Very very slight spoiler warning, nothing you wouldn't know by reading the blurbs and previous books. No spoilers for this book!
This book was on my DNF list for forever. Why? Well, I have a problem. I get invested (capital letters with a ton of exclamation marks) into the characters, their lives and the outcome of these stories, the problems of an empath, but I digress. This series is the first where a couple broke up and I was quite mad ad the author for doing that to me. I was invested!! One of my best friends loves this series, though, and I really wanted to give this another go, because up until that point, so had I. My previous attempts to get back into the series was to start over with Book 1. This time I went straight to Book 5 where I left off and started reading.
That worked pretty well! I was able to appreciate the book outside of the romantic subplot and for the genius it is when it comes to world-building. It still had some stumbling blocks, but overall, I am really happy that I read it and will continue the series (in between Popsugar reads lol).
The first book in this series was good. But it started to go downhill from there. The subtle prejudice the books in the series pushes on the reader triggered my uneasiness. This book is the last straw for me as it contains the tropes I hate, putting down a character to justify other character, prejudice, love triangle etc.
Update:
The books in this series carry undertones of racism. I put it as prejudice in my original update because I hate to involve in online disputes over personal comments. But I want to put it out there now in this current climate as readers who just want enjoy reading books like me have initial warning before buying books in this series.
You can't go wrong with this series. I would recommend reading in order. The characters are super cute and well developed. I really love Rodney the rat and Darby the brownie.
These books have it all! Were cats, fairies, witches, vampires you name it! Even bigfoot! I can't wait to read the next in this series! So glad they're on kindle unlimited!
Why was Chase taken out as Jinx's boyfriend and potential husband? Chase deserves that our come after everything he went through and will continue to go through with this family. The father already proved his love is still strong and suffering. So why out Chase three that agony and now there is a friend of his in the mix going after her with no consideration for his heart. Kind knows good any well they broke up to protect her from future attack because of his relationship with her, if she just get her head out of her provincial butt. Chase is her soulmate and we know this by the past books so why change her heart so quickly and hurt Chase in the process? It not fair for the author to give us a love match them act like she must of not cared to much it she would not have jump on another man so quickly afterwards and then deliberately flaunt it in his face, that just evil and mean. Chase was crying for godsakes for the kids of his love, since I read the incents for your following books to know if I could continue not liking the Change in Chase's status in mind's life being relegated to nothing important. I will continue to read but I lost a little interest in this series I only want to read about Chase if he is even I evolved anymore😰.I feel so bad for his Love and Heart that is why I am only given it four stars instead of five as my usual. So disappointed 😞.
I really like this book series but Jinx is becoming progressively unlikeable. Her relationship with Tori is a little bit too cheesy and emotionally dependent (although their parents are even more so to a weird degree). The dynamics with Chase was really stupid in this book. I understand being angry about being dumped but the only time she talks to him is to try to power dominate him and humiliate him. Same with every other character it’s so weird. Once he “learns his place” she throws him a bone. His own father puts him down publicly??? All the characters cheer her on about how she needs to take charge and be powerful.... it doesn’t make sense - she doesn’t know anything and half of the problems are her fault and cheering her for being rude or obstinate about matters she has no idea about doesn’t sit well with me. It’s like, I’m in charge ok so what do we do next? It isn’t “feminism” or girl power. The plot device ends with kind of a repeat of the previous books.... so I dunno.
With the Halloween festival planning in full flow Jinx finds herself on two committee's.. the official and the ghostly..
Trying to plan events without creating an overabundance of hauntings takes plenty of planning especially when you have two rogue Strigoi gatecrashing it..
That they just happen to be Seraphina and Ioana, aka Sally-Beth and Joanna, the reason Kelly gave up her magic and later her first born child. Now though they are much more dangerous as the resurrection has mutated them into the far more dangerous blood sucking vampire.
Anton Ionescu is calling for his family to act upon the curse and kill Connor now that Kelly has resumed her powers but his family enjoy the freedom they have and instead help the Daughters of Knasgowa to end the feud and try to put the Strigoi Sisters back into the graves they belong in.
Chesterfields relentless pursuit of the Mother Tree's essence will put them all in danger again.
Harper's heroines are growing up fast and taking on far more than a follower of the story line might have imagined. Danger, intrigue and new, fascinating characters bring this fifth book in the series to an excellent climax... but nothing is ever what it seems, is it? Fortunately I already bought book six, you might want to do the same as well. A really good read.
I love an easy, humorous writing style with imaginative plots. This series is extraordinarily wonderful in the development of the characters, their interactions and the story details. I have to seriously intersperse this series with other authors or I would read through all the books in record time. These books would be a treat for any reader.
Juliette Harper never disappoints! This was a great story and I find myself becoming more and more excited to see what will happen with the characters this time. It is always fun to see how Jinx will grow and what new trouble is "brewing." I wish I could dive in and be friends with these people!
Ooooh this was great. Definitely the best of the series in regards to twists and turns. The only flaw was the numerous spelling and grammar errors interspersed. But that definitely didn’t dampen the storyline much. Off to the next book!
Jinx is coming into her own quite nicely. I still don't like the hiding things from her that she needs to know. Still think Chase is bit of a jerk. I feel for Tori and Gemma. I hope Tori's father comes to his senses soon.
Nothing like a Halloween carnival with real vampires, witches, fairies, and ghosts. Magical fights and ghost hunts make for a realistic spooktacular event while trying to keep the humans blissfully unaware of it all.
It's getting better and better. Can't wait to read more of Jinx's and Tori's adventures. There is no shortage of drama, mystery, action and all kinds of everything to keep me riveted.
The first few in this series was good, but got increasingly more difficult to follow. I stopped after this one because it was just too much. Too many "families" and characters and it got to the point where you couldn't keep anything straight anymore. That's never a fun read.
Loved this book. Jinx, Tori and friends are part of the Halloween festival. They continue their fight against evil as they learn more about their powers.
Much like book 3, book 5 feels like a middle story with lots of background. Unlike book 3, it was well done and flowed nicely. Looking forward to the exciting conclusion!
Dang, things just keep getting murkier and murkier! I love the addition of new characters and am quite impressed with all of the new wrenches that keep getting thrown in to help build the plot.. Definitely looking forward to the next book!
This is the most recent book in the Jinx Hamilton Mystery series, and it is probably the best so far. While Jinx is recovering from the break up with Chase and the loss of Myrtle, she is also deep into preparations for Briar Hallow's first ever paranormal festival. This is being held the week before Halloween through Halloween, and the boost to the city's tourism is phenomenal. Every business on in the town is reaping the tourist dollars and benefits of the festival. From crowds in the store to festival merchandise sold, everyone is getting involved in the fun. Jinx's father is even there to help and support Kelly and Jinx. Unfortunately, Gemma's husband 'Scrap' isn't on board and is on the verge of divorcing Gemma because of her witchcraft. All of these things work together to make more problems than you can imagine. This was one of the scariest of the books with so many unknowns and then vampires were added to the mix. Murder, stopping the vampires, seeing her brother, keeping everyone safe, worrying about Tori and Gemma with the "Scrap' problem-it is overwhelming. A couple new characters are added and offer some solid help to Jinx throughout the confusion. Not only does Jinx solve many problems, but she mentions some others and leaves them for another day. This insures the readers that there will be several more interesting books coming up! As far as I am concerned, they can't come fast enough! I am anxiously waiting for book 6 in the series. You won't want to miss any of these great books!
"Witch on Second" is the fifth book in "The Jinx Hamilton Mysteries" series by Juliette Harper. Jinx is an emotional mess at the start of this novel. Myrtle has become one with the Mother Oak, and Chase has just broken up with her. She keeps it together by doing what most people do in times of emotional stress. She works and plans a little recon mission of her own. The story transitions into a few weeks later when the town of Brier Hallow is preparing for SpookCon1. Just as a week of pre-Halloween activities takes place, Kelly and Gemma, are hit with a huge surprise. Can Jinx and crew hit a home run, or will they strike out at the bottom of the fifth? Overall, I enjoyed this latest addition to the JHMs. It shows some character growth on Jinx's part along with some angst that some of the secondary characters need to get through. There are also a couple of new characters thrown into the mix. Harper does a good job at layering new information into her stories along with going over important details so that the reader won't get lost or forget important information as the overall plot of the series progresses.
This series has rapidly become one of my favorites. At first, it seemed run of the mill "unsuspecting girl finds new powers" genre, and the addition of numerous paranormal types left me wondering if it would spill out of control as is often the case with ambitious world building. However, with each book the characters have fallen more into place and by this fifth installment, the author is hitting her stride. We now have a well constructed world with a few unique ideas woven into it and well developed characters who are neither dark nor jaded nor too stupid to live. It looks like we are set up for a nice ride through a few more books. Good work!
I just finished the fifth in this series. It was great. I really enjoy a good mystery that takes me out of the the world I live in. I loved the humor. I laughed at the variety of characters. The love story! And this series has many. They were so interesting. My favorite character is Darby. Read the series and see if you agree. D. Page
Interesting continuation but mostly background for upcoming books in the series wish there was more story and plot and less confusing types of other worldly beings
I was expecting another light quirky mystery series, but these books are proper fantasy. The history, relationships, and world building are truly wonderful. I am waiting eagerly for the next installment!
It took me a while to read because I kept losing interest. Its a long drawn out tale, of the past and present colliding. Where past secrets and lies are revealed and new secrets are hidden. As the main character slowly learns her fate and what is expected of her.
This cozy paranormal mystery series just keeps getting better and better. The cast of characters is growing in number and depth, as is the plot. I can't wait for the next installment.
