J. Kahele’s at it again with this literary rollercoaster that elicits a mixed bag of emotions. Pierson (The Meager Boys Story Book 1) is a smorgasbord of beautiful places and beautiful people: a staple of Kahele’s work. Another staple is her elegant prose punctuated by great imagery and vivid descriptions that flow from page to page. Pierson, our dashing protagonist, is one of four brothers whose first names all start with the letter P. I thought that was pretty sweet. He agrees to an arrangement with the lovely Susan for their mutual benefit and nothing remotely romantic. When sparks begin to fly all bets are off, and we’re off to the races.

Kahele does a good job of weaving subplots throughout the narrative, keeping the tension at a fever pitch, and at the same time the reader in suspense. To put the proverbial icing on the cake, Kahele gives the reader some unexpected twists and turns including a wicked reveal toward the end. Wait for it. An easy high five for Pierson.

Is it possible to have a love/hate/love relationship with a character? Definitely, especially when J. Kahele is the driving force behind the creation of PIERSON, a man who took on too much, too young and forgot to actually live his own life or forget the grief of the past.

Little did Pierson Meager know his life was about to get very real and very intense when he meets Susan Coyle in a case of mistaken identity. Let’s just say Susan is about to snag the promotion of a lifetime, except her boss has a rather “unenlightened” view of singles and although Susan is deserving of the position, she is NOT married. Desperate, she hires an escort to portray her fiancé for dinner with the boss and his wife and naturally she has never seen the guy so mistakes the wealthy Pierson for her mystery man. Caught in a roguish mood, he doesn’t say a thing, but goes along for the carnival ride that this dinner will become! And as they say….the rest is history, humor, happiness, heartbreak and heat!

Susan is trying to make a new life, driven to succeed and desperate to forget the darkness of the past. When she learns that Pierson may not be her escort, but has an agenda of his own, they strike a deal to help each other out in the “fake romance” arena…yep, two adults, one faking it for a job, one faking it for his mother. Absolutely. Priceless.

J. Kahele has gone to new heights of literary greatness and originality as two people discover that Fate has its own little game to play and it concerns their pasts, their present and most likely their future! Are you looking for some romantic comedy in a heartfelt tale of two lost souls finding each other? Do you mind shedding a few tears for various reasons? Do you love when hearts are given the chance to heal? How about supporting characters that you just want to hug? It’s all right here in J. Kahele’s fabulous start to a new series, The Meager Boys.

One thing I learned while reading PIERSON, you never know where a lie will take you and NEVER mess with Fate where hearts are concerned!

I received an ARC edition from J. Kahele in exchange for my honest review.

I'm going to say this right from the start......PIERSON blew me away! I read this story in one sitting, putting my life on hold while I devoured this heart tugging story! I've always loved Janelle's stories, but this one broke my heart! PIERSON is the best book by her so far and if you've read my past reviews of her books you know how much I loved them.

Susan Coyle ran away from Arizona and her past life there. Her mother is a drunk, her father left them when they needed him the most and Susan had to step up and take care of her little sister. She is about to be promoted to a great job of Marketing CEO. The only thing holding her up is that she is unattached. No boyfriend or fiancé and that is one of the requirements for her getting this position. She comes up with a plan and her friend Lilly sets her up with a guy she knows to pretend to be Susan's fiancé. When she gets to the meeting place she thinks the man she is talking to is her fake fiancé but it isn't. It's Pierson Meager! Her life is going to change from this moment on, but she just doesn't know it yet!

As it turns out, PIERSON knows her boss very well and the meeting is quite uncomfortable for Susan. Pierson never gives her secret away, but he uses it for his own benefit too. His mother has been harping on him to settle down and he creates a fake girlfriend. He brings Susan home to meet his family and they love her and she loves them instantly. Over time secrets come to light and your heart is going to break with each of them.

PIERSON broke my heart over and over again. I was holding my breath with every page as I fell in love with all the beautiful characters, not just Pierson and Susan but all the secondary characters as well. PIERSON is filled with forgiveness, sexual tension, lots of tender moments, and many pages that will have you holding your breath waiting for the other shoe to fall. My emotions were on a roller coaster ride with each and every chapter and I can not wait to continue this wonderful series. Janelle Kahele, you have done it again! You broke my heart, ripped it out, stomped all over it, and then gave it back to me! Well done!!

I dabble in romance novels now and again so it's not my normal place of comfort unless it's got a dark side to it (I'm weird I know!). I absolutely adored the Mine series by J. Kahele which tackles domestic violence in a harrowing way but also new beginnings and healing hearts. I was sucked right in.

I admire this author enormously, she writes with a passion for words and I know she wants her readers to feel like her characters are people you know so well. That's something that is a theme through many books. In this new book some familiar faces popped up from previous novels much to my surprise and delight! It doesn't matter if you've not read prior books to enjoy this one however. Not one bit!

I found this a light read - this is not my genre so I'm never going to love it to bits but I know others will. I've got many friends, reviewers and bloggers who love to escape into a romance!

The characters are real and flawed in this book, sometimes shockingly so. One aspect of the book I did find hard to digest is the behaviour, comments and the way a lot of the male characters treat women - whether it's their wife, girlfriend or in this case their brother's new love interest. I find a lot of exchanges very belittling, rude and sexist. What I'm unsure of is if these were deliberate character attributes? Regardless I don't like it and perhaps don't expect it in a contemporary romance novel.

I would expect it in dark romance, but that genre is totally different. It's a genre built around often very bad treatment of a woman or women.

Asides from those bits that made me grit my teeth and want to slap a few men in the book I read it really quickly. I just don't think this style of romance is my cup of tea. But it sure is for millions. My review therefore is quite subjective, having great respect for the author as a person it's not easy to write this.

My downfall is not having a lot to compare to either, not being an avid romance reader. Others would be better placed to review and compare. I see from many reviews the book has been loved by many.

3 stars from me. If the hard to swallow awful behaviour and manners of the many males in the book was less demeaning this would be a 3.5 star book for me. I'm still unclear if they were meant to be like that? As that changes how you take characters huh?

I'm keen to try some of J. Kahele's non-romance books she has written. Possibly more up my alley. I did so love the Mine series. Couldn't put them down and you could say they fall into that darker romance category I love. If romance is your thing I suggest ignoring my review and reading others and giving this book a whirl yourself!

Pierson is arguably J Kahele's best written novel to date. The lives, loves and lows of Pierson unfold in her latest adult romance. What's especially pleasing to see here is a strong focus on story, not sensationalism. The cool erotic scenes are there aplenty, but it's arguable that the titular Pierson and 'woman of interest' Susan are the most rounded out characters here.

The dynamic between Pierson and his brothers is well done and anyone who has a brother (or is a brother) will understand how that relationship works. Again, Paxton, Phoenix and Preston all have their own ways about them, but Pierson is by far the most interesting.

Another huge step in the author's mature storytelling is in the relationship between Pierson and Susan. She is no weak willed woman, but neither is she an over the top facsimilie of annoying feminist heroines. Susan actually feels real...like the kind of woman anyone could walk into but rarely do in real life.

I also liked the reintroduction of character's from the author's other stories, including some self-deprecating humour when talking about a character (Chain) 's name.

"Chain? What kind of name is that? What's next? Link?"

Loved that, along with the insightful thoughts on why Blu (another character) swears so much. Fans of Miss Kahele's works can have a lot of fun joining up the dots.

As to the primary story, wow - few writers can write with such authority on mature relationships. That's why I hope some male readers will take a punt and have a go at Pierson. It's important to behave like a gentleman in a relationship, guys. It's good to let the woman of your dreams really be the woman of your realities. Love is never boring, weak, or for the faint hearted, and in this electrifying tale in an all-new series, we get it all. Boy, do we.

Pierson is a great story. I love J. Kahele's characters, chain, Violet, blu and those twins. This book took humor to a different level. I appreciated the wit and the just plain funny points in this romantic story. I liked the way that Pierson and Susan met and I liked their chemistry. They were working together for their own reasons and the story as it unfolded was just wonderfully told.

I loved seeing the reappearance of some of my most favorite people. It made me one happy reader. I really loved the heart of Pierson, he was not the typical man and I appreciated that so much.

Another great book in the arsenal of J. Kahele. This is the perfect book to read to see why I look so forward to one of her books being released. She brings her characters to life in the most pleasant way.

it was pretty good, I did find it alike to my own relationship. Pierson was an interesting character allright, I think I found an alike soul to mine in him and Susan was so like my boyfriend in some things too jajaja it was cool.

hope to see more of Lilly she was awesome and the plot was pretty sad at parts since it took over themes like depression and other things too, but really liked it.

J. Kahele continues to evolve with her novels. Pierson has numerous components that help to make it a strong story. It has humor, sensual scenes, drama, and tackles serious topics such as depression and others. The chemistry between the main characters Pierson and Susan is incredible. The story has wit and the dialogue helps to keep the reader engaged throughout. Like a fine wine, J. Kahele only gets better with time! Keep the hits coming!

Well, I sure wasn't expecting the twist at the end!! 😳

I really enjoyed this book. It was highly entertaining and fast read (as always with J. Kahele) all the while treating some heavy themes.

This was not bad per se. It was a really fast read. The first 50% was actually promising. I liked the heroine. She was not a door mat. The hero was very interesting, especially when it came to relating with his brothers.

The remaining half of the book was ... mediocre. I just seemed staged. Insert defending heroine's honor, insert dramatic breakup that will have you rolling your eyes... etc

The twist, I didn't see coming but I still wasn't moved. I guess because I could not connect to the characters anymore, not like the beginning.

I do not intend to continue the series.
