We hoped, desperately, that they came in peace. We were wrong. Thirty years after the Second Swarm War devastated Earth and its colonies, a powerful, mysterious alien ship has invaded our space. Entire planets are ravaged, whole moons shattered. Any starship sent against it never comes home. But Admiral Proctor, a war hero from our last brush with annihilation, is called out of retirement to take the reins of humanity's newest starship. The ISS Independence and her crew, with Admiral Proctor at the helm, will stand as Earth's last defense. Somehow, against all odds, they will save us, even when our enemy is not just an unstoppable alien ship, but a ghost from humanity's past bent on its utter destruction. And if they fail, we fall. For good.
Nick became a scientist so that he could build starships. Unfortunately, his ship is taking longer to build than he'd hoped, so fictional starships will have to do for now. When he's not adding to his starship collection, you can find him tweeting and facebooking about Nasa, science, space, SciFi, and quoting Star Trek II.
He lives in Alabama with his wife, 2 kids, and 3 motorcycles.

We’re back with Shelby Proctor, or Professor Shelby Proctor which was something she was never called back in the old days. We once knew her as Commader Shelby Proctor, the highly skilled scientist that helped Captain Tim Granger defeat the Swarm. As it turned out, Admiral Proctor actually went on to kill the last of the Swarm carriers which ended their presence in our galaxy. Captain Granger, meanwhile, drove his ship the ISS Victory into a black hole that closed the access to our galaxy for the rest of the Swarm. It takes a very long time for a ship to pass through a black hole. Even now, thirty years later, Captain Granger’s ship is just approaching the event horizon and being stretched beyond any reasonable means of surviving this journey.
During that thirty years after the Swarm defeat, Admiral Proctor became Fleet Admiral Proctor, defender of Earth and all humanity. She managed to convince all the other human civilizations that war among themselves was stupid and she also convinced the known alien races found during the Swarm wars, that attacking Earth or humanity was not going to be worthwhile. So as peace settled over the galaxy, Shelby Proctor retired from the Fleet and now teaches at small University, in Whitehaven, Britannia. She is sixty-eight years old.
Then, as it never happens to anyone in this world, she gets a visit by none other than the current Fleet Admiral, Admiral Oppenheimer. He tells her that there is a new threat in the galaxy and he doesn’t know how to stop it. So, he asks Professor Proctor if she would mind coming back into the IDF and checking out this threat in a way that would make it go away! And now the fun starts. This new threat seems to be one single ship. A previous IDF ship was sent to investigate what it was doing and, well, it didn’t go too well. So now it’s up to Admiral Shelby Proctor to save the day, again!
The book was very good. It had many exciting parts, but also some very dull periods where everyone just thought about what was and wasn’t happening. They theorized how to overcome this new enemy while Admiral Proctor went in search of her Nephew. Sounds kind of strange for her to do this during a galactic emergency, but she did. Also, it doesn’t appear that the IDF (International Defense Forces) have really advanced much in thirty years. While her new ship seems to be capable, it just doesn’t cut the mustard so to speak. Oh, yeah, her brand new ship is the ISS Independence.
So we get another three book series with some continuity in that Shelby Proctor and a few other characters carry over from the Tim Granger books. There’s a lot spoken about Captain Timothy Granger. Seems there’s a faction of humanity that’s made him into some kind of deity. Yeah, they have a church, pastors and all the other things you’d expect, even starry-eyed devotees that even thing Shelby Proctor is some kind of Saint. You’ll be interested to hear her thoughts on this new Grangerite religion.
I think I’ll be reading the next book. I didn’t get the kind of ultimate doom from this one as I did in the past. While this new threat seems dangerous, it doesn’t seem to last much. More is coming. At least that’s what Captain Timothy Granger tries to tell Admiral Proctor!
Well, at least there's a bit less snorting this time around. But every character keeps saying "dammit" in response to specific scenarios to the point where they all sorta sound like the same person. And oof, I feel like there's an onslaught of more typos this time around, for some reason. Okay, maybe not an ONSLAUGHT, but...they sure were peppered throughout. It's not like as annoying as like, say, a fly buzzing around you. More like a little gnat. Just sorta...makes itself known every now and then, but it doesn't piss you off too much. Maybe I just didn't notice them in the past books, but for some reason they really stood out to me here. Can't have it all I guess.
This was a better read than its predecessor, Victory. Nice improvement as I really did not enjoy Victory. But, this is still kinda on the meh side. Not horribly meh, but....eh. It feels like I'm being hella picky here, but it is what it is. I didn't care for the time jump. Yes, there's a time-jump. Like 30+ years of a time-jump between this book and the last. And it feels like such a cop-out. Sometimes time-jumps work and serve a purpose. This time? No. It just stripped me from truly getting to know characters that I may have wanted to know more about. I wanted to see them post-battle. I want to see them go back to a bit of their lives so I can be more invested in them. But now there's a whole vast history of important character interactions and moments and developments that have been completely thrown in the background. Not even just simple background, but PAST background in a world I wasn't invited to.
Anyway, onward and upward. The story continues on with its time-jump. And though I wasn't fond of the time-jump, it still brought on new characters that I took a liking to. The story isn't less complicated than the others and does have a lot more going on, much of it not ALWAYS taking place in huge space-battles. Now some of the drama is a bit more grounded and "old-fashioned," with mysterious villains that may or may not be alien. I like those action moments and many of the newest character interactions. And, dare I say? Can there actually FINALLY be a love story brewing? Something ELSE laced in a bit in the middle of all the politics and space-battles? As soon as I saw inklings of it when two new characters got to meeting, I got a little more happy in trying to think, "Ya know, I like these two." So...what happens? Was I pleased? Guess you'll have to read the book to find out, or the spoiler at the bottom. At any rate, there are a lot of fun character interactions here, lots of back-and-forth dialogue and banter that I'm a fan of, which is where the extra star comes from. I do absolutely loved the way this book ended though. A perfect set-up for the next one. Hopefully. As long as there won't be another insane time-jump though. Pick it up where it left off, dammit! (as all the characters say lol)
SPOILER SPOILER! No! Right when things got interesting with two characters, they go and KILL one of them off. I was quite miffed. Peeved. Disappointed.
Having read the other 3 books I was familiar with some of the characters but I would have been at a total loss if I had not. The book was very slow to start but by persevering I start to get interested and by the end of the book I was glad that I did. I have downloaded the next book already and hopefully it will carry on in the way this book finished
This is a worthy installment to a multi-volume romp around the Galaxy, at least as much of it as the humans have settled. It's mostly a fast-paced thriller with plots and power-plays and the constant threat of annihilation. Of course there are the tense show-downs to keep the action-addicted satisfied as well. Reviewer Rob Roy has called it a treatise on leadership. I'm not sure I would go that far. This is the fourth book in the series that I've completed and there are hints throughout them of a further development along that line, but so far it hasn't borne fruit. I hope that it does so; that would make the series much more interesting to me. Don't get me wrong, I like a good yarn, but I like it better if it also makes me think- about what makes a good leader, what makes us fear and detest a foe like The Swarm, and so many other possibilities. So far I enjoy the ride, I hope that as it develops I may also get to wrestle with my thoughts on these and other subjects.
Independence is the start of a new series that follows on from the original Legacy Fleet Series that followed Tim Granger the Captain of several ‘Legacy’ class vessels in a war against an almost unstoppable opponent called the Swarm. Alongside Granger, was a Commander at the time, Shelby Proctor, who is a brilliant biologist, who has studied the Swarm, but is also incredibly intelligent at puzzling things out using science, or just logic. In the original series, it was Proctor who helped Granger defeat the Swarm, eventually, Granger took the last of the Legacy vessels, the USS Victory, and travelled into the black hole that the Swarm were using to enter our Universe, as the Swarm are actually not from our Universe, but they are cross-dimensional beings, and were using a particular black hole to communicate with other races in our Universe through something called the ‘Ligature’ to control them, and dominate or destroy all life in our Universe as they saw fit. In Book 4 of the series, we have leapt forward 30years, the Galaxy is trying to get over the effects of everything that happened in what was known as the Second Swarm War, Proctor, now a retired Fleet Admiral, and having been credited as the one who hunted down and destroyed every last Swarm Carrier in our known Universe to make sure they were destroyed, as well as making peace with the Dolmasi and the Skiohra, is now lecturing at a University on Britannia. However, the loss of her old ship, the flagship of the IDF, the ISS Chesapeake, and one of the most powerful ships in the fleet, has her recalled to duty and given command of a new, prototype ship, one with a new drive that allows for faster travel, and has additional firepower, the ISS Independence (Kind of a coincidence given the title of the book Hey??) Proctor also learns that her nephew, Danny Proctor, has apparently been involved in a shocking incident over a planet, in which a nuclear device has been exploded, and thousands are dead. Determined to find out what has happened to her nephew, and those responsible, as well as to identify this new threat and to once again, save humanity, Proctor takes command of the Independence. She also calls on some old friends to help her out, and we see the return of Tyler ‘Ballsy’ Volz as the CAG, Captain Prucha as her XO, and several new faces, a rather curious science officer, Commander Mumford, and a rather vexing Commander Yarborough who is her assistant XO. What follows is Webb at his absolute best. This is not just a Mil Sci-Fi like the original series, Webb has stepped it up multiple notches, and there are several storylines going on within this book, each of them full of intrigue and mystery. There is the main story of Proctor and the Independence, as they go and hunt this new alien threat. On top of that there is the side quest of discovering what has happened to Danny. Tied in with this is the storyline of the nuclear explosion over Sangre de Cristo. This leads to further storylines (Without Spoilers), relating to a separatist group within the IDF, called the Galactic People’s Congress (GPC), that wants to pull out of the IDF, as they are sick of all the wars and infighting. This introduces other characters, such as Ethan Zivic, one of the main characters of the story, who happens to be Ballsy’s son. This book is utterly captivating, as there are multiple storylines, all weaving in and out of each other, and through each other, and whilst you, the reader, start to have some idea of what is going on, the actual Characters have no idea of how these different story arcs are intersecting, and it makes for a fascinating and intriguing story as everything unfolds. Proctors character is just exceptional, this battle-hardened warrior, who has seen so much during her time, but is emotionally exhausted, and just over it all. All she wants is to go sit on a beach, drink and read, but she keeps getting pulled back into these battles. However, with her nephew missing, she is desperate to find out what has happened to him, and she feels honour bound to defend humanity. Her character has so much depth, passion, emotion and raw grit to her, she is just remarkable. Equally stunning, are the characters of Ballsy, and his son Ethan. Ballsy is just brilliant, with his serious, but laid back nature, he is a complete conundrum. He is absolutely dedicated to his work, and one of the best pilots and CAGs the fleet has, but he is also a total clown, with smart-alec comments always on hand. His son is an even better pilot than his Dad, but Ethan hates authority, most likely because of his Dad. Their relationship is interesting to say the least. Webb continues to show why he is the true master of Character Driven stories with this book, as the Character work is just outstanding, with each and every character having so much detail and depth to them. Webb has also done an exceptional job with the world-building, creating such amazing backdrops with which to tell his stories, from the various ships, to multiple different planetscapes, some beautiful planets that are habitable, others, lifeless rocks, but all of them given such wonderful detail. This is a thrilling start to what is going to be a brilliant series, one with multiple conspiracies, intrigue, nested within conspiracies, nested within mysteries. Each of the factions is trying to deceive the other, or out manoeuvre the other, whilst still trying to achieve their own goals, all whilst there is a dangerous alien threat trying to destroy them. It makes for an intense and engaging read, and one you can’t put down!! Must read for anyone who loved the first series, or is a fan of true Mil Sci-Fi, with Action Adventure, Mystery, Intrigue, and exceptional Characters!!
Nick Webb is quickly becoming my favorite author. The Legacy Fleet trilogy was the perfect combination of the familiar and the fresh, space opera based on real science (or what this layman can make out). The short chapters and quick pace combined with strong characters engaged in multiple storylines made for a truly engaging read. So when I finished the Legacy Fleet trilogy, I wanted to dive straight into the sequel trilogy, and wasn't disappointed.
Here we again have the perfect combination of the familiar and the fresh, only now they're new and returning characters, new yet familiar enemies, and new but timeless bureaucratic conspiracies. To say I enjoyed this book would be an understatement. I'd give it 10/10 stars if I could.
Sure, the first trilogy ended with a few loose ends. I was expecting some more of the same style of writing and some more non-stop action. Instead, we get an overarching plot that has loads of internal fighting and incompetent or corrupt leaders. With a new ship which is really weak, compared to the ones from the first trilogy (even though it is built 30 years later), and a new threat which is just too much for all the suspension of disbelief in the world. Sure, at the end we get a plausible explanation for why it is so impervious to all attacks, but it... just feels like too much. A much more boring book than the previous three.
Not sure where this series is going - I read the first trilogy (books 1 - 3) which I enjoyed. It appears that this is "another trilogy" in the making but I don't see book six. I just finished Independence which is listed as "book 4" and will read "book five". The story dragged a bit for the first third of the book but picked up later and then left you hanging as the story continues in book 5. It appears that the battles will continue with the "Swarm" which were supposed to be defeated at the end of the first three books. So now the story will get rebooted as the swarm come back. If yo9u didn't read the first three books I'm not sure you will appreciate this one.
This story takes place around 30 years after the previous book in this series. Captain Tim Granger is still, for all intents and purposes, falling into a black hole having just passed the event horizon. His action was a key part of the victory over the Swarm. Humanity has begun a new religion - The Grangerites - where Tim is God's messenger. Admiral Shelby Proctor has been called back to active duty because a new threat. There is also a bit of political unrest as the United Earth government begins to crumble. And so it goes - lots of action, space battles, friends gained and lost. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
We continue the story from the original trilogy and the quick pace of the story is continued also. Even though a few names are recognised as set 30 years later. I found many of the new characters not given much depth and with pace is hard to care what happens to them. The story is complicated and there are many parts but the original trilogy was messy and we understood as the main character's did so I hope this will be the same. You'll be confused but sure we will find out more over the next two books.
Didn't finish. The first trilogy was tense and action packed with characters being revealed in the heat of the moment. Now, 30 years later, and Webb has characters sitting around and chatting for large chunks of the book, interspersed with action sequences that are over very quickly and 2 separate side quests to find family members! I was bored by the half way point and after persevering for a bit longer I realised that I no longer cared. It's a shame. Webb is obviously trying something different to the first trilogy here, but it isn't working for me. Still recommend his first trilogy though.
Excellent continuation of a great at SciFi book series
This is the 4th book in this series and all have been excellent. The author does a good job of twisting real science with possible future technology to create a story that is hard to put down. The characters are believable and seem authentic and populate the stories with real personalities. I’ve been binge reading these books all through Christmas break and I am totally hooked. On to the next!
Outstanding, the tie in to the legacy trilogy was awesome. The Swarm is dead and their ships all destroyed, or is there something overlooked. The new threat or is a threat and the promise of more action and adventures for the crew of the ISS Independence. Bring on that next book and thanks for a GoodRead.
This is one of my favorite writers, and he has just gotten better. This is a really good book, with a very enjoyable story, fantastic characters, funny wit, and the best kind of ending; one that ends the story but leaves enough to keep the series going (cheesy cliffhangers get old fast). I honestly can say that this is one of the best books I've read all year.
Good beginning for something even bigger. I like that Nick brings us back Shelby and Volz as mature characters that will lead forward. From the moment that I started to read this book I couldn't wait to have a chance to keep reading to know what it will be next.
This is the fourth book in a trilogy. So the author can't count! There are two more, one written, and one to be published. At the heart of these books is leadership. It could rightly be called a tritise on leadership. A retired Admeral is called back to service, and become the savoir of the Earth. This is a complex, but well written story, with many a twist and turn.
A light and fast-paced sci-fi read. Fun, with some nice ideas, unexpected endings and intrigue - enough to keep you wanting to read more, to find out what happens next, but ultimately unsatisfying. A little bit more depth to this admittedly imaginative series would have been nice, and the characters, while likeable, are quite flat.
Throughly enjoyed reading this book, it is fast paced with some twist and turns. Great characters gritty, crabby but able to see through job. Some beautiful descriptive text of our plant and universe. Look forward to reading another book by this author
O have this a five rating it is what this book deserves and even more, as I have stated before Nick Webb is a excellent writer and I love his books but I think all writers can write just as great book with out all the MF, Fk, ect... But however I will entice all my friends to give his books a read. Robert Schultz
Seeing how convoluted the IDF leadership is, and having Shelby right in the middle doggedly working out the connections has turned this story sideways from a space opera to political intrige at the highest levels. Cant wait to see what happens next! Tim, are you listening?
Five Star drama and suspense surrounding the characters in this forth installment of The Legacy Fleet Series. Once again the compelling suspense and fast paced action of the crew of another Legacy Fleet ship race to keep humanity safe from unseen forces who plan to destroy the United Earth alliance. This is definitely a excellent read.
Some of these stories start out rough and I'm tempted to stop even if I always finish the book, but go on to the next? Then by the time I'm done, I've bought the next... Until I've finished the series. I just wished it could be more pg-13. Really don't need some of that crap in the story. It would lose nothing without it!
Nick continues to keep me so entertained, and Independence did so easily. Tim won't go away even from 13 billion years. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
If you have not read the legacy fleet trilogy start there! Three great books! This book brings the story back in a new direction. Nick Webb is a great author! His books flow like few others I have read and I have read thousands.
More twists and turns; a new enemy with new technology; and rebellion in their midst. I miss Granger and the war with the swarm to a degree, but Procter rises to the challenge. Will the swarm return? We will see.
Love Tim, Shelby, Ballsy and all the others. Very interesting story line, didn't understand much of the termology, but enjoyed and wanted to keep reading. Can't wait for the next book! Thank you
Could not put it down. You can live in real time with the characters of this series because they become real. Duty, honor love of family and humanity. Facing betrayal, death, and old age but going on because there is no other option.
An NW. SYFY. Novel (TLFS. - 4) A War in Space Between Humans and an Alien Ra
NW. has. penned the fourth novel in the Legacy Fleet Series, which is about a space war in the SOL. System between humans an an Alien race.....This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
A good addition to Webb's other books. This book continues the same kind of action of the first three books - lots of space battles, political intrigue, behind the scenes dealing, etc. I like Shelby Proctor better than Tim Granger.
