Frances had gone to try to finish a book, and she hoped to enlist the help of Conde Romanes de los Nomades y Aguila. But he, it soon turned out, required something in return from her: he needed an heir, and therefore a wife. But her new husband had no love to give her at all.
“What scandalous thoughts seethe behind your manner of prim decorum — a fine, sleek pelt denotes the hunting prowess of a well-fed beast, is that what you are thinking, seňorita?” His jeering laughter scraped a permanent scar across her youthful sensitivity. “Put your mind at rest, tonight the beast does not prowl, his mind is too set upon affairs of family to spare time for thoughts of ravishment!”
Oh bother.
If it wasn't bad enough to slowly wade in this muckpond of a story, where nothing makes sense, characters and their motivations are completely inconsistent, and the author threw everything but the kitchen thing (Gypsies! Bird extinction! Bullfights! Harems! Homicide! Environmentalism!), I also had to contend with this pompous, inflated prose :(
But just when I thought it couldn't get worse, this gem:
“What happened?” She frowned, attempting to recall some horror that her memory seemed reluctant to resurrect. “Oh, now I remember!” She caught an agonised breath. “I began feeling unwell… Maria offered to drive me to her home…” Then terror flooded back, swirling horrified disbelief into wide grey eyes. “Rom,” she levered herself upright, “Maria tried to kill me!”
Gently he pressed her back against the pillows. “Try not to judge her too harshly, chica,” he pleaded, deeply serious.
WHAT?????!!!!! Try not to judge her harshly.........for trying to KILL you???!!!
I feel women should go back and read these old romances. Doing so will prove that we have come a long, long way. You'll see what I mean. Just pick up any of these oldies from the early 80s.
Frances is meek, virginal, and bewildered. She is sure to bring a fresh skirt and her manicure set on the excursion into the woods on horseback. Her captor is The Lord of the Land. No one dare question him, including Frances. Ugh.
Much has changed in the last thirty years. Thank goodness.
This book has lot of insight to the Spanish gypsy lifestyle, their rituals, their vibrant cultural hues and sombre mannerism. It actually deals with the heroine wanting to save his late scientist father's efforts of saving precious birds from extinction. Here, it is the 'imperial eagle' which 'La Conde', the imperious arrogant Lord of the Land, was so particular to preserve. Throw in some spice of Spanish history, the Indian influence on the gypsies, the Moorish architecture and top it with a dull romance and you have the book! Nothing stormy happens much between the two though.

My copy of this book must have been missing several chapters. The FMC went from disgust when the MMC put in an Oscar-worthy performance of being besotted with her in order to spite the OW, to anger when he invades her bedroom to announce their impending nuptials, to starry-eyed adoration at the wedding in the very next chapter. When did she fall for him? (And more importantly, why?) This pair is dreadfully mismatched and there is nothing to convince you of when, why or how either (but especially the MMC) was concussed by the Skillet of Love. Given that this is supposedly a romance novel, the romance and chemistry were non-existent. (And don’t get me started on the ridiculous dialogue…)
I honestly don't know what the other readers saw in this novel. It's so BORING and totally UNINTERESTING. It gave me a headache and so I skimmed! To the ending! And even that was a total disappointment. :(
