Ο «ρουστίκ» τοπικός νόμος, με τη μορφή του απρόβλεπτου υπαστυνόμου Λιφ, βαραίνει πάνω στους υπόπτους –τους γλωσσολόγους του ινστιτούτου–, οι οποίοι, σε πλήρη αντίθεση με την εικόνα φιλικών κι ευγενικών συναδέλφων με αντικείμενο μελέτης τους τα παιδιά, είναι ένα ευέξαπτο τσούρμο, όπου ο ένας μετά βίας ανέχεται τον άλλο. Τα αίματα ανάβουν και οι αλληλοκατηγορίες αρχίζουν να εκτοξεύονται, κι όταν εμφανίζεται και δεύτερο πτώμα, ο Κουκ πρέπει να βασιστεί στη γλωσσολογική του ευφυΐα για να σώσει τη ζωή του.

Αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα δεν το λες. Συνεπώς δεν γίνεται να το κρίνεις ως τέτοιο. Είναι όμως ένα ευχάριστο βιβλίο με μια δόση μυστηρίου καθώς στο ερευνητικό ινστιτούτο υπάρχει κι ένα έγκλημα που πρέπει να διελευκανθεί. Ο Carkeet φτιάχνει αρκετούς ενδιαφέροντες ήρωες που καταφέρνει να ψυχογραφήσει επάξια, καθώς τους χαρακτηρίζει σχεδόν εξ’ ολοκλήρου η επαγγελματική τους ιδιότητα. Αν τους συναντούσες ποτέ στον δρόμο, ίσως να έλεγες ότι είναι ψυχαναγκαστικοί σπασίκλες. Το φαίνεσθαι δεν συνεπάγεται το είναι, ακόμα να το μάθεις; Που θα πει ότι ο Τζέρεμυ Κουκ είναι ένας ωραίος, ιδιαίτερος τυπάς στον οποίο γεννάται το αστυνομικό δαιμόνιο προσπαθώντας με τον τελείως δικό του τρόπο να λύσει το μυστήριο. Τα υπόλοιπα επί σελίδων, στις οποίες η ιστορία είναι δοσμένη με χιούμορ, ίσως και λίγο καυστικό κατά περιπτώσεις.
Κουκ, θα ξανασυναντηθούμε. Όταν θελήσω να χαμογελάσω διαβάζοντας μια ιστορία, θα έρθω στο Ουόμπας να σε βρω.

Υποτίθεται ότι πρόκειται για μυθιστόρημα μυστηρίου, εγώ όμως το διάβασα ως ένα χιουμοριστικό και ελαφρύ κοινωνικό μυθιστόρημα με μια νότα αστυνομικού θρίλερ. Θέλω να πω, υπάρχουν δυο φόνοι και οι αναμενόμενες έρευνες τόσο της αστυνομίας όσο και των πρωταγωνιστών για την εύρεση της ταυτότητας του δολοφόνου, όμως ειλικρινά λίγο με ενδιέφερε αυτό. Απόλαυσα το βιβλίο για την πολύ ωραία γραφή, τους ιδιαίτερους χαρακτήρες και τις διάφορες κουλές καταστάσεις.

Η όλη ιστορία διαδραματίζεται κατά κύριο λόγο στο Ινστιτούτο Ουόμπας της Ιντιάνα, όπου γλωσσολόγοι προσφέρουν τις υπηρεσίες τους στον προσαρτημένο παιδικό σταθμό. Μεταξύ άλλων, οι γλωσσολόγοι θέλουν να κατανοήσουν την γλώσσα και την συμπεριφορά των νηπίων. Πρωταγωνιστής της ιστορίας είναι ο εξαίρετος γλωσσολόγος Τζέρεμι Κουκ, ο οποίος από την μια θέλει να μάθει πως μιλούν τα νήπια, από την άλλη να "ρίξει" την νέα και πανέμορφη βοηθό του ερευνητικού προγράμματος, και επίσης να καταλάβει γιατί βρέθηκε νεκρός ένας συνάδελφός του στο δικό του γραφείο. Ο υπαστυνόμος Λιφ είναι υπεύθυνος για την διαλεύκανση της υπόθεσης, θα έχει να αντιμετωπίσει όμως ένα τσούρμο τρελών γλωσσολόγων, που ο ένας κοιτάει καχύποπτα τον άλλο. Η εύρεση ενός δεύτερου πτώματος θα κάνει τα πράγματα πιο περίπλοκα...

Έγραψα μια μεγαλούτσικη περίληψη για μια απλή ιστορία, αλλά δεν γινόταν αλλιώς. Λοιπόν, η πλοκή μου άφησε την αίσθηση ενός βρετανικού "cozy mystery" μυθιστορήματος, χωρίς όμως αυτή η αίσθηση να επισκιάσει την χιουμοριστική και σατιρική διάθεση του συγγραφέα, καθώς και την όλη σκιαγράφηση της μικρής και κλειστής κοινωνίας του Ινστιτούτου Γλωσσολογίας Ουόμπας της Ιντιάνα. Περισσότερο οι σχέσεις μεταξύ των ιδιότροπων χαρακτήρων καθώς και κάποιες κουλές καταστάσεις μου άρεσαν περισσότερο, παρά το μυστήριο αυτό καθαυτό (που καλούτσικο μου φάνηκε αλλά όχι κάτι το ιδιαίτερο). Επίσης η γραφή με ξετρέλανε, με τις ωραίες περιγραφές και τους απίθανους διαλόγους. Πραγματικά πολύ καλή και ό,τι έπρεπε για να μου φτιάξει το κέφι.

Το βιβλίο δεν έχει και την καλύτερη βαθμολογία στο Goodreads, ίσως γιατί πολλοί το διάβασαν και το βαθμολόγησαν σαν ένα ακόμα αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα. Μπορεί να περίμεναν πιο σφιχτοδεμένη πλοκή, πιο ικανοποιητική λύση του μυστηρίου, περισσότερο σασπένς... ποιος ξέρει; Προσωπικά το απόλαυσα γιατί το διάβασα σαν ένα κωμικοτραγικό κοινωνικό μυθιστόρημα με χιούμορ και έντονη σατιρική διάθεση.

Με τα χρόνια, το πάντα δημοφιλές είδος του αστυνομικού μυθιστορήματος, έχει απομυζήσει κάθε εκδοχή επαγγέλματος ώστε να σχηματίσει πρωτότυπες περσόνες εξιχνίασης εγκλημάτων. Οι μάτσο αστυνομικοί έδωσαν τη θέση τους σε αντισυμβατικούς ερασιτέχνες ντετέκτιβ, δημοσιογράφους, καθηγητές-λύτες μυστηρίων, αρχαιολόγους, ιερείς κ.ο.κ. Γιατί όχι λοιπόν και σε έναν γλωσσολόγο-ιδιοφυία;

Σε μία πρότυπη δομή-νηπιαγωγείο όπου η φωνολογική συμπεριφορά των παιδιών παρακολουθείται διακριτικά από επιφανείς αλλά και ιδιόρρυθμους ψυχογλωσσολόγους, δύο απανωτές δολοφονίες ταράζουν τα ήρεμα νερά, φέρνοντας στην επιφάνεια πάθη, κουτσομπολιά και αντικρουόμενα συμφέροντα. Ξαφνικά, τα μοτίβα ομιλίας των παιδιών αρχίζουν να εμπλέκονται με την ταυτοποίηση του δολοφόνου. Ο περιορισμένος κύκλος υπόπτων, σε συνδυασμό με τις ανορθόδοξες τεχνικές του ρουστίκ τοπικού σερίφη, δημιουργούν ομόκεντρους κύκλους γύρω από έναν γλωσσολογικό λαβύρινθο.

Η λυδία λίθος για την επίλυση του μυστηρίου βρίσκεται στην περίεργη ιδιόλεκτο ενός νηπίου, ενώ οι έρευνες περιπλέκονται ακόμη περισσότερο από τις ιδιόχειρες σημειώσεις του δολοφονηθέντος μονόχνοτου γλωσσολόγου. Αν και Αμερικανός, ο συγγραφέας χρησιμοποιεί ένα βρετανικό, φλεγματικό, υπόρρητο αλλά καυστικό χιούμορ και αποδομεί τόσο κάποια αστυνομικά κλισέ, όσο και τις αποστειρωμένες φιγούρες των επιφανών ερευνητών. Αυτός ο λεπτεπίλεπτος σαρκασμός λειτουργεί (ενίοτε) αποτελεσματικά, όμως όλα μα όλα τα υπόλοιπα κυλάνε τόσο προβλέψιμα και τόσο επίπεδα, χωρίς εξάρσεις, χωρίς κρεσέντο, ενώ ακόμη και οι ανατροπές έρχονται σαν jump scare σε περιθωριακό b-movie.

Ο κανόνας που θέλει αριστουργήματα να γράφονται πάνω στην πιο κλισέ θεματολογία και αντίστοιχα οι πρωτότυπες ιδέες να βυθίζονται στην άβυσσο των αμήχανων συγγραφικών χειρισμών, επιβεβαιώνεται και εδώ. Σίγουρα, οι φιλόλογοι-γλωσσολόγοι θα χαμογελάσουν συνωμοτικά με την πρωτότυπη εμπλοκή γλωσσολογικών και αστυνομικών όρων, όμως οι υπόλοιποι, ακόμη και αν ενθουσιαστούν με την κεντρική ιδέα θα γυρίσουν την τελευταία σελίδα σκεπτόμενοι «ε και;».

Ένα βιβλίο με πρωτότυπη σύλληψη, σίγουρα όχι κακό από λογοτεχνικής πλευράς, αλλά δεν μπορώ να το προτείνω παρά μόνο σε όσους βρίσκουν το θέμα απολύτως ακαταμάχητο.

A 30-year-old linguistic mystery?!? Really! Peopled with socially awkward characters and set in a research institute where linguists study the verbal and pre-verbal interactions of toddlers in a daycare setting, this was as geeky fun as I hoped it would be. It’s got a pretty typical mystery framework (dead body, investigator, clues, suspects, murder weapon, and satisfying resolution) and it usually bugs me to read in genres that stick close to their formulas. But there was so much word nerdy fun mixed into this book that I didn’t care. Because for me this book wasn’t really a whodunit so much as a look at the ways language unites and divides people. It’s not heavy or particularly deep, and yet Carkeet manages to really explore through laugh-out-loud situations the intricacies of human communication and misunderstanding. Jeremy Cook, the protagonist, is almost totally lacking in social graces but remains likable. And even though this mystery followed a genre formula, I was still delighted by the solution. Funny, clever, and fun…I will be reading Carkeet’s other books.

Une drôle d'histoire. Une équipe de linguistes mène l'enquête sur un meurtre et se soupçonnent les uns les autres. Ça m'a fait penser au Dix petits nègres d'Agatha Christie. C'est un polar très psychologique, un peu philosophique, qui lance des pistes de réflexion sur le bien et le mal chez l'être humain. C'est comme si nous étions foncièrement mauvais ou du moins fortement prédisposés à penser du mal d'autrui. C'est assez fascinant... et troublant.

Αργόσυρτο, άνευρο, με σχεδον γραμμικη εξέλιξη, αναμενόμενη έκβαση και χωρίς στόχευση.
Αναρωτιέμαι τι είχε στο μυαλό του να γράψει ο συγγραφέας.
Ίσως κάτι μεταξύ αστυνομικού, κοινωνικού και παράθεσης γνώσεων γλωσσολογίας.
Το ένστικτο έπεσε έξω αυτή τη φορά αν και το διάβασα άνετα. Μάλλον γιατί περίμενα κάπου να γίνει το τρομερό plot twist. Μάταια.

Το βιβλίο γράφτηκε το 1980 και εκδόθηκε στη χώρα μας μόλις στα τέλη του 2016.

Ο Τζερεμυ Κουκ, μια ιδιοφυΐα της Γλωσσολογίας που μελετά τη γλώσσα των νηπιων, καλείται να βρει τον δολοφόνο ενός συναδέλφου του, που βρέθηκε νεκρός στο γραφείο του.

Υπάρχουν άλλες δύο περιπέτειες του γλωσσολόγου φίλου μας, αλλά δε θα τις "απολαύσω" καταπως φαίνεται.

Αυτό το βιβλίο είναι η γνωριμία με τον Τζέρεμυ,έναν διακεκριμένο ψυχογλωσσολόγο που δουλεύει σε ένα Ινστιτούτο όπου μελετάται η γλωσσική ανάπτυξη των νηπίων μέσω της καθημερινής παρατήρησης της ανάπτυξης τους,καταγράφοντας τη χρήση των ήχων και των πρώτων συλλαβών των μωρών και ταυτίζοντάς τες με έννοιες,συναισθήματα κλπ.
Ο Τζέρεμυ,λοιπόν,εκτός από εξαιρετικός επιστήμων,είναι και άνθρωπος με αδυναμίες,με ανασφάλειες,καθώς επίσης πάσχει από τελειομανία και έλλειψη αυτοπεποίθησης.Συνεργάζεται κάτω από φαινομενικά ομαλές συνθήκες με άλλους 5 γνωστούς γλωσσολόγους, και η ζωή κυλάει όμορφα,μέχρι που ανακαλύπτεται το πτώμα του ενός εξ αυτών,καθισμένο στο γραφείο του Τζέρεμυ.Γεγονός που έφερε στο Ινστιτούτο τον υπαστυνόμο Λιφ,έναν τύπο μυστήριο,κυνικό,που ιδρώνει και ξεϊδρώνει και καταφεύγει στη βοήθεια του Κουκ για να βρεθεί ο δολοφόνος.
Στην πράξη,πρόκειται για ένα locked-room mystery,με συγκεκριμένους ύποπτους,οι οποίοι όσο πολλαπλασιάζονται τα θύματα,τόσο παρεκτρέπονται και αρχίζουν τα ευτράπελα.
Μου άρεσε πολύ,το βρήκα πολύ διασκεδαστικό και αρκετά ενδιαφέρον-λεξιλογιακά τουλάχιστον,καθώς η εμμονή των γλωσσολόγων-ηρώων με την αμφισημία και την τονικότητα των λέξεων,έδινε μια ιδιαίτερη χροιά στην ιστορία και οδήγησε και στην λύση του μυστηρίου.Άφθονο υποδόριο χιούμορ,σαρκασμός και υφέρπων κυνισμός για μικρά καθημερινά πραγματάκια εδώ κι εκεί μέσα στο κείμενο,μου χάρισαν πολύ γέλιο,κι ας μην ανήκει στο αγαπημένο μου είδος αστυνομικού.
Στην ψυχογράφηση χαρακτήρων παίρνει άριστα,και ανήκει στα βιβλία που θα ήθελα πραγματικά να το διαβάσω στο πρωτότυπο-η μετάφραση του Κορτώ ήταν δελεαστική,αλλά πολύ θα ήθελα να δω ποιες ήταν οι αντίστοιχες λέξεις στο πρωτότυπο.
4⭐ τελείως υποκειμενικά,απλά και μόνο γιατί τα locked-room mysteries δεν έχουν την δράση και την ένταση που θέλω σε ένα αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα.

My mom gave me this book for Christmas and told me that it was one of my grandma’s favorite books - she loved and devoured mystery novels. Double Negative is a murder mystery with linguistics at the helm - a murder takes place at a daycare / linguistics research center and as we read on more and more is uncovered. I had a lot of fun reading it! Closer to a 3.5 / 3.75.

rather 3.5, but really fun to read

Most readers here seem to believe that this is meant to be a comic novel, which I think is a fundamental misreading. It seems clear to me that Carkeet is presenting us with a case study of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and has given us in Jeremy Cook a protagonist so consumed by his pathology that the reader cannot help but feel for him even as they are repulsed by him:

--He overestimates his own importance (considers himself the "resident genius" of his office, even though in a telling episode late in the book, he is bested by a layman concerning the etymology of the word "Hoosier"; expects the local police to keep him apprised of developments in the murder investigation, even though he is neither law enforcement nor really part of the venerable tradition of amateur detectives in fiction, as he does not attempt to find the murderer, only stumbling across a key piece of evidence very late in the novel)
--He constantly demands excessive praise from those around him (to the extent that, poignantly, all his coworkers have clearly learned to pepper their conversations with him with reassurances, telling them that "of course" he is famous in his field, that he is considered attractive, that everyone respects him immensely)
--This is with good reason, since Cook relentlessly examines the speech of others for anything he can perceive as an insult. When he does believe someone has slighted him, his reactions are excessive (when a colleague includes Cook in a statement that in their office there are "no saints", Cook feels "suddenly depressed"; when he overhears what he believes to be a derogatory comment concerning himself, he excuses himself to have what can only be described as a tantrum in the bathroom, and he devotes most of his energy for the rest of the book to tracing the source of this remark)
--He lacks any empathy for those around him and considers himself superior to them, referring to them as morons, bastards, empty-headed, etc. When he attends the funeral of a colleague, his chief concern even when speaking to the widow of the deceased is whether he appeared ridiculous by arriving late.

That this has isolated Cook from those around him seems undeniable: his closest "friend" is a man who cannot stand him, his romantic relationships are short-lived, and he cannot connect with his fellow human beings. He is essentially a terribly lonely man. When Cook refers to "the heavy weight of misery and turmoil" he has experienced during the events of the novel, he refers not to the murder of a colleague (this does not affect him much), but to the constant hell he experiences as a man whose insatiable need for praise has consumed his life and his sanity. Though many people can testify to the unpleasantness of knowing or being in a relationship with a person with NPD, Carkeet reminds us that for the afflicted, the experience is much, much worse.

This book was engaging and entertaining. I enjoyed Jeremy's humorous depictions of his co-workers.

As a mystery novel, I think it leaves something to be asked for. I was hoping for more clues along the way and feel like it did more of a big resolve at the end. Indeed, I did not see the suspect coming but I think a lot more could be added with Stiph's notes and connections with clues.

Also, I was not a fan of how Paula suddenly falls head over heels for Jeremy in the end. How did he get there?

This was a light and enjoyable mystery novel that plays with linguistics as its backdrop. I am glad I read it but I probably won't recommend it to anyone.

Now I’ve read both mystery novels by the novelist David Carkeet, From Away, his latest novel from 2010, and Double Negative, his first novel from 1980. Double Negative introduces the character of Jeremy Cook, a psycholinguistic researcher, who is also the subject of two subsequent Carkeet novels, which are not mysteries.

Double Negative is undoubtedly the finest mystery novel ever written about the academic field of psycholinguistics! It takes place at an academic institute that has a childcare center attached, where the researchers get to observe the development of language structures in small children. When two people, a psycholinguist and a visiting reporter, die under mysterious circumstances, prompting concerned parents to withdraw their children from the Center, Jeremy Cook resolves to uncover the perpetrator, whom he suspects is one of his colleagues.

I don’t think that the late Donald Westlake has a lot to worry about in terms of competition, but this is a somewhat humorous tale that is both quirky and original. It is a realistic sendup of the grim office politics one encounters in academic research settings. Moreover, the ins and outs of psycholinguistics are conveyed in a fun way. In addition to the academic machinations, other major drivers of the plot include Jeremy’s insecurities as he tries to get something going with a young researcher named Paula and Cook's efforts to discern the network of dyadic affinities and hostilities among him and his peers, which may provide clues regarding the identity of the perpetrator.

I think that From Away, Carkeet’s most recent novel, is a livelier read than Double Negative, his first one from three decades earlier. Neither novel is all that well wrought as a mystery story (in Double Negative, the discovery of the identity of the killer comes across more as a necessary ending to the story than as a revelation). Nonetheless, like From Away, Double Negative offers a quirky view of human behavior within an intriguing and vividly depicted social milieu.

Clever, if a bit obtuse, murder mystery at a bizarre school in Indiana that studies vocal patterns of young children. The linguistics backgrounds of the main suspects--including the book's protagonist, Jeremy Cook--is entertaining and, ultimately, connected to the solution of the mystery. Cook is handsome, smart and likable, yet spends almost the entire novel fretting over who likes him, who doesn't, and why. This also turns out to be an obsession of the murder victim. In the end, all the characters--funny and kooky as they often are, especially the weird police detective--are just a little too unbelievable as people, which dampens the novel's overall effect.

I had to chuckle at how the protagonist "cracked" the case -- it is indeed novel if a little ethically unsettling -- but motive?? How can you write a mystery story and never bother to explain the motives of the murderer? Too farcical and too lost in linguistic wordplay that it got precious and forgot to be a mystery.

This was AWESOME. It's a murder mystery set at a think tank of linguists. There's lots of inter-office politics and backstabbing (not literally, in this case), and the main character is sort-of-maybe (you're not quite sure, really) an unreliable narrator. Hilarious too. Great fun.

I adore any academic who-dun-it, and this is one. In addition, this one is totally thought-provoking and mystifying--even for a mystery writer. I know people just like these characters--some I miss and some I don't, but that's what makes this such a delightful book to read.

Has there ever before been a murder mystery that takes place in a linguistics lab that studies toddlers and their language acquisition with imaginary words? Has there ever been an odder field of potential suspects? Has there ever been such a clever puzzle? Or solution? Or is there any surprise that language should be at the heart of the story?

The Wabash Institute has dedicated itself to the development of verbal skills by very young children. Yet the place is a hotbed of academic rivalries, poor communication, quibbles about everyday language and rampant suspicion. When the body of one of the older researchers is found in someone else's office, the detective, Lieutenant Leaf, is quite certain that it is murder.

Cook cleared his throat. "You think someone killed him then?"

Leaf smiled. "My preliminary examination showed that the man received a blow to the back of the head so severe that it could have been self-inflicted only if he (a) dropped from a great height and landed only on his head, or (b) ran backward into a wall at a speed of about twenty miles per hour."

"Both rather unlikely, given his presence in my office," said Cook, wanting to contribute.

"Right," said Leaf, smiling slightly. "Right."

Poking fun at academia, author David Carkeet is himself a professor of linguistics and has crafted what one reviewer called an ingenious mystery. "Mystery stories that have a really original solution to the crime are very rare but Dr. Carkeet has found one." (246 p.)

Ich habe "Minus mal Minus" von David Carkeet geradezu verschlungen und frage mich ernsthaft, warum ich dieses Juwel nicht schon viel früher entdeckt habe! Was für eine herrliche Satire auf den akademischen Zirkus, verpackt in einen cleveren Kriminalfall. Ich habe selten so treffsichere und witzige Beobachtungen über das Leben an einer Universität gelesen. Die Charaktere sind ein Panoptikum liebenswerter Exzentriker und die Dialoge so pointiert, dass ich mehrfach laut lachen musste.

Aber das absolut Geniale an diesem Buch ist, wie der Kriminalfall durch Linguistik gelöst wird. Es ist nicht einfach nur ein Krimi, der im Uni-Milieu spielt – die Sprachwissenschaft selbst ist hier das Werkzeug des Ermittlers! Wie der Protagonist Jeremy Cook eine Notiz auf ihre syntaktische Struktur und Wortwahl analysiert, um dem Mörder auf die Spur zu kommen, ist einfach brillant und etwas, das ich so noch nie gelesen habe.

Für mich ist "Minus mal Minus" die perfekte Mischung aus einem intelligenten Krimi, einer messerscharfen Satire und einer wunderbaren Liebeserklärung an die Sprache. Intelligente Unterhaltung vom Allerfeinsten und eine uneingeschränkte Leseempfehlung für jeden, der Krimis mit Grips und Humor liebt

Alright, so I definitely was not feeling this book until about half-way through. I picked it up because I'm a linguistics major, and a mystery novel about linguistics sounded funny.

But I really couldn't get into Jeremy Cook's character until I belatedly realized that's the point. He does suck, on purpose! After that, I was just amused at his interactions with the rest of the cast. I was high-key rooting for him to stop sucking. Character growth!

As for the mystery itself, it was alright. It felt a little backgrounded due to Cook's self-absorbedness - which is, again, probably the point. There's probably not enough meat there for true mystery novel enjoyers, but for me, it was fine, I guess.

I very much enjoyed the linguistic elements throughout the book. I won't spoil it, but it's always fun when a random linguistic feature cracks a case.

Overall, a perfectly fine book to read at work. I probably wouldn't recommend if you don't have a background in linguistics, though, because that's where I got a good portion of my enjoyment.

Thoroughly enjoyed this linguistic mystery and a must read for anyone interested in language. A mystery solved with a baby's quirk of language acquisition, easily recognized and interpreted by those amazing scientists of mind and glottal stops. Enjoyed the inside jokes about double modals and the excursions into relationships, also thoroughly analyzed and interpreted. And I recognize so well those sudden, unexpected moments of introspection as a phenomenon is discovered and turned over with delight and insight. The plot is fairly intricate, but characterization is clumsy as is dialogue, when turned to ideas other than language.

The Felony & Mayhem book is pleasant to hold and easy to read. The publishers always do a good job.

Set in a Midwestern college, this mystery rather eerily reflects on actual closures of academic primate ASL labs as their residents age out. But here, the school more wisely combined a research facility that observed chimp language acquisition with the campus childcare facility and changed focus to how children acquire language. Rather than a batch of psychologists though, as is common in these academic labs, here we have linguists who don't get along. One is studying new words created by children and particularly a word that turns out to be important to solving the crime, although the protagonist seems unaware throughout the book that he is the police's major suspect.

Very funny novel that skewers the idiocy of academics in a thankfully fictional linguistics center called the Wabash Institute that is more day care center than research lab. Published in 1980, the novel is a little dated, but David Carkeet's rare and appealing sense of humor withstands the test of time.

A murder mystery mixed with a group of linguists (who don't particularly like each other) and an early childhood research center (let's study language acquisition!) and an author who used to live in St. Louis (so there is a bit of that humor to it). Definitely a fun winter read.

Un agréable Polar humoristique. Bon c'est plus une lecture légère que vraiment drôle et ce n'est pas encore cette fois que je me suis bidonné, mais j'ai passé un bon moment.
En plus ça se passe dans l'Indiana, là un j'ai passé un an comme élève d'échange et certaines remarques de l'auteur sur les habitants m'ont parût étrangement pertinentes.

2 1/2 stars. Sometimes funny, sometimes horrifying, and sometimes rambling, it doesn't take the academic and research world to seriously but is a satisfying puzzle. The clueless hero may endear himself to you or just annoy you, or maybe both during the course of the book--he did me. In the end, it was definitely more positive than negative as it picked up as the book moved along.
