In this exciting second book of the Shiva XIV series, Ayn finds himself living a new life as he struggles with whether he is truly a God reborn or if he is a mere mortal.
Meanwhile, Yol Notama, the magnanimous leader of the Tah rebellion, hatches his epic plans on Deius as Reese and Pei lurk in the shadows as Lirhan spies.
The stakes are high, and the battle for survival has only just begun!

Months ago, I had completed reading the first book of this series. I didn't know what to expect, but since the beginning, I knew that something magical was happening, I fell in love with each of the characters, and I couldn't see the time to start reading the book two. With this second book, I fell in love with the opposite personalities of Ayn and Zin, as the story assumes darker tones, gets into more serious issues and gives you something to think about. It is a story that will stay with you even when you are far from the book. I have to admit that I was also dreaming about it, and this is the first time that a book gets into my mind so deeply as "The Veil of truth" did. The two main characters will meet new friends to trust and new enemies to fear, meanwhile also battling their internal conflicts. It is a highly recommended read that will keep you awake at night wanting to see "what's happening next?" I cannot wait to read the next one, which is waiting its turn on my kindle.
This epic space opera series is absolutely brilliant.
When I wrote my review of the first book in the Shiva XIV series, I said that 'Shiva XIV' could easily become the next space epic series, and that it would easily fill the void that Star Wars fans would experience after the final episode.
Having just finished 'The Veil of Truth’, the second book in the series, I stand wholeheartedly by those words. This epic space opera series really is a gift that keeps on giving.
Following directly from the action and story of of 'Shiva XIV’, this book is once again woven from highly original and engaging stories in which the characters find themselves in a web of conflicted love, loyalties and ambitions that develop and unfold as the they pursue justice and discover truths about themselves that are not always either welcome or pleasant.
Shanti’s magic envelopes the reader, not just in the magical realism that is blended so beautifully with the sci-fi elements of this book, but also in her writing itself. The reader is swept along, easily visualising the worlds and characters that are central to the story. The worlds are intricate and complex, each with individual qualities that make it unique from the others. Shanti then plays these worlds off against one another, adding to the personal stories of the characters so that the reader truly understands that there is much more at stake than the fates of individuals.
Shanti really is a very gifted storyteller who takes the reader on a new and often surprising journey. The plot lines are well developed and strong, woven so skilfully together that the reader doesn’t always realise how intricately and significantly the characters’ stories contribute to one another.
The book ends not with a cliffhanger as the first did, but rather with a surprise and a very strong sense that there is more to learn and discover before the story can really end. I’m very much looking forward to reading book 3, ‘The Riddle of the Gods’, and continuing this fantastic journey.
The second installment of the Shiva XIV series does not disappoint. We get to know the main characters as they continue on their journeys and meet many new and interesting ones along the way. Ahn and Zin are restored to health by Dr Hessen who knows exactly who they are and wants to help them remain hidden. There is an ongoing search for the two and they seem to be in a safe place for the time being. The doctor’s beautiful daughter is also in residence and both of the young men fall under her spell. Meanwhile, Reese is using a strong and dangerous spell to alter her appearance so she can spy for King Atlar. She is afraid that her brother will see through the disguise and asks for help from King Atlar who sends the priest turned warrior, Pei, to help. The action is non-stop with so many twists and turns that I found it impossible to figure out where we were headed and who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. Great storytelling from the great creative mind of Shanti. All the characters are well rounded, with plenty of depth. I love the sweet, sensitive Ayn, the wild, adventurous Zin, but most of all the quiet, unassuming, Pei. I can’t help but feel that he is coming into his own soon and can’t wait to see what happens. Highly recommended for anyone who likes Science Fiction, Science Fantasy, Fantasy.
Another brilliantly written book. I loved this book as much as the first if not more. Ayn finds himself struggling with who he his and where his path will lead. Separated from his tutor and following a path with a twisting and intriguing journey with danger and new characters. What is not to like? I am looking forward to book 3 and to see where the journey will lead. More of the story is revelled which drew me in more. The world the author as created is truly amazing and believable the characters are all unique and different. An amazing story throughout.
The Veil of Truth by Lyra Shanti continues with Yol Notama growing more and more power over the planet Deius. While Ayn, Zin, Srah and Axis deal with slavery and priests become warriors, Ms. Shanti delivers another excellent installment in her series.
The Veil of Truth is without a doubt everything the middle of a story should be. The tension mounts and the fate of the Un becomes more uncertain.
The Shiva XIV series is an adventure not to be missed.
At the end of Shiva XIV I was anxious to read the book 2, Shiva XIV: The Veil of Truth (2015). I knew there was a lot more story to tell, and I was invested in the characters.
The second book continues immediately where the first book ended. There are interesting new characters in The Veil of Truth, like Srah, who has lovely wings. I love characters with wings. There are a few of them in the series.
Shanti's creativity spiked to the top of the charts with this book, showing us more parts of the world she built and more characters with interesting motives and twisty plots. Some of them are twisted, too.
I was so engrossed in The Veil of Truth that I didn't realize I was close to the end and then, bam, it was over. I love to be swept away by a series like that!
From the very start of this highly imaginative and captivating novel series, Author Lyra Shanti grabs the reader's interest, taking us on an epic journey through space - and sometimes time - that leads one to the Un galaxy where the denizens of various worlds fight for power, freedom, and justice. As we pick up the story in book two, Ayn - the namesake and main character of the Shiva XIV novel series - is in hiding. A young man now, he has yet to accept who he is, and he is nowhere near fulfilling his destiny to become the Bodanya - the long-awaited messiah and intended leader of the Un galaxy. In the meantime, leaders and want-to-be leaders based on other worlds are planning and plotting to assume the presumably dead Bodanya's throne, while other, less fortunate citizens of the galaxy eke out a means to survive the new trials and tribulations they must bear as a result of the supposedly successful assassination of Ayn and the ruling hierarchy on his home planet, Deius.
As Shanti guides us through this elaborate tale, one is oftentimes taken by surprise at the twists and turns of this epic page-turner that is filled with thrills and chills enough to affect even the most mundane and skeptical reader. Just when one believes they have the plot of Shiva XIV figured out, and senses the direction in which the story is headed, Shanti expertly shifts direction or diverts one's attention by introducing a new catalyst that elicits doubt about whether any or all of her brilliant cast of main and secondary characters will still be standing by the end of the novel. As the reader is swept up in the individual fates and fortunes of Shanti's main characters, the intricacy of their lives and back-stories weave together seamlessly, propelling the story forward against a complex, multi-cultural union of nations seeking to realize their individual destinies in a galaxy torn apart by a despicable act of terrorism that may lead to an all out war of the worlds.
This author is an expert at world building and character development, and she has us fully convinced that the people we encounter in her novels are real and the events that take place in this galaxy far, far away will have a huge impact on the fate of the entire universe. Her level of writing - as I stated in my book review for Shiva XIV (Book 1) - is on par with such Sci-Fi luminaries as George Lucas, Frank Hebert, and Ray Bradbury. Where most Sci-Fi sagas are barely believable, the intensity and vibrancy of Shanti's characters, cultures, religions, and politics ensure this author's work will not only be most memorable but absolutely unforgettable. I highly recommend the entire Shiva XIV novel series. And now, you must excuse me as I abandon you here and head off to read Shiva XIV (Book 3) - The Riddle of the Gods, for I cannot wait a moment longer and risk delaying this incomparable journey through the Un galaxy!
Fascinating shifts in character pairings (from book one into book two) lead to complex deep interaction between characters. This adults only space opera gets darker in its second story. We face tough issues like enslavement, coping with parental abuse, infidelity, and betrayal. Characters are forced to reevaluate what they thought of people who they once admired. Have I scared off all the young’ins? Aha! If you’re still reading this, there are chores! There.
For the price the omniscient third person point of view paid, Shanti capitalized on being everywhere to highlight a theme that haunts our modern world. Terrorism. We can’t look at people who commit unspeakable acts of violence as human in the real world. They are despicable monsters for hurting others, regardless of their cause. However this idea is safe to explore in someone else’s galaxy and we the Tah as both evil terrorists and freedom fighting idealists. Not many people think they are the bad guys, that’s why we love cartoon super-villians though. Embrace your inner dirt bag, if that’s who you are! Love yourself first, Cobra Commander, if you want anyone else to love you. Axis is cool. There is a whole bunch more with him and info about he Sarax species in general. I want one. I told Jenny and the boys, “no more pets.” But if you ask me if someone talks and does toilet someplace that you don’t have to deal with, they are a person. No offence to people with trouble doing toilet unaided was intended.
I was given a free review copy at my request and have voluntarily left a review. Any review. That fact that it’s a good one is because the book is good. Which has nothing to do with how awesome I am. You’ll have to find that out for yourself at LARC-SciFi(dot)com.
So if you like the any of the following, you should give this series a try: Voltron Lionforce (from the 80s, can’t vouch for the cgi one), LGBT themes and relationships, space operas, interesting world building focused on politics and religion, reincarnation, deep character development, the love scenes and pace of a young adult novel, the bedroom stuff from an adult only novel (not erotica, you!), talking animals with magic powers, innocent protagonists, and SHOCKING ENDINGS! OMG I was blown away by the last paragraph reveal…
If you're a fan of expansive space operas filled with rich world-building and complex characters, The Veil of Truth is a must-read. As the second installment in the Shiva XIV series, this book picks up with Ayn grappling with his identity—torn between being a god reborn or just a regular guy. Meanwhile, the power dynamics on Deius are shifting, with Yol Notama's influence growing and new threats emerging.
Lyra Shanti does a fantastic job of deepening the story introduced in the first book. The plot is intricate, weaving together multiple storylines that keep you hooked from start to finish. The characters are well-developed, each facing their own struggles and growth, making them relatable and engaging.
What stands out is Shanti's ability to create a vivid and immersive universe. The descriptions are so detailed that you can easily visualize the diverse planets, cultures, and technologies. The pacing is well-balanced, with a mix of action, political intrigue, and personal moments that give depth to the narrative.
If you enjoyed Shiva XIV, you'll love The Veil of Truth. It's a compelling continuation that sets the stage for even more exciting developments in the series. Highly recommend for science fiction and fantasy enthusiasts looking for a fresh and imaginative series.
What a fascinating, world-building novel series this has turned out to be!
The first book, while a greatly entertaining read as well, sets up The Un galaxy (Planets Deius, Kri, Xen, and Ohr) with characters whose story lines weave together and apart during the interrupted coronation of Ayn, The Shiva of Deius. The Second book brilliantly breaks us further into the Un with daring, unexpected journeys. All is uncertain on Ayn's path as he struggles with who he is, where is he going, and, frankly, is he going insane? His tutor Pei, now separated from Ayn, also finds himself redefined in a path of intrigue and danger trying to infiltrate the revolutionary leader of The Tah, Yol Notama. The veil is lifted as we start to understand much more about The Dei and why some of the people of Deius follow Notama and his general Astire.
Readers will encounter new faces, both villainous and friendly; witness new romance in exotic locales; and find themselves cheering on their favorite characters. I certainly did for more than a few characters myself. I can imagine the third will be just as, if not more amazing!
