These are neat little adaptations of the movies (I read the first one too). They show you the spells as well as the characters' commentary on events, something you don't really get in the films or (typically) from the standard novelization.

Loved it so much!! It was so interesting, even in Uma's POV. I wished it had more pictures of them all though.

Mal’s Spell Book 2
There were some interesting spells in this. I can definitely see me using “The Reading Spell”. It would be like having The Flash’s power. I can see me using “Spell for A Feast” to give me some cooking skills. “The Truth Serum” would have come in handy when I was dating. The “Spell for a New Beginning” would REALLY be useful because sometimes day to day life does tend to feel just a little bit monotonous where I’m from. Then who doesn’t want more wealth (“The Incantation for Wealth”).

But there was some things that didn’t need to be in this. Fairy Tales (and I don’t care what versions) don’t need to be in Maleficent’s grimoire. I didn't even read them. Spells YES! Herbs YES! Crystals YES. Fairytales NO. Can you really tell me you see Maleficent reading these? Uma’s commentary also didn’t need to be in Maleficent’s grimoire. Uma had her own SEPARATE book (Uma’s Wicked Book for VKS) and most of what was in this one was in that one. So, it did NOT need to be repeated.

I do however tend to feel the slightest bit bad for the Isle Kids because they’ve gotten so use to just an EXTREMLY UNACCEPTABLE way of living that even when they get something better, they still miss rotten food, poor living conditions, foul smelling clothes. I know if I had to live on this toxic dump of an island and someone took me away from that there is NO WAY in Hades, I’d be sitting around reminiscing about it.

And in the same vein as that this also (and I’ve said this about the last one) doesn’t need commentary from Mal, Evie, Carlos, Uma and Jay. Again WHY? This is a SPELL BOOK! Let it be a SPELL BOOK. Isn’t that the name of it MAL’S SPELL BOOK. But maybe they should have called it MALEFICENTS SPELL BOOK. Then there’s a book called Mal’s Diary and it has all her thoughts (I’m guessing because I haven’t gotten to that one yet). I’d just rather this would have stuck to that.

There were some parts I could relate to. Like the part where Chad keeps coming into Carlos’s room to borrow his 3 D printer and they’re all giving him advice how to stand up to people. I thought about how sometimes you have SHOW people because sometimes they act like they don’t hear you when you try to assert yourself.

But then some parts were just ridiculous. Like how Ben gets mad at Mal for using the spell book. I was thinking so, let me get this straight. He wasn’t in the least lil bit mad that she DECIEVED him by tricking him into falling in love with her but he’s mad at her for using a spell to be the kind of person that’s trying to make HIM look good. RIIIGHT. I get it. He’s upset that she felt like she couldn’t be herself and had to use magic, but couldn’t he have just -oh I don’t know- TOLD HER THAT? He saw she was TRYING and should have understood how much pressure she was under. I’m just not impressed with Ben.

And then at the end of the book, I thought ARE YOU CRAZY? I would NOT give up MY MOTHER (evil or not)’s spell book. FOR WHAT? If it were tempting me to use it in ways that would harm someone else, then yes. I wouldn’t need the temptation. But not all these spells were “evil” and Mal didn’t use not one spell to hurt anyone. She turns her hair blond. She makes a feast for a picnic she forgot about. She used the truth spell but only to HELP Carlos and he ASKED.’-

Rating: 6 There ARE some good things here but again this needed to STICK TO THE NAME and stop trying to be everything but!

This was a very cute book and I felt like the timing was for the most part consistent. I felt like there were however a few times where the timing of the events in the movie did not match with the timing of the writings in this book. I also feel like maleficent would have had notes since she had previously owned this book. When uma takes the book I feel like she would have written on the front pages as well to respond to what everyone else had written instead of just using the next pages. I also believe that Carlos, Evie, and Jay would have commented more on what Mal wrote in the book while she was in the Isle before they met up. My last thing is that I feel like in the movie Mal never let anyone see her spell book and most of these times when they are writing they are in public places so I don't feel like they would have all written in the book, along with the fact of I don't think Mal would have let them use the book that often. Sorry this is actually last, I think that when Uma was writing in the back she would have for some of it been writing in the car with Ben so I feel like if he saw the spell book he would have been mad at her, then again he was spelled so maybe not. OKAY THIS IS REALLY LAST, I think that there would have been more spells in the book since it was maleficent and that there would have been some spells that she uses in ber movie. This is everything that I can remember but overall this was a cute book and if you love descendants two I think give it a shot as long as you are not too picky about the timeline.

‘Mail’s Spell Book 2’ offers the inside thoughts of the Core 4 during Descendants 2.
Mal is struggling with being Ben’s ‘perfect’ girlfriend, and years for her days on the isle when she was feared and could stomp around wearing leather and scaring people. She writes in her spell book about her feelings, hoping the others will notice and understand, however they are all busy writing about their own mini issues and their new great lives in Auradon.
In this book, Mal (Maleficent’s daughter), Evie (Evil Queen’s daughter), Carlos (Cruella De Vil’s son) and Jay (Jafar’s son) use Maleficent’s old spell book as a journal about their experiences and their new lives in Auradon. When stolen by Uma (daughter of Ursula), the book is filled with notes about piracy and Uma’s plot to pay back Mal.
Also includes all spells from Descendants 2 with annotations on spells and recipes from the core 4.

Another adorable spell book/VK journal! i love getting a closer look at all their feelings and emotions during the events of the movie… it’s very sweet seeing them interact with each other more. I love the twist of having Uma write in it at the end. The only thing that didn’t quite make sense is how they were all writing in it from the beginning and seemed fine with it, when in the movie they didn’t know she still had it until later, at which point they were disapproving. But I’m okay with it because I like seeing them all write about things from the start. Although I don’t know why they all acted like they didn’t understand what Mal was going through that whole time when she was literally writing all about it? It’s not a big deal though haha just a plot hole I guess. I will say I really loved when Uma talked about Gil and Harry, those details on their friendship were sooo precious!

On the one hand, this is a book of spells, but on the other most of the text is written like notes from some of the main characters, sometimes to each other or in response to teach other. Because I have seen these movies with my kids, it made sense to me, but I am not sure how someone who had never seen the second film would get it, although someone who'd seen the first film would have some spoilers here. As usual, the messages Disney is trying to convey to its young audience come through loud and clear. No one's perfect but it's better to choose good, but be yourself, etc, etc.

Also, some of the things reflect stuff that comes up in the novels written after some of the movies that are set before and in between the films.

What happened in this book was that Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jake were preparing for their first party at Auradon throughout their preparation Ursula's daughter Uma camed to Auradon to finish Mal and her friend because she said they were traitors to the villains. The main character of the book was Mal, she is very intelligent. This book did change my life because it taught me to let my imagination fly. I would recommend this book to Julia Lamport because she also loves to let her imagination fly.

Honestly, I read this book because I watched the movies and I wanted to see the vk's inside thoughts. It was a good book, but the first one's better and it was a pretty easily read. So, there is nothing wrong with, I just feel like it was an okay book, did not really change my life or anything.
