The howlers are eating each other. What is left of humanity has a chance to breathe at last. Each group that forms has to consider how they will begin anew. They must come together on how to take care of the remaining monsters, grow food, teach kids, and deal with their dead…or fall apart in the pitted wasteland left to them by the zombie apocalypse.
Can humanity get it right this time? Or will the last human become The Last Zombie?
Jay Norry, aka J.K. Norry, is the multi-genre author of several books, many blog posts, and a few short stories.
He wrote his first book in his early twenties. After sitting on the manuscript for almost ten years, Stumbling Backasswards Into the Light was finally published via a small press in January 2012. Jay wrote his next book shortly after, and published Demons & Angels through his own company (Sudden Insight Publishing) in December 2014.
Since then he's written a lot of books. And he doesn't seem to be able to stop.
It's not a bad problem to have.
Jay lives in the hottest part of Northern California with his wife Dawn and their furry little princess Ximena. While he spends most of his hours on the side porch writing books, he also enjoys ticking items off his unending to-do list, drinking good scotch, and dreaming up future home projects.
Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book because I was in it. No really, that's one of the fun things about this series is that Norry used writers, artists, musicians, and all kinds of folks from the real world to appear as alternate versions of themselves in this uniquely philosophical zombie apocalypse tale.
And with that out of the way, wow! This was definitely a new direction as far as apocalypse scenarios go. It's obvious the author put a lot of thought into not just how this story would play out, but why. As was mentioned in my review of the first book, mother nature is fed up and unleashes the zombie virus on the world basically to get rid of us. This book picks up after almost all of humanity has been wiped out and follows a few different groups of survivors on their very different paths.
Now, I do have to say, this book, despite having real people named as characters, is very obviously fiction. In fact, the least believable part was the character who shared my name. I don't know who she was, but she did a bang up job of fighting to survive where as real me, well... Not so much. (Kudos though to Jay for having my character comment on what my actual contingency plan is)
If you're looking for something that will entertain you and make you think, this is the book for you.
I enjoyed reading Zombie Zero: The First Zombie which deals with the downfall of humanity, and went straight on to read Zombie Zero: The Last Zombie This book continues the story and follows distinct groups of humans and their different ways to survive, repopulate and deal with the last remaining zombies... as well as other humans.
Will humanity get it right this time or will history repeat itself again?
This pair of books are enjoyable and thoughtfully written.
