1. Torn by Dean Murray Not Interested
I did not like the first book in this series and after 2 chapters I had no desire to give this one a chance either. Unlikeable characters and zero world building.

2. Awaken (Awakened Fate #1) by Sky Malone ***3 Stars
Chloe has always wanted to visit the ocean but her parents are creepily adverse to her having anything to do with water. So like any good teenager, she goes on vacation with her friend Bailey to a beach house. Turns out that she is part mermaid and there is a whole cult of creatures that want to sacrifice her to in order to gain more power. While all this is going on she gets closer to Bailey's brother Noah who has his own secrets. Zeke is a merman who discovers Chloe and can't figure out how she doesn't know what she is and why she seems to be different. This was very ok. There were so many angles to it, and I didn't think it was explained very well...I still couldn't tell you how Bailey's family is all related. And there were just too many made up words that didn't have a clear pronunciation (I know there was a guide in the front but I don't have the patience to flip back and forth on the kindle app) so I ended up just getting the gist of things instead of an actual understanding.

3. Beautiful Demons (Shadow Demon Saga #1) by Sara Cannon ****4 Stars (PR)
Harper is an orphan with strange powers that have forced her from many foster homes. She ends up at Shadowford in the town of Peachville, and it's not long before she notices some strange things. The town seems to be run by some strong women who also seem to be like Harper. When Harper becomes one of the popular crowd she enjoys it but things also seems off to her...if only she could remember.

4. Five (Elemental Enmity #1) by Christie Rich **2 Stars (PR)
This one had so much potential but so many things wrong with it...
-There was a lot of inconsistencies to the story: she went for a run but then remarked about her jeans. who wears jeans when they go for a run...
-The dialogue felt like it should have been in a regency romance which may make sense for the fae characters but how was it that no one thought it odd
-There were a lot of things that seemed superfluous...like Natalie, was she necessary?
-and all anyone kept saying was how Rayla couldn't be left alone but all anyone did was leave her alone.
-Rayla and Cassie were allegedly best friends but it really seemed like they hated each other...
It was just a struggle to finish...

5. Bitterrot by SM Reine & Heather Hildenbrand **2 Stars
Charlie is a werewolf who lives with her mom until one night she is kidnapped and brought to her father's pack. She immediately learns she has a sister whom she will have to fight for the right to be alpha of the pack. Oh and whoever wins is also going to have to marry a vampire. This seemed like it could be ok, but there was too much story in too short a book to really have any feeling.

6. Bound by Duty (Bound #1) by Stormy Smith ***3 Stars (PR)
I have mixed feelings about this one. I liked the initial story but I don't think enough details were revealed by the end to really make it satisfying. Most of the time Amelia was just crying that everyone was always hiding things from her, which was true but I could have done without a few of those scenes...they just became repetitive and the middle of the book just had no spark to it. The characters were ok, none were great. And just the whole let's not tell Amelia what's going on because it will protect her just made no sense. It seems to me that if she had any clue what was going on she would have been way better at dealing with everything. So overall it was ok, I may read the next one but I won't rush to do so.

7. Ignited (#1) by Desni Dantone ***3 Stars
Kris's parents were murdered when she was a small child, when she was a little older she was rescued from an unsafe foster home, and most recently she was pulled from the wreckage of a fatal car accident. Each time she saw a man with blue eyes...now he shows up again and is not quite the angel she dreams of him being. Kris finds herself in the middle of an ancient war between good and evil and turns out both sides want her dead....except for one guy from each side that is head over heels for her. This was ok, I thought there was a good amount of action and a good amount of romance and I liked the mythology twist. I thought the end there was a bit too much of "no, I care more about Kris"...but besides that I very much enjoyed it and will read the next in the series.

8. King of Ash and Bone (Shattered Realms #1) by Melissa Wright **2 Stars
Mackenzie's brother is marked by one of the flying beasts that invaded their world and they don't know what it means. To protect her Riley runs off to join the army where he has to hide his mark to avoid being quarantined. After he leaves Mackenzie unknowingly saves the life of the one who basically caused all of it. This was ok, could have been a lot better if I really understood what was going on. There was lots of talk of kings and guards and sons of sons being chosen or something but none of it came together to form a cohesive story in my opinion. I liked the relationship between Mackenzie and Hunter and would have just liked to have been able to understand the worlds a bit more.

9. Xoe (Xoe Meyers #1) by Sara C. Roethle **2 Stars
Xoe and her friends live in a small town where nothing ever happens, until....So this new kid Dan starts cool and is super weird. He stares and lurks and just generally is off putting, but he is hot so Xoe's friends want to hang out with him. Dan ends up scratching Lucy to turn her into a werewolf like him, enter Jason, a vampire who has been tracking Dan. The group comes together to protect Lucy and Xoe discovers that she's not quite human herself. I thought the story idea was a decent one but it just didn't come together in a satisfying way. The girls acted like none of these near death experiences were really a big deal...and if this book was funny then I could have been ok with it.

10. Meeting Destiny **2 Stars (PR)
This is another book that I felt the actual development of the story took a back seat to how "connected" the main characters felt.
This is from the blurb...
'A mysterious clairvoyant seeks Lauren out and tells her not only of her life now but what the future may hold. Soon Lauren is in the middle of a murder investigation and a questionable friendship with the key suspect. Law enforcement, friends and family are concerned for Lauren but unfortunately they are unaware of the true danger…Sinister forces are at work and will stop at nothing to destroy Lauren’s abilities.' Ok, so i felt the mysterious clairvoyant just gave her a bunch of random info about mates and protectors and told her to figure it out. And after the first half of the book i didn't sense too much concern coming from her parents, her mom just seemed over it. And what is this about sinister forces? That sounds interesting I would have liked to read that.

Overall a good selection of stories. Some were well written, but not my cup of tea. Other books caught my interest and I've gotten the second book in the series. I felt that the price was right and I have grown to really like the "bundle" form of packaging books from multiple authors.

Different

I didn't read all the stories in this set only because some of them were not a genre I care for. But the ones I did read were very well written and enjoyed thoroughly.

I've only read one of the stories so far in this great collection, so here is my review of it:

Xoe by Sara Roethle

I picked this book up on Amazon Kindle for free thinking it would pass the time while I waited for my doctor appointment. It took a few minutes to get really interested in the book, but by the time the nurse had called me back I was truly hooked.

The book is about 16 year old Xoe and her discovering that she is part demon and that there are supernatural creatures who really exist.

It's a fun read and I instantly liked the characters. There are quite a few grammatical errors/typos (hence my rating of 4 stars), but if you are able to overlook them, you will enjoy this book. I am currently on book 3 and have all intentions of purchasing books 4 and 5 and any others the author releases in the series. I'd love to see this made into a movie.

Dean Murray never fails to write a really good story, so it doesn't surprise me that he has gathered together nine more authors that all give you well-written, exciting stories with such interesting characters that you won't want to put these books down until you finish all ten of them. This is a great collection of shape shifters, demons, mermaids and others, all by writers that won't disappoint you. Believe me...you are going to enjoy every single story in this set. I know I did.

You'll love this box set!

Beautiful Demons, Five and Ignited were my favorite! Granted, all of the books were wonderful, those three stood out the most. I've read the entire Beautiful Demons series, so it was refreshing to read Book one again. I give this box set a well deserved 5 stars! It has a combination of everything! You don't want to pass this up!

Mixed bag, but mostly worthwhile

As expected with most anthologies, some if the books were good, some less so.
My favorite was probably Torn, though I struggled with some aspects that required having read the first book in the series. I ended up reading them both (Torn for the second time) concurrently so I could understand timelines better, but I'm a little overly obsessive.

A well written, great fantasy book of different stories of fairies, vampires, as many creatures as you wish in one collection. Perfect stories to take you away from every day life for a trip into another world. Grateful to have been introduced to these authors
