of the writing is too wooden and awkward to get into it. The constant name dropping, awkward dialogue made that the characters never really evolved past cardboard characters.
This was a very interesting story, turning tragedy into hope! The author took two friendships from the past and renewed their hidden love for each other into a bright future. Enjoyed reading this short story!
