Escape to the Country

Rate this book
PART ONE of a serialised novel - a heartwarming and inspiring story about living the simple life and the joy of animals.

Working as a receptionist in a London vets, Sam is living far from her idea of a simple life. She’s always broke, rents a tiny flat, and is constantly arguing with her boyfriend. But the worst part is that her career is going nowhere. She wants to be a vet, but the most contact time with the animals she has is a quick hello when she books in their next appointment.

Something’s got to give, so when her parents suggest visiting her Nana Peggy in a small quiet picturesque village, she agrees, thinking a bit of R&R could do her good.

But rest and relaxation may not be the order of the day. Poor Nana Peggy’s lovely dog Rufus is unwell, and Sam can’t help but grow fond of him. With the help of Joe the local vet, a charming yet strangely distant man, Sam sets out on looking after him, despite her London life trying to call her back…

Note: this is part one of a four part serialised novel. The full length paperback will be available in June.

Thank you to Netgalley, Penguin random house ebury publishing and Sheila Norton for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.

You will find my review on Goodreads from today under Karen whittard and on Amazon from publication date under k.e.whittard.

I have been eagerly awaiting this book for the last few months. I was super excited when I was granted a preview read from NetGalley. I eagerly read this in one sitting. I must say it was a great introduction to the series and I have already preordered the next three books.

Sam is working as a veterinary receptionist in a busy London vets. She shares a tiny London flat with three other girls. And is dating Alex they have been together awhile and Sam feels that their relationship isn't going anywhere any more.

When a man rushes in with his dog which has been hit by a car and is in a bad state. Sam is quick to react and rushes to help them. But while in the treatment room. Sam gets nauseous a quick trip to the pharmacy confirms Sams greatest fears. The trip to her grandmothers couldn't come at a better time.

Rest, relaxation and escapism was what Sam plans on. But things don't go quite according to plan. Will Sam end up facing up to her fears? And will she return home to London? Or set up a new life with her Nan?

This is a great start to what seems like will be a great series.

Happy reading everyone

I haven't read a Shelia Norton books before, am not really sure why? If her other novels are so cosy and lovely written as "The Vets at Hope Green" than I've missed tons and am going to make up for this as soon as possible. Moreover, I love animals so this novella being about vets could work really well for me. Well, this is what I hope for, at least :) And, as it turned out, it was a great introduction to the series, a feel - good, quick read. Tad predictable, tad too sweet but overall a nice, cosy novella, offering you a few moments of relax, rest and escapism.

Our main character, Sam, always wanted to be vet but right now she's working as a veterinary receptionist in London. She's dating Alex - they've been together for a while but Sam starts to think that this relationship doesn't have a future - that is, until something happens that makes her to think everything over. A visit to her grandmother couldn't be planned for a better moment, then - Sam is hoping to recharge her batteries and make some important decisions in the countryside. Long walks with her grandmother's spaniel Rufus, sea air, Nan's company is all what she needs right now. What she doesn't need is problems and a new village vet, Joe Bradley...

The story ends, of course, with a cliff hanger, as it well can be expected in a series, and naturellement it made me want to read the story further. Moreover, I fell for the characters and I like Sam very much - I found myself keeping my fingers crossed for her, admiring how she dealt with the stressful situations, how she was around other people and animals. You could feel she has a big heart made of gold. There was some jumping to conclusions on her side, I suppose, as I think that one of the plotlines is going to turn a little differently than she thinks, but let's just wait and see. Joe, on the other hand, the enigma vet in the town, was driving me crazy - he may be good around animals, and it is something already, right, but his hot/cold blowing was incomprehensible for me and it annoyed me a little. I am guessing there must be a perfect reason for him being like this but as yet it was not revealed. So patience, my friends, patience.
I also loved the setting of this novella - the gorgeous, coastal countryside of Hope Green in Dorset where everybody knows everybody else, and the feel - good community spirit was visible there. Heck, when people say how sorry they are because your dog has just died, they must be lovely folks to live around, right? No wonder Sam felt immediately at home there - I felt immediately at home when reading it!

So yes, it was a very promising start to the new series, methinks. What is great is the fact that as much as I am guessing how some things are going to develop there is also a lot of potential and the story can really go in multiple directions. It was a light, easy, sometimes too far - fetched, yet interesting read and I am looking forward to reading it further. It was not a story full of twist, turns and fireworks but it is clear that it was not meant to be like this, and sometimes it's great to read such an easy, light novella. There is this overall feel - good factor to it, cosy atmosphere and even though it looks predictable, it didn't bother me so much. Looking forward to part 2!

Nothing here to get upset about.
A gentle heart-warming account of idyllic country life presented to Sam who is having doubts about her relationships, her career and her own desire to live in a rural landscape away from London.
Nothing to stimulate you here.
A pleasant story of good natured folk wishing the best for everyone, although there could be some currency in the village Casanova, the stressed post mistress and the over worked vet receptionist in Hope Green.
Nothing here to surprise.
A young woman needs a break from her boyfriend, finds she has lost the ability to share her hopes for the future as they no longer seem common goals. She is relieved when she can scuttle off to her Nan's in Hope Green where she has spent many happy summers and can now consider her future.
Plenty left to say here.
This is part one of four which in total would comprise a whole book of some 320 pages. It just about standalone as a novella but clearly has more to say and resolve. At times, you feel you can write the story but the author finds scope to take back control although it seems it should ever be so. So perhaps not a mystery but a gentle story of hope and ambition unfortunately punctuated by romance, actual and in the character's mind.
I enjoyed the relationship between Sam and her Nan and loved the element of caring for animals. This isn't James Herriot although I did read all in the series of All creatures great and small. It has its own voice and while it isn't quite my book of choice it will appeal to many and the shorter parts bringing the whole may well encourage a younger or non-reader to embrace this series. I hope so.

This was a lovely start to The Vets at Hope. A great range of loveable characters some more friendly than others but a good mix.

I really enjoyed it and cant wait to see what's next for the characters and whether Sam stays in Hope Green or returns to London.

I’m really not sure why I haven’t read a Sheila Norton novel before but after reading this novella I feel like I’ve found a new favourite author. I devoured this part one of the new series by Sheila Norton, The Vets at Hope Green: Escape to the Country it’s a wonderful start to a blossoming new series.

I love animals and to work with them seems like one of my ideal jobs so this series looked perfect for me. We are introduced to Sam who is a receptionist at a city centre vets in London. Sam is in a relationship with Adam but feels like something is missing; for starters their dream lifestyles don’t seem to match. Sam also feels she wants more out of work.

To try and recharge her batteries Sam set’s off to the Dorset countryside to visit her Nan in the gorgeous coastal village of Hope Green. Sam is hoping the sea air, taking her nan’s dog Rufus for walks and enjoying her nan’s company is just what she needs to take stock of her life. Sam didn’t expect a life changing event in her personal life to cause her some more heartache and decisions need to be made personally and possibly professionally. Whilst in the village Sam makes an acquaintance with the new village Vet Joe Bradley who ruffles feathers with his animal owners but has the most wonderful charm and patience with their animals. This man seems an enigma to Sam, one minute she is so alarmed with his rudeness and the next she is swooning over his kindness to the animals.

Escape to the Country has left me wanting more and I can’t wait to read the next (and all) in the series. We are left with questions unanswered and situations need to be resolved. This start to the series which sets to be a wonderful feel good romance is full of charm, gorgeous countryside coastal settings, life’s struggles in a more serene setting away from the hustle and bustle of the city, characters to learn and love and animals to fill your heart. Perfect read to start the New Year with. 5/5*

Sam's life hasn't been going to plan, with her career at a standstill and her life in London not cracked up to what she thought it would be, Sam is unsure of what to do with her life now. Wanting to get away for the big city of London, Sam decides to go and visit her Nana Peggy.
Being the country gives Sam time to think about what she wants, although the more time she spends in Hope Green the more she feels at home. Her small run in with the gorgeous village vet, makes Sam think about her love life and is her boyfriend the person she can picture a future with.
Life at Hope Green is one of complete peace but Sam isn't sure she could pick up her whole life and make a big move, but then again sometimes life works in mysterious ways making the choice for you instead.
I loved Nana Peggy, she is such a sweet and likeable character. The way she is with her animals and her with Sam, she is willing to do anything for them and enjoys having someone there to keep her company. I also loved Sam, her character is one which many people will be able to relate to. Having a career which she doesn't like, living in a city which always seems to be moving at a fast pace that she can keep up with. Not to mention a boyfriend who is the complete opposite to the person she fell in love with.
The first installment of the book is a great book, it has everything I want in a story. Charming men, a small village which will make you wish you lived there and animals which are so cute, you will want them for yourself.

Sam has always wanted to be a vet and being the receptionist at a Vets practice is not quite enough, Feeling dissatisfied with life she goes to stay with her Nana and her dog Rufus - her boyfriend Alex is blowing hot and cold and she needs some rest and relaxation in the country.

Hope Green is a lovely traditional Dorset Village and in true village style everyone knows everyone and everyone's business! Sam soon meets the village vet Joe and finds him unfriendly compared to the rest of the villagers and so she is intrigued and soon totally immersed in the village life

A great start to a new series, setting the scene and the main characters so definitely looking forward to the next instalment

I absolutely adored the first book in a new series set in Hope Green.
Sam is a little disillusioned with life back in London and decides that a trip to visit Nana Peggy is in order. She lives in a wonderful little village where everyone knows each other- but the new vet seems to be a bit abrupt.
I can imagine what we have in store over the next books- and I can't wait to hear more about the villagers and the vets surgery.
Is this the perfect place for Sam to take stock and will she find answers to all her problems? I loved everything about this book and can't wait to hear more.

Sam works as a receptionist in London. Even though her job is at a veterinary practice she doesn’t get the chance to be with the animals herself and that makes her sad. There’s little for Sam to be happy about. It’s difficult for her to make ends meet, she misses fresh air and her relationship is rapidly going downhill. A trip to the country to stay with her Nana is exactly what she needs to recharge her batteries.

Sam’s grandmother has an adorable dog. Rufus is quite old already and he isn’t very fit anymore. Because Sam worries about him she takes him to the local vet. Joe is wonderfully kind to animals, but he isn’t treating Sam the same way, he’s rather grumpy instead. Is the man who’s so nice to Rufus really the same person as the one who’s always so rude to Sam?

Escape to the Country is a great charming story. I immediately loved the countryside atmosphere. Sam is a kind and caring person and I enjoyed reading about her adventures. Her grandmother is fabulous as well, reading about her put a big smile on my face. Joe is fascinating. His strange distant attitude made me instantly intrigued and I can’t wait to find out more about him. Sheila Norton’s characters are all really special and I fell in love with her story from the very first page.

I’m a big fan of books about animals and Sheila Norton writes about them in a warm and descriptive way that makes them come to life incredibly well. Her writing style has an easy flow and I was immediately spellbound by her charming and entertaining story. I absolutely loved this first part of The Vets at Hope Green and can’t wait to read more.

I kindly received this from the publishers through Netgalley, but that doesn't alter my opinion.

Honestly, this is all the things I wouldn't find interesting a book, I mean it's marketed as a chick-lit/romance and I really don't read them, however this had one thing that peaked my curiosity.. The title.

Having worked at a vets myself for a short while and currently pursuing my dream of working with animals by studying a degree, I was instantly curious. The synopsis roped me in and I found myelf really excited to read it and it sounded like something I really wanted to enjoy.

I also read that the author lives around my area and I think it's awesome to support local/indie authors and give them the praise they deserve.

From the very beginning I found myself really enjoying the writing style. It was really nothing complex or super amazing but I loved the simple and easy flow of it. It felt layed back and I didn't have to try too hard to understand it. It actually reminded me of a matured version of the Animal Ark books that I loved as a child (and kind of want to go and collect now!).

The storyline felt very realistic and kind of resonates a little with my own (albeit minimal) experience in the veterinary world, so I found myself really connected with what was going on and was fully invested with our main character, Sam, and her life. I'm glad the romance side wasn't too much and that it mainly focused on Sam and her love for animals. I hope this theme is kept for the rest of the books, but in saying that, the little romance we did have I actually enjoyed!

I adored the characcters, but from the get go Adam (Sam's boyfriend) sounded like a right prick. He didn't seem to care about Sam at all and her doubts about him were so realistic! I totally understand! Sam on the other hand I found an insant connection with. Her dream of a country cottage house is just like mine, with all the animals and kids running about in the garden. I like her personality a lot! And Nana was amazing!

The only fault I found was a random repeated line, which was actually repeated before it was supposed to be, so initially I was rather confused. Aside from that there were the odd mistakes in spelling but those are really just minor editing errors that can easily be amended. I've just mentioned those in the hopes that they could be fixed before the proper release, if that hasn't already happened. Oh and I would prefer more diversity in cast, but it kind of makes sense for the traditional old-fashioned village this story is mainly set in.

This was a wonderful book that I flew through and enjoyed every moment of. I read the last half to my partner and even though he didn't have the background of the earlier events in full he really enjoyed it too.

I'd totally recommend this book and can't wait to go onto the rest of the books!

Pick it up, give it a go and enjoy! >(^_^)<

What a truly delightful novel this is, although it is only Part One so really just giving you a chance to sus the place out and a who is who for the story line. Little Sam, as her family affectionately still call her, loves her job as a receptionist at quite an exclusive inner city Vets. London though isn't a cheap place to live so she decides that she has had her fill of the rat race and her obnoxious boyfriend but the icing on the cake is when she discovers something she wasn't expecting to find, enough is enough and she decides on a break away from it all. An Easter visit to her Nan at Hope Green on the Dorset coast sounds like the perfect retreat.
Little Sam is such an easy character to like, a lady with an huge love of animals and compassion for people. There is such a wonderful array of people in the village. A place where everyone knows everyone else and all of their business too. Brilliant colourful characters that have already established themselves in my mind. There are a couple of story lines that have taken off quite nicely and although some of this story seems predictable (I will see) it is making perfect reading. A lovely story so far with exciting times ahead.
I wish to thank Netgalley and Penguin Random House Ebury Publishing for an ARC of this book which I have chosen to review.

Hope Green was my Hope for that future, and I was determined not to look back.

As a veterinarian myself, of course this book cover got my attention. I was in a serious need for a cute quick read, and that's what I've got.
Sam used to work as a receptionist in a London veterinary practice and, after some issues with her boyfriend Adam, she decides to move to the rural Hope Green, "the exact opposite of London".
And then she meets the local vet, Joe Bradley. And so it starts, the tale of man-is-rude-to-woman-but-she-still-finds-him-irresistable! :)

I probably won't go on with the rest of the series, but it kept me entartained for a couple of hours.

4.5 Stars.
Sam dreams of being a vet and living the idyllic life in the country, but her life couldn't be more different, working as a receptionist and living in busy London. When life gets too much after some stressful encounters with her boyfriend, Sam decides to take a trip to Hope Green, a place that's just like her dream. But what will happen when she gets there and who will she meet?

'The Vets at Hope Green' is a lovely tale with a cosy feel to it. The book is split into four parts and this is just part one of those four. Part one is very short and didn't take me long to read at all. The story follows Sam, after struggling to cope living in London, she ends up travelling to Hope Green, where her Nana lives, for a short holiday. The story is told in the first person from Sam's point of view which I like as you see Sam's thoughts on Hope Green and the people living there, her views being that of a city dweller which I can easily relate to.

Though this is just the first part of the story, you get an instant feel for the atmosphere of the place and the different people living in Hope Green. The characters seem well developed, though we've only been introduced to many of them, and I really like the awkward relationship between Sam and the vet Joe which will probably be the main feature of the entire four book series.

The story isn't particularly exciting but I doubt it's meant to be and it feels like there's a predictability to how the tale will go but that doesn't bother me at all as I often enjoy stories where reading the journey is more important than knowing the destination.

There's nothing offensive in the book and it has an overall feel-good and cosy atmosphere to it. It does feel predictable but I'm still intrigued to read more. It's very difficult to comment on whether this will turn out to be a great series or not, but given the good start I'm certainly looking forward to part two, though I would have personally preferred all the parts together in one book.

This first instalment of the story manages to pack in so much emotional turmoil, taking the reader into the story from the very start. It is told from the point of view of Sam, who works as a Vets’ receptionist in London. She’s moved to the city four years ago and is starting to feel unsettled with all aspects of her life, including her relationship with her boyfriend who seems to have very different aspirations and expectations for the future.

Disgruntled, Sam decides to go to stay with her Gran in the picturesque Hope Green for a fortnight. She makes a startling discovery just before setting out, giving her lots to consider. Anticipating having time for thinking, rest and relaxation, village life has its own amazing characters and scenarios which are brought to life in the reader’s imagination. It is a great start - and I can’t wait to read the subsequent parts to the story as this, obviously, leaves so many questions awaiting answers and I just want to know more about what happens next in Sam’s life!

If you love to read about animals, human interest, emotional quandaries and superb scenery, look no further, this story starter, set in the glorious Dorset countryside, will take you there!

Many thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for gifting me an ARC of this novel. This is my honest review.

First of a series of four, this begins with Sam living in London and working as a vets' receptionist where, despite her best efforts she has only the minimum of contact with the animals. Having always wanted to be a vet, she hankers after more. Add in to the mix a long term relationship going nowhere fast, and it seems a far better idea to visit her Grandma for two weeks at Easter instead of the planned break at her boyfriend's family home.

Hope Green is a village which sounds exactly as you would expect of a close-knit community, and this beginning leads into a wealth of possibilities for the rest of these books.

A short, but oh so enjoyable read which left me feeling bright and breezy ... definitely a series to stick with and one to recommend.

I received an arc copy via Net Galley for my honest and unbiased review.

I automatically loved the sound of this from the synopsis. Sam is a receptionist at a vets and her life is far from the way she wants it to be: her boyfriend Adam and she have different ideals in life- she wonders what a more rural life outside the hustle and bustle of the Capital may be like, whereas Adam is more career-minded and a pure urbanite. She takes a break from it all at her nan's. This is a very engaging, well-paced story of self discovery and the characters are mostly likeable. The story is very atmospheric and this is the first novella in a series. I am so glad I discovered Sheila Norton's books! Thank you to Netgalley for the copy I received in exchange for an honest review. This left me wondering what else will happen.

This was a very cute intro into the Hope Green series.

Sam decided she needed a break from the hustle and bustle of living and working in London so decides to go and spend Easter with her Nana in a quaint village in Dorset.

Part One delves into some of the details of Sam's life back in London with her long term boyfriend, Adam, and begins to give you a glimpse into what she will experience whilst staying in Hope Green; enough to make you want to read Part Two.

Disappointing

I really quite liked the characters and storyline, easy to read and quite engaging, however I had not realised it was a serialised novel and was amazed when it came to a very abrupt end! So therefore, disappointing.

this is the first book in a series and I am so happy that I decided to read this short book (around 100 pages long) - it was a wonderful book to read in between two longer books. A nice break. I loved everything about it, the characters, the lovely settings, the issues that the main characters are facing, the love for animals (and for dogs) that have the main character, and the relationships that are starting to build up between the main character and the people from the village where the main character took a little holiday to be with her grandmother and away from her troubles. Lovely lovely book, I can't wait to read the second part! I have it in my TBR pile and won't wait very long to read it!!!! I recommend this book 100 %!

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this review copy.

A lovely little story about Sam. She’s working as a receptionist in a London Veterinary Surgery. Her life isn’t great, she never has any money, and she’s beginning to realise that her boyfriend who she lives with isn’t the man she wants to be with anymore. Instead of spending the Easter holidays with her boyfriend and his family she decides to visit her nan instead.

Nan couldn’t be happier to have her there, and ends up introducing her to the local vet, Joe. Sam can’t work him out – he’s so miserable and unfriendly to humans, but is wonderful with animals. She visits the surgery one day with her nan’s dog, Rufus, and finds the receptionist snowed under with work and can’t cope. Sam starts to rethink her life. Can she be happy working in a little veterinary surgery in a little village instead of her busy life in London?

This is a short story in a four part story. A lot of authors seem to be doing this lately where they split a normal book into four parts and release each part separately, with the full book coming later. I’m not really a lover of these books as by the time you’re getting into the story, it’s ending and you’re having to wait for the next part. The story was a good story, it started off a bit slow, but then picked up and I started getting interested in the characters and they started to develop their own personal stories. The book then finished!! But it has got me intrigued to try Part 2, 3 and 4 when they are all released!!

A solid story with a promise of great things to come from the premise of a disgruntled veterinary receptionist, aching for more responsibility and yearning for a quieter life. In a vain attempt at dealing with a bombshell that will impact her entire life, she returns to the village that featured in her childhood. Becoming the subject of village gossip within hours of arrival she meets a man who is abrasive and acerbic in personal interactions, but just a delight when dealing with illness and infirmity in animals. She is repulsed and attracted simultaneously.

This has all the right elements to be a lovely romantic, village story, but it ends too quickly This is my one and only complaint.

The characters are fab, the setting perfect for a comforting read and Another two or three chapters would have rounded it out perfectly Now I know the whole saga is destined to unfold over three volumes, so this is more of an amuse bouche to the rest, but for me this was just first book was too short! We can guess where it is going, but personally needed more plot before we got close to the central portion.
