Rescue!

Imagine that you’re Sara, a shrimpy sixteen-year-old girl. Suddenly, you’re face to face with a group of tough teenage boys cruelly abusing a tiny six-pound bear.

Outraged, you confront them. And, unexpectedly, you find yourself the excited new owner of Pepper Bear, a furry ball of trouble reputed to “scratch like a dozen wildcats.”

Pepper Bear helps paint the house, tows two bikes and their riders into a hornet’s nest, and adopts a neighbor’s prize chicken as its own pet.

Yet, as sure as Pepper Bear can sniff out trouble, children who read this delightful adventure story will learn the true meaning of the words love, patience, and acceptance.

“The heartwarming story of a little orphaned bear that will make you laugh and cry.”

VERALEE WIGGINS has been a favorite of Heartsong readers for a long time. With nine Heartsongs to her credit, she said, 'I want my readers to know that God loves them much more than any earthly person does, and desperately wants them to love Him, too. I want to show that following Him is the best and happiest way to go.' Through her books, she wanted to increase the reader's faith.

VeraLee went home to be with the Lord on December 24, 1995, and will be sadly missed. She has since been inducted into the Heartsong Hall of Fame.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a [mostly] happy change from the books my family has been reading at family worship. Though, if you're going to read this to kids, make sure to kinda skip over the first chapter as there are some graphic things going on in that chapter (there are boys torturing Pepper as a cub and it's really heartbreaking).

The reason I rated this book four stars and not five was mainly because of the ending. It wasn't really sad (the bear, Pepper, does NOT die), but it was still sad.
