Walter Lucius is the pen name of Walter Goverde. He was born in Den Helder, the Netherlands, in 1954. The writer, sceenwriter, producer and director died on 22 July 2021 at the age of 67. He suffered since a long time from serious depressions.

The story begins with journalist Farah Hafez being kidnapped and forced on camera, into pledging her allegiance to a terrorist group - she’s told if she doesn’t, a young girl will be killed right in front of her. Farah reluctantly repeats the script she’s been given but in doing so she goes straight to the top of the ‘most wanted’ list of both international security and the criminal classes alike!

Farah had been investigating what appeared to be a hit and run involving a young boy, but this was far from straight forward, and pointed to some very high profile individuals, and, in turn is the cause of her present demise. Right now, she has no idea how she will be able to demonstrate to international security, that she has no links to any terrorist organisations, or even if she’ll live long enough to get the chance to prove her innocence!

Angel in the Shadows will take you into some very dark and disturbing places, but I have to say it was particularly fast paced and produced some truly heart pounding moments. The characters had great depth to them and although the narrative was a little complex, it was certainly well written, and without question a real page turner to boot! Walter Lucius is not an author I’m familiar with, but I’d be happy to read further offerings of his in the future.

Following on from the events of Butterfly on the Storm Dutch-Afghan journalist Farah Hafez finds herself compromised in Moscow and on the run in Indonesia, desperate to expose the oligarch behind numerous corruption plots. While she and her friends are investigating this corruption Chief Inspector Radjen Tomasoa of the Amsterdam police is investigating the hit and run on a young Afghan boy and assorted murders associated with it.

I enjoyed Angel in the Shadows much better than Butterfly on the Storm as it seems easier to follow, better organised and simpler in its interconnecting links. The narrative shifts mainly between Farah Hafez, her friend Paul Chapelle and Radjen Tomasoa and with each having a separate investigation (with overlaps) and experience it makes the novel compulsive reading, rather than the choppy affair its predecessor is. The plot is ambitious with its international settings and high level corruption but it basically boils down to good old fashioned greed. Much of it is nonsense with the protagonists being rescued from certain death by various unlikely scenarios but it’s good, entertaining nonsense as Mr Lucius keeps up a relentless pace that had me glued to the pages.

As this is book 2 in a trilogy I would recommend reading the series in order but I would also recommend putting some time and a few other books in between them as there is a lot of necessary recapping in this book which experience tells me would be annoying if you read them in too close proximity.

When thinking about the characters my big question is why bother? Farah and Paul are pursuing a corrupt Russian oligarch with bottomless pockets and a propensity for violence so why not walk away? It turns out that they are idealists with a strong sense of justice and an even stronger streak of stubbornness. I suspect that their self righteousness would be annoying in real life but they are ideal characters for a thriller. My favourite character, however, is Radjen Tomasoa, another stubborn character, but much more human with doubts, frailties and a desire to be a ninja.

Angel in the Shadows is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

Angel in the Shadows is the second book in The Heartland trilogy, and we catch up with Farah right at the moment when she's rescued from captivity. Now, the brave and intelligent journalist has to untangle a large web of deceptions in order to reach the root of all this mess. But can she do it before she's caught for a pledge of allegiance she didn't freely declare in the first place?

Admittedly, Angel in the Shadows has an interesting concept. It's a spy-like plot: fast-paced and intelligent. Sadly, the narration felt very hindered. It felt like many things were missing from the story as a whole. It was hard to empathize with the hero, and at times if felt like parts of the story were missing. At points it reached a very high level of confusion, which made it difficult for me to carry on reading.

Het is Schaduw wat de Klok slaat.

Met zijn debuut ‘Vlinder in de Storm’ won Walter Lucius in 2013 de Schaduwprijs. Zijn tweede boek heet ‘Schaduwvechters’ en het is inderdaad ‘schaduw’ wat de klok slaat. Onze hoofrolspelers doen hun uiterste best om alles wat verborgen is in de schaduw, aan het licht te brengen. Al moeten ze hiervoor een schaduwgevecht leveren, met zichzelf of met de wereld. Hun schimmige strijd bezorgt de lezer heel wat aangename en spannende uurtjes waarin de diepgang niet ontbreekt.
Dit tweede deel van de Hartland-trilogie liet even op zich wachten. Lucius ontwikkelde zijn schrijfstijl en besloot het eerste deel te herzien zodat beiden beter op elkaar aansluiten. De verhaallijn is hetzelfde gebleven en details die niet nodig zijn voor het verhaal zijn geschrapt. Beide boeken zijn in een nieuw jasje uitgebracht en deel één is voor een schappelijk prijsje verkrijgbaar.
‘Vlinder in de Storm’ eindigt met de Tsjetsjeense gijzeling in Moskou. Onderzoeksjournaliste Farah zit met een bomgordel om vastgebonden op een stoel en er klinkt een explosie. In ‘Schaduwvechters’ blijkt ze nog in leven te zijn en wordt ze gezocht door de autoriteiten die menen dat ze een jihadistische terroriste is. Ze vlucht naar Indonesië waar ze hoopt de waarheid over de criminele Russische oligarch Lavrov te achterhalen. Lavrov lijkt de spil te zijn van een wereldwijd crimineel complot waarbij politieke omkoping, chantage en moord niet worden geschuwd. Haar collega’s Paul en Anya dragen hun steentje bij, om vanuit Moskou en Amsterdam, dit ingewikkelde complot te ontmaskeren en Farah’s onschuld te bewijzen. Ondertussen onderzoekt de politie in Nederland een ongeluk waarbij de dader is doorgereden en een Afghaans kind het slachtoffer is. Er is sprake van kindermisbruik en mensenhandel, en de Nederlandse minister Lombard lijkt erbij betrokken. Ook is er een connectie met de corrupte zakenman Lavrov. Inspecteur Radjen Tomasao ondervindt een hoop tegenwerking in zijn onderzoek omdat bewijsmateriaal verdwijnt en getuigen het loodje leggen.
Kenmerkte het vorige boek zich door een stormvloed van details, in dit deel is lucht en ruimte te bespeuren. De schrijfstijl lijkt sierlijker, nog beeldender en daardoor compacter. Zo vergelijkt Inspecteur Tomasoa zijn huwelijk met de scheuren in het plafond waarvoor hij de energie niet kan opbrengen ze te dichten. Zonder in details te treden, is met deze beeldende beschrijving alles over zijn huwelijk gezegd wat er te zeggen valt. Het verhaal is beter leesbaar, er is meer ruimte voor de ontwikkeling van de karakters en de ingewikkelde plot is makkelijker te volgen. De wisseling van vertelperspectief zorgt voor de spanning, hoewel in het begin voor het gevoel wel vaak gesprongen wordt tussen de belevenissen van de hoofdpersoon. Na zo’n honderdvijftig pagina’s valt het niet meer op en zuigt Walter je mee in de belevenissen van onze helden. Het verhaal wordt levensechter doordat Lucius uit de actualiteit put en schandalen zoals de Tsjetsjeense gijzeling een twist geeft die zijn weerga niet kent. Dat alles één groot complot blijkt, maakt het verhaal nog ijzingwekkender.

Opvallend is het terugkerende thema van Schaduw versus Licht. Niet alleen vechten onze helden om de verborgen waarheid aan het licht te brengen, ze moeten ook als echte ninja’s vanuit de schaduw vechten. Farah en Tomasoa hebben op persoonlijk vlak nog wat lijken in hun kast liggen. Beiden moeten de schaduwen uit hun leven onder ogen zien. Het is niet verwonderlijk dat termen als schaduwteam, schaduwmeester en schaduwspel in de tekst terug te vinden zijn. Ook omschrijvingen van duistere persoonlijkheden zoals minister Lombard bevestigen dit beeld: “Radjen zag dat er ook iets onheilspellends in de ogen school, alsof iemand anders er stiekem doorheen keek meekeek, vanuit een schemer waar het naar een muf soort eenzaamheid rook.’

Schaduwvechters is een spannende en complexe actiethriller over goed en kwaad, met levendige helden die je hart stelen. Dit boek is zeker aan te raden als je houdt van ingewikkelde plots met meerdere verhaallijnen. Voor een beter begrip kun je beter eerst het eerste deel lezen.

With 'The Angel In the Shadows', I hoped that maybe I should try the 'Heartland' trilogy again, and maybe this time the story telling would get into it's stride. Farah Hafez is still on the run following the events of Book 1 -this can be read as a stand alone but I would recommend reading them in order-and is a more well developed character .
This time, she is on the run from a Russian Oligarch after exposing an internationally run crime syndicate. She and her friends are determined to bring this corruption into the light if only they can stay alive long enough...
Where I found the first book overly complex, this was more linear but the constant recaps which enable a new reader to get into the story made it frustrating. The characters of Farah and Paul were more developed but at the same time they were often so annoying I wished someone would actually just catch them to shut them up. I would describe reading this book like eating a burger with an erstwhile vegetarian -it puts you off your food and makes you feel guilty for even having the idea that anything you are doing is right. The earnest nature of their determination to do right is annoying at times but I did enjoy this more than Book 1, but not holding my breath for Book 3-sorry it just is me and my expectations of a book, rather than the writer. I am sure that those who love political thrillers will adore the 'Heartland Trilogy'

Uit. Dit boek is niet zo goed als het eerste deel van de trilogie. Op het einde was het wel spannend, maar ik vind dat het boek te veel verhaallijnen bevat. En omdat je steeds switcht tussen de verschillende hoofdpersonen kom je nooit helemaal in het verhaal. Ook vond ik het soms lastig om bepaalde personen die zelf niet aan het woord komen maar wel genoemd worden uit elkaar te houden. Ik denk dat als de schrijver bij het eerste deel het hele Rusland gebeuren eruit had gelaten en zich alleen had gericht op het verhaal rondom het aangereden jongetje het ook een goed boek was geweest. Nu waren er wel erg veel verhaallijnen. Omdat de meeste daarvan niet opgelost waren in het eerste deel, moest er wel een tweede deel komen. Dat maakt wel dat het erg lastig is om dit boek los te lezen. Ik raad iedereen aan om eerst deel 1 te lezen, want anders mis je toch wel veel informatie. Ondanks dat ik dit boek iets minder vind ga ik toch het derde deel lezen. Ik ben te nieuwsgierig naar Farahs verleden. Ik hoop dat dat boek mij beter ligt.

This is the second book in the series, it’s not a short or quick read at nearing 500 pages but I found it less complex than the first book. It could easily be read on its own as there is a lot of re capping which I found a little frustrating. Another well written book the pace is good although in such a long book it does slow at times. The characters are well portrayed & have plenty of depth. I look forward to the final part of the trilogy

This is the second novel in Walter Lucius’ The Heartland Trilogy. I have not read the first book in the series, Butterfly on the Storm, but I followed the story no problem as there is plenty of back story to fill in what is happening.

Journalist Farah Hafez has been kidnapped and is forced to give her support to a terrorist group on camera when a young girl’s life is threatened. This leads to her becoming one of the most wanted people in the world!

This is a very dark thriller, which is fast paced, but you really need to pay attention to follow what is happening. The characters are fascinating, as are the countries we visit throughout the story.

I really enjoyed this action packed story, so will be looking out for more from Walter Lucius.

Angel in the Shadows by Walter Lucius a four-star read that could leave you cold. This is the second book in the Heartland Trilogy and I would advise you to read them in order, this book seems darker than the first, but it could just be the place I’m in at the moment, that being said I enjoyed this one much more than the first book in the series. If you like your books fast paced and filled with action then you can’t go wrong with this, there is drama a plenty and interquel in the best way possible with all of the different characters vying for your attention.

You probably need to have read Butterfly on the Storm first as this is a continuation of the story. The investigation takes Farah and her cohorts to Russia, South Africa and Indonesia as well as remaining in the Netherlands. I found this a bit slow to begin with but the pace soon picked up and I was absorbed in the plot.

In 2013 debuteerde Walter Lucius, een pseudoniem voor Walter Goverde, met De vlinder en de storm, het eerste deel van de Hartland-trilogie en in dat jaar bekroond met de Schaduwprijs en een jaar later genomineerd voor de Diamanten Kogel. Het was meteen een groot succes, want de publicatierechten werden al meteen aan diverse landen verkocht en in Frankrijk is het boek zelfs uitgeroepen tot de vier beste thrillers van dat land. Drie jaar later, in 2016, verscheen de langverwachte opvolger Schaduwvechters, die opnieuw een internationale setting heeft.

In Moskou wordt journaliste Farah Hafez gedwongen om te verklaren dat ze bij een gijzelingsactie betrokken is. Ze weet naar Jakarta te ontvluchten, maar staat wel op de lijst van internationaal gezochte terroristen. In haar nieuwe toevluchtsoord gaat ze door met haar onderzoek naar de criminele activiteiten van oligarch Vladimir Lavrov. Haar collega en vriend Paul Chapelle helpt haar daarmee, maar wel vanuit een ander continent. Ondertussen loopt het onderzoek naar de aanrijding op een Afghaans jongetje ook nog steeds en hoofdinspecteur Radjen Tomasoa en zijn collega Esther van Noordt houden zich hiermee bezig. En beide zaken blijken met elkaar verbonden te zijn.

Het verhaal in Schaduwvechters gaat verder waar het in De vlinder en de storm is geëindigd, hoewel er eerst nog een korte herhaling van wat er gebeurd is aan voorafgaat. Ondanks dit gegeven is het op zich goed te doen om het tweede deel van de Hartland-trilogie afzonderlijk te lezen, maar het is niet aan te raden. Er is namelijk een overduidelijke link naar het voorgaande deel en aan het eind zal blijken dat er ook alweer een opzet is voor het derde en laatste. Gedurende de plot wordt regelmatig teruggekomen op wat er al gebeurd is en zonder deze kennis kun je toch het gevoel krijgen essentiële zaken te missen. De trilogie op volgorde lezen is dus het verstandigst.

Schaduwvechters heeft drie verschillende verhaallijnen, maar eigenlijk ook weer niet. Ieder verhaal speelt zich op een andere locatie af, heeft een andere protagonist, maar streeft uiteindelijk wel hetzelfde doel na: de ontmaskering van de gezamenlijke ‘vijand’. Het is dus overduidelijk dat de subplots onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn. Ook nu is de schrijfstijl van Lucius bijzonder beeldend en aanschouwelijk, de lezer kan zich precies voor de geest halen wat de personages door- en meemaken, maar ook bij de beschrijvingen van de diverse locaties kan de lezer zich een goede voorstelling maken.

De opzet van het verhaal is identiek aan dat van het eerste deel, het is onderverdeeld in vijf delen en ieder deel heeft een aantal korte en minder korte hoofdstukken, opnieuw afwisselend vanuit het perspectief van de diverse personages. Deze personages zijn wat verder uitgewerkt en over de nieuwe komt de lezer ruim voldoende te weten om zich een beeld van hen te vormen. Hierdoor is het niet zo heel erg moeilijk om meteen al verbondenheid met hen te voelen, althans met de goedwillenden. Hafez is in dit verhaal trouwens iets minder prominent aanwezig dan in het vorige, maar dat maakt het er niet minder interessant op. Een uitgebreidere rol is weggelegd voor Tomasoa en daarom leert de lezer hem op een andere manier kennen, en die valt zeker niet tegen.

Lucius heeft met Schaduwvechters opnieuw een goed doordacht verhaal geschreven, dat van begin tot eind blijft boeien en ruim voldoende spannende momenten heeft. Het doet in ieder geval uitzien naar het laatste deel van de trilogie, waarvan de deur in het laatste hoofdstuk al enigszins op een kier gezet is.

3.5 sterren. Deel twee van een trilogie. Ik ben vooral gecharmeerd van het karakter Radjen Tomasoa; hopelijk komt die in deel drie nog terug!
Zonder meer een boeiend verhaal, met zo nu en dan vrij extreme omstandigheden voor de hoofdpersonen Farah en Paul. In een Mission Impossible film zouden sommige scènes niet misstaan.

This is the second novel in the author’s Heartland trilogy, the first title in the series being Butterfly on the Storm, which I reviewed here: [https://bit.ly/2PocTGL]. The Dutch author has been compared with Stieg Larsson, and certainly there’s similarities between this series and Larsson’s Millennium series.

Angel in the Shadows starts precisely where the previous title closed and continues with that title’s labyrinthine plot of international corruption. At heart, the story is of a Russian oligarch, Valentin Lavrov, who uses his power and wealth to corrupt people around the world in pursuit of greater riches and power.

While the protagonist of the series is investigative journalist Farah Hafez, there’s a strong supporting cast, including her friend and fellow journalist Paul Chapelle, and Dutch Detective Radjen Tomasoa. Each of these lead their own investigations, Paul Chapelle’s linked to that of Hafez, that of Radjen Tomasoa a separate strand. There’s an equally large cast of villain’s.

In the previous novel, an Afghan boy dressed in girls’ clothing, makeup and jewellery was the victim of a hit and run on a deserted street on the outskirts of Amsterdam. Hafez starts to investigate, immediately guessing that the boy is a victim of Bacha Bazi, an afghan tradition of dancing boys who often fall prey to paedophiles. This leads her to uncover a paedophile ring, at the centre of which is a powerful Dutch politician, finance Minister Ewald Lombard. This in turn leads her to uncovering the wider corruption of Valentin Lavrov. In Angel in the Shadows, Hafez continues her work, which takes her to Indonesia.

I gave Butterfly on the Storm four out of five stars and I do recall really liking that novel, but for some reason Angel in the Shadows did not impress me so much. To be sure there’s a lot to like about this book. It’s settings are vividly described and brought to life, it’s characters well drawn, and its tale of corruption, oligarchs, and Russian undermining of foreign powers is nothing if not current. But unlike the last novel, there’s something more formulaic about the sequel. High octane thrillers which have their characters trotting the globe are nothing new, and when done well, are an exciting read. Butterfly on the Storm achieved this, but I felt Angel in the Shadows was not so successful and that the author was trying to hard to have his characters travel to locations new. Also, things which didn’t bother me in the last book did this time around. Farah Hafez is an adherent of Pencak Silat, the Indonesian martial art, and while in the previous book it was an interesting feature of her character, in this novel the sections where she met a Pencak Silat master in Indonesia just felt like filling. In fact, weirdly this novel felt too long, despite it being shorter than the last (the paperback of Butterfly on the Storm is 528 pages, while Angel in the Shadows is 464).

I think the main reason I liked Butterfly on the Storm so much in comparison to Angel in the Shadows is because in the first novel there were some bold set pieces which really blew the reader away. The initial set up of the child victim of Bacha Bazi was striking and deeply disturbing, while later there are some explosive moments, quite literally. Towards the end of the novel, there is a massive set piece on a motorway, which results in a huge pile up. This is a scene that needs to be read to be believed and really makes the novel soar. Angel in the Shadows has none of this and while there are some moments of great drama, even some surprising and shocking moments, the novel just seemed pedestrian by comparison.

In conclusion, to me Angel in the Shadows suffers from second book syndrome. There is a silver lining however. Unlike Butterfly on the Storm, which ended on a cliff hanger, from where Angel in the Shadows started, this second novel ties up all loose ends. This means the third and final instalment in the series can start from a fresh page. No doubt the characters will find that the conspiracy and corruption continues (and there are hints of this in Angel in the Shadows) and that they still have much work to do. Hopefully then, in crafting a novel that doesn’t have to continue so directly from what’s gone before, the author can produce something that meets the expectations left from the first in the series.

Het was lang wachten op deel 2 van de Hartland trilogie, Schaduwvechters van Walter Lucius. Na in 2013 vele prijzen te hebben gewonnen in binnen en buitenland met deel 1, De Vlinder en de Storm waren de verwachtingen hooggespannen. Lezend in interviews met Walter Lucius haast ook te hoog voor hemzelf. Uiteindelijk heeft het ruim twee jaar geduurd voor Schaduwvechters in de boekhandel lag.

Schaduwvechters volgt onmiddellijk op het einde van De Vlinder en de Storm. Het is als het ware of je verder leest in het volgende hoofdstuk. Er is een internationaal opsporingsbericht uitgevaardigd voor journaliste Farah Hafez voor haar vermeende aandeel in een gijzelingsactie in Moskou. Ondertussen wordt zij zelf ook gegijzeld en gedwongen zich uit te spreken voor het regime van president Poetin. Paul Chapelle probeert samen met de Russische journaliste Anya met alle mogelijke middelen Farah`s onschuld te bewijzen, maar de corrupte praktijken in Rusland maken dit zeer lastig.

Uiteindelijk weet Farah te vluchten naar Jakarta, waar ze haar onderzoek naar de Rus Valentin Lavrov, een schatrijke crimineel en CEO van AtlasNet (een energieconcern) voortzet. Wederom op afstand gesteund door Paul Chapelle. Ondertussen zijn er in Amsterdam ook ontwikkelingen volgend op de gebeurtenissen in De Vlinder en de Storm. Twee rechercheurs, Radjen Tomasoa en Esther bijten zich vast in het achterhalen van de waarheid over de aanrijding van het Afghaanse jongetje Sekander.

De setting van het verhaal in zowel Moskou, Amsterdam en Jakarta is levensecht. Walter Lucius is er in
geslaagd een internationale sfeer te scheppen in het boek. Niet alleen met de locaties, maar zeker ook met de wereldwijde problemen van jihad en corruptie. De beschrijvingen van de locaties en omstandigheden is gedetailleerd en zeer beeldend. Je voelt je als het ware zelf staan op het plein in Jakarta tijdens de demonstraties of op de vlucht door Moskou. Dit geeft Schaduwvechters echt een prettige extra dimensie. In het nawoord wordt een flink aantal personen hiervoor bedankt, maar het is toch Walter Lucius die met woorden een mooi verhaal heeft geschreven.

De combinatie van de actualiteit en het onverwachte gedrag van mensen creëert volop spanning in Schaduwvechters. Het boek kan omschreven worden als een actiethriller met een flinke dosis psychologie. De spanning is afwisselend in de psyche, maar zeker ook fysiek. Dit maakt het een heerlijke pageturner om te lezen. Schaduwvechters is boeiend vanaf bladzijde tot de laatste en eigenlijk nog verder, want het verhaal is zeker nog niet klaar.

Zeer zorgvuldig gaat Walter Lucius met zijn personages en hun gevoelens om. Hij neemt de tijd om de nieuwe karakters bij de lezer te introduceren, zodat er zich een beeld van ze kan worden gevormd. Niet alleen uiterlijk, maar vooral innerlijk. Hun gevoelens en gedachten zijn de drijfveer in Schaduwvechters.

Het is raadzaam om eerst De Vlinder en de Storm te lezen. Meerdere malen wordt er in Schaduwvechters verwezen naar eerdere gebeurtenissen. Zeker in de Amsterdamse verhaallijn met het onderzoek.

Vanwege haar vermeende betrokkenheid bij een gijzelingsactie in Moskou wordt journaliste Farah Hafez gezocht door de internationale veiligheidsdiensten. Ze vlucht met behulp van vrienden naar Jakarta waar ze haar onderzoek naar criminele praktijken van ,een Russische oligarch, genaamd Lavrov, voortzet. Haar collega Paul Chapelle vindt in Moskou en Johannesburg nieuwe bewijzen van deze misdadige organisatie, met als gevolg dat ze er steeds meer gebeten op raken tot het uiterste te gaan, zodat ze aan Lavrov’s praktijken een einde kunnen maken .

Het internationale netwerk van Lavrov die jonge jongetjes ronselt voor vermaak is tevens verantwoordelijk voor de Amsterdamse hit-en-run-actie op een Afghaanse jongen. Een Nederlandse minister is bij deze zaak betrokken. De chauffeur van de minister heeft een verklaring afgelegd over die avond maar wordt later hangend in een strop gevonden-. Het onderzoek loopt vast.

“Schaduwvechters” is het tweede deel in de Hartland Trilogie. In het eerste deel “De vlinder en de storm” speelt Farah Hafez voornamelijk de hoofdrol. In Schaduwvechters is ze minder prominent in beeld, maar daar heeft de spanningsboog niet onder geleden. Die blijft strak staan. Haar mannelijke collega, die ze vanuit haar jeugd kent, heeft een belangrijke rol in dit boek. Door zijn ontdekkingen krijgt het verhaal nieuwe wendingen die zorgen dat je als lezer steeds weer wordt verrast.

In Amsterdam houden hoofdinspecteur Radjen Tomasoa en zijn collega Esther van Noordt zich bezig met een moord op een man die een belangrijke getuige is voor hun onderzoek op de hit-en-run-actie ten aanzien van de Afghaan.

Het verhaal is opgebouwd in vijf delen. In elk deel komen verschillende verhaallijnen aan bod, die tezamen een eenheid vormen. Walter Lucius heeft zich goed in zijn personages verdiept die allen met veel tegenslag te maken krijgen, wat voor de nodige spanning en actie zorgt. De actiescènes zijn fraai beeldend geschreven, waardoor het verhaal goed gaat leven.

“Schaduwvechters” is een krachtig en bondig geschreven boek, waarin continu van alles in ontwikkeling is. Hierdoor blijf je als lezer geboeid tot en met de laatste letter. Het boek is een lust om te lezen, een parel voor in je boekenkast.

I never quite bonded with "Angel in the Shadows". I think part of that comes from the difference to my expectations - this book has many action qualities to it - something I often enjoy but I never quite get the deep satisfaction from a dark and mysterious thriller. And that's what I was missing. It promises so much, and it tries hard to deliver, but ultimately it's never satiating enough for me.

There's so much going on at the start of the book I just couldn't get invested in what was happening. Essentially two plots unfold, one which ties the trilogy together, and one which I can't really figure out the purpose of. A shame, since I found that secondary storyline more interesting. The characters had a great deal of potential and there was a clever mystery. Those were the chapters I enjoyed most and wanted more from. That's not to knock the trilogy story - the characters here also have potential, but the plot feels a more predictable political thriller; it would work well as a solo story, but it feels overshadowed by the other thread here.

Which brings me back to that sense of wanting more. The book felt like it underdelivered - a cast with huge potential that could've had me hanging on every word never explored the depth on offer. Plots that I would've happily sunk into were fighting for space and kept switching before I could be enthralled. This hope and promise does leave me somewhat disappointed, which I have a hunch is unfair. There were moments I saw sparkles of that potential realised and my hopes soared, but it never really developed and I wonder if I'm being hard on the book. My disappointment less about the quality of the book, which I think is pretty good, and more about the expectations I had for a different story. One I can still see flickering in the background but never quite reaching.

If you want a fast-paced political action-thriller I think this will make a great read. It certainly leans far more on those traits than anything else and I think it does them pretty well. It's good at what it does, it just didn't do what I expected.

Excellent follow up to Butterfly on the Storm, part of the Heartland Trilogy.

Farah Hafez is a wonderful female role model, feisty, brave, flawed and driven to uncover the truth about the shocking accident that has left a young boy fighting for his life. As a journalist, she is exposed to the terrible events that led up to the accident, and in this book, she delves further into the dark world of child abuse and corruption at the highest levels of the Dutch government.

To make things worse, Farah has been used as a pawn in a so-called terrorist plot and has to flee for her life. The author weaves a fabulous story that is full of conspiracy theories that stretch from South Africa to Russia to Indonesia. The other unlikely hero is Paul Chapelle, a fellow journalist that has linked the villain of the story, Valentin Lavrov, too many events, including the hostage situation that led to Farah fleeing to Indonesia to escape capture.

Will Farah be able to prove her innocence?

The story is very complex and has many subplots that all weave together, but the author cleverly links them all together and also gives a little background, referring back to his first book, so that the story stands alone. You do have to concentrate to keep up with all the detail, but this does not detract from the story.

I loved the detailed descriptions of the various countries and the very detailed character development that continues throughout the book. As mentioned, this is the second book in the trilogy, and although the first book provides a more in-depth look at the backgrounds of the main characters, it is not essential to have read the first book.

A thoroughly entertaining, edge of your seat read, and I look forward to the next instalment.

Farah Hafez is ondergedoken bij een Russische journaliste nadat een filmpje van haar viraal gegaan is waarin ze haar sympatie betuigt aan een terroristische groepering. Ze kan niet terug naar Nederland, maar ook in Rusland is ze haar leven niet zeker.
Er wordt jacht op haar gemaakt. Ze ontsnapt met een nieuwe identiteit naar Indonesië, waar ze in een andere brandhaard terechtkomt, veroorzaakt door dezelfde man, Lavrov.
De Russische journaliste Anya zoekt in Rusland naar bewijzen, Farah in Indonesië en Paul Chapelle moet terug naar Zuid-Afrika om daar bewijzen in ontvangst te nemen. Alle drie doen ze dat met gevaar voor hun leven.

In Nederland wordt ondertussen nog altijd verder gezocht naar de dader van de aanrijding van een Afghaanse jongen, midden in een bos, in het donker. Twee andere rechercheurs houden zich ermee bezig en beseffen dat er iets groots aan de hand is. Ze moeten hun bevindingen geheim houden, op eigen houtje werken want ze worden langs alle kanten tegengewerkt.
Komt het ooit tot een proces van de dader en hoe zit het met het kinderpornonetwerk waar het allemaal om draait?

My first read of 2019. I've given it 4-stars on here (as I can't see how to make it 3.5!)

This is apparently the second book of a trilogy - I wasn't aware of that fact when I read this book, and haven't read the previous one. With hindsight, I think the backstories of some of the main characters might have been explained fully in the previous novel; however this book can be read as a standalone.

I quite enjoyed this pacy thriller - it's definitely a page-turner. However, I found parts of it a little predictable - almost as if it was written with being turned into a TV series in mind.

The book is set in multiple locations - switching between Russia, Amsterdam, South Africa, Indonesia - and has multiple strands and characters that are all interconnected in the end. I didn't warm to some of the characters (Farah for instance) but liked the interaction between the detectives.

I found some aspects of the ending somewhat ambiguous, so I guess I'll be reading the next instalment!

This is a fast paced dark thriller of a book that at first seems confusing. I later discovered that it is the second part of a trilogy but reads well as a stand-alone story ( I shall look out for the final part however)
Farah Hafez is a journalist of Afghan heritage who is investigating worldwide corruption involving a Russian oligarch The novel starts with her being held hostage in a siege of a college and then pledging alliegence to the terrorists : in order not to be responsible for a young girls death off camera. This pledge leads her to become a fugitive as she immediately goes straight to the top of the international most wanted lists. Her story is interwoven with that of Paul Chapelle ( possibly an ex-lover) another investigative journalist and also that of Inspector Radjen Tomasa who is currently looking at the hit and run of a young Afghan boy.
The story gathers pace and all the constituent parts are woven together cleverly - you can imagine it being made into a tv series at some point.
