Through over 40 natural recipes tailored to your mood, they show you exactly how to transform your home into a tranquil, relaxing retreat.
With a focus on the relationship between scent and well-being, there are energizing citrus recipes, warming ginger and cinnamon preparations, relaxing lavender and soothing camomile products, allowing you to choose the perfect treatment for the desired effect. The recipes use botanical ingredients, all of which are easily sourced from the home, garden or via the internet.
This book is beautiful. It's chocka full of handmade recipes and after a week of flu some of them look really appealing right now. And so many can be made up as Xmas presents.
Going to a spa can be so expensive so not everyone can afford it so the idea of treating yourself at home is something I love the idea of and everything looks so simple. The book is full of pictures to go with the recipes.
Highly recommended and I'll be buying it for some friends for Xmas too
A trip to the spa for a bit of pampering has often been seen as an expensive, once in a while kind of treat. But, it doesn’t have to be. With Handmade Spa, cosmetic experts Juliette Goggin and Abi Righton, bring the spa day experience right to your home! There are more than forty natural recipes, enabling you to tailor what you choose to your mood, while transforming your home into a peaceful retreat of your very own. There are various aromatherapy recipes, such as energizing citrus recipes, warming ginger and cinnamon preparations, relaxing lavender and soothing chamomile selections, giving you the opportunity to choose the perfect recipe based upon the effects that you’re looking for. The recipes use botanical ingredients, all of which are easily found through a variety of sources like the internet, specialty stores, and maybe even your own garden. In fact, if you enjoy gardening, that may be a good way to incorporate a hobby you already enjoy with your newfound hobby. I really loved the idea behind this book and once I started flipping through the pages, I found myself making so many plans to create the various recipes. All of the recipes were very simple to follow and I had no problem finding the ingredients. I’m looking forward to trying more of these projects, and can really see how these would make very thoughtful gifts for things like Christmas , birthdays, or maybe even as a part of a baby shower gift, because, after all, most new mothers could use a spa day and a chance to go relax. Giving these completed projects as a gift can give her a chance to get that relaxing time to herself without necessarily having to leave her baby at home. These recipes would also make a very fun girls’ night idea. You can either have some of these prepared ahead of time or you can have the fun of working on various recipes together and then having that luxuriously relaxing spa experience. One Olof the things that I feel made things even more convenient is that the recipes are grouped together based upon the desired effect; refreshing, revitalizing, and uplifting are in a chapter together, as are warming, relaxing, and soothing. This book also teaches you about the various tools you’re going to need, the botanicals in the recipes, and some aromatherapy basics, so all in all, this is a very creative and informative book and I enjoyed it a great deal. I’m already excited about setting up a spa day with some of my friends, using the recipes from Handmade Spa!
Thank you to Juliette Goggin, Abi Righton, Quarto Publishing Group, and Netgalley for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are fully my own.
I would like to thank the publisher, Quarto Publishing Group, and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of this beautiful book.
First of all, this book is beautifully presented with beautiful photographs and a very attractive page layout and calming color scheme. The book exudes relaxation, calmness and self-care and self-love. The tools needed to make these recipes in this book are readily found in any kitchen, which makes this book very practical. Like a real spa, the author, organizes her recipes similar to a spa menu. Refreshing, Revitalizing, uplifting section has recipes such as "Revitalizing facial Cleansing Grains" and "Grapefruit Orange Body Wash" In the Warming, Relaxing, soothing, section you will find recipes such as facial masks and Sensual Body Massage Oil and Hot Oil Hair Treatment. My favorites recipes are the hot and cold soothing wheat pack and Scented candles. If you crave regeneration or balancing, you will find solace with recipes for facial stem and bath oil with flowers as an ingredients and a Regenerative Rose Facial oil recipe, which is a simple blend oils including pomegranate oil. The book also offers recipe for calming down at night and induce a restful sleep. Last but not least, she offers various recipes to help us detoxify our bodies such as face masks and soap, bath tablets and mud mask, foot scrub and herbal tea.
Instead of attending a spa only for special occasions because of the high costs, this book will really help you to bring the Spa experience at home. In these busy and information overload times, bringing the spa home will be good for our health and mind. I highly recommend this book!
This book is beautiful! Not just in appearance (but that is a big part of it) but also the subject matter, there is just something so satisfying about making your own stuff, and spa things are definitely included. Sadly I have never been to a spa, I have weird skin problems and allergies (like to aloe of all things, and that is in everything) so the idea of being pampered sounds amazing, the idea of walking away with a rash does not. Being able to treat myself to a spa day at home with things I have made and know won't irritate my skin sounds amazing. If you like DIY and pampering yourself (or making useful gifts, for that matter) then definitely read this book!
Visually, this is one of the most "feeling like going to spa" book. The photos are simply beautiful! And the logic of chapters is simply charming - after the properties of the essential oils! So we have chapters as "Refreshing, Revitalizing, Uplifting", "Warming, Relaxing, Soothing", "Regenerating, Balancing", "Calming, Restful, Sleep-Inducing" and "Detoxifying, Cleansing".
Some of the recipes looks lovely, I would certainly try some of the teas.
Personally, I would love to see more of the safety tips here concerning the essential oils (for example the pregnancy/nursing usage or suitability for children). Essential oils are very powerful and one should study their benefits/risks before putting them on - I am saying this in general, because I am super conscious about such powerful natural sources. I am also nervous about the products like Polysorbate 20, Plantapon LGC, OLIVEM 1000 and LAMESOFT PO65, as they sound "commercially" to me. I don´t know these products, maybe they are perfectly all-natural, but I prefer to go only natural (no commercially-made mixes) when making my cosmetics.
Again, these are just my personal concerns. Read the book and see for yourself!
I received an Advanced Reader Copy from NetGalley for my unbiased opinion of the book. I enjoyed the book. I thought the layout was great however only two recipes had a list of ingredients. I only was able to make Incense Powder. I am happy I can now make it from home! There is a resource product guide in the back of the book. It was helpful in purchasing the necessary ingredients without having to run all over the place to find them! I will be purchasing this book for upcoming presents this year.
**My thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group, for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**
In this age where a Spa treatment can cost a small fortune, this book gives the more cost effective way of having Spa treatments at home for a fraction of the price.
The photo's are lovely, the book is well laid out and going through the treatments there are quite a few that i am certainly looking forward to trying out at home.
So many really cool recipes in here for bringing the spa experience home. A lot of the ingredients are speciality though, so can be expensive and hard to come by.
This would be great for small home spa businesses, but many of these ingredients would not be easy to procure for your average DIY-er and gave the general impression of chemistry class.
In a very natural way, the authors provides information, tips and recipes from professional level spa. My favorite recipe is the Micellar Cleansing Water which is awesome.
