I so enjoy Shelly Smith’s books, despite their age. Mixed feelings about this one. Didn’t like the first couple of chapters and almost gave up. The main character seemed to suddenly morph into someone else. Anyway, it got better, but all in all, the characters weren’t believable and I can’t see how a fling would lead to the events that unfurled. I don’t believe anyone would risk everything for someone they have so little feeling for. They didn’t even have a great sexual connection. So why bother?
I do like the writing style, funny in parts!
Gosh, all her books could do with a good proofread! They’re littered with errors, £ signs and all sorts. There’s also an extremely offensive and racist description of the colour black in this one, which should be taken out. Yes, the books are dated, but whoever is publishing them and earning money from them should deal with those things.
Couple years ago I came across a bunch of vintage books for sale at a garage sale. I love the idea of a vintage book and the connection it gives me to the past. There is also the chance that you will find a true diamond in the rough, not one that was made into a film you’ve seen but just a random old story from the past. This was the last of these books I had to read and, looking back, I’m sad to report that they were unremarkable and a couple were pretty bad.
Including this one. Going by the cover and the claim that it was a “novel of suspense”, I went into this one with some optimism - only to be crushed. There is not one iota of suspense in this book. Pretty average tale helped only by the interesting premise of a lady’s affair with the hired help right in the home where she lives with her husband. But, there’s nothing doing.
I know that Smith wrote a series of books with a detective and then switched to more psychological “mysteries.” This wasn’t much of a mystery to me. So, am hoping to be able to catch a novel by this author that is one with the detective. Full disclosure- I’m really not into watching people and their neurosis’s and doldrums.
