This biography of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is a comprehensive and vivid narration of his unique contribution to Mahatma Gandhi's struggle for India's freedom. Often called the 'Iron Man of India', he built the party machine through imposition of strict discipline, and as party boss, he supervised and directed the functioning of the Congress ministries post-1937 provincial elections. Patel's post-1945 role concerned India's freedom, and also marked his growing disillusionment with his own party in the failure of the Cabinet Mission parleys. He wanted to keep Jinnah out in the cold but was outmanoeuvred by Wavell who got the Muslim League into the cabinet as an equal with the Congress. Realizing that united India had become an impossible notion and the country faced chaos and total disintegration, Patel rose above all consideration to save and consolidate what would be left of India after Partition. The history of the Gandhian era cannot be properly understood unless Patel is appreciated for what he did and achieved for India. This book is an attempt to fill that gap.

The fact that I could finish such a hefty book in so short a time, should establish couple of things immediately: -
1. The book is readable.
2. It stays away from analysis, and tells the story of one of the most complex and impact-making person of twentieth century, in a very simple, naive, and one-sided manner.
Expectedly, the author devotes the major part of the book to the crowning glory of Patel: unification of the Princely States with the Indian Union. Unfortunately, the book shies away from some of the most agonising actions of Patel, making this book more a hagiography than a biography.
It vilifies Netaji Subhash Bose, and completely cuts out the role of his mentor Deshbandhu C.R. Das in freedom struggle.
It doesn't even bother itself with the trauma that Bengal had to undergo at the time of Partition.
It also remains mum about the extremely immoral attitude of Congress towards NWFP, because by that time not only Muslim League, but even Congress had tasted power, and didn't think twice about throwing the people to wolves.
Even at the time of talking about Princely States, it doesn't mention a single word about Coochbehar, the accesion of which had been assured to the Premier of Assam, by Patel, and non-happening of which had soured his attitude towards Bengal even more.

Overall, a handy piece to start any attempt to understand Patel, but absolutely NOT the most reliable or the comprehensive among all the books available on the subject.

I found this book to be a mixed read.

On one hand, this is a seminal work, because there is no little available on Sardar Patel's work and life. The level of information and his contribution in the Indian political discourse is at best cursory. The traditional establishment historians have conflated the Indian independence struggle and the years soon afterwards with Gandhiji and Nehruji. The duality has over time become gospel.

In terms of bringing out Sardar Patel's contribution to the freedom movement as well as highlighting the personality traits which made him different from the other two doyens, this is a great book. The author details out specific initiatives which Sardar led and grew within Congress hierarchy. The description of how Sardar went about integrating the Princely states after 1947 in Indian union is very strong and meticulous.

Yet this book is a cumbersome read, especially the first part of it. The author has adopted a "brute force" method to try and prove Sardar's contribution. There is a theory, which is then substantiated with incidents, often times multiple of them. And each incident is qualified by actual letters or third party commentary or media observations. Since the book follows a chronological sequence, this format becomes repetitive and difficult to appreciate after a while. Basically integrating research for the book with the book, focusing on volume rather than nuance makes it tougher.

The book also does not address the Patel - Nehru divide in a forthright manner. The differences are acknowledged but the underlying reasons and the impact on the political events are dealt with a soft hand. It may be that the author didn't want to choose one over the another. But this is a fascinating under-documented part of the freedom movement and this book misses an opportunity to fill a big void.

Despite the above shortcomings, the book paints a fair picture of Sardar Patel. Just to broaden the horizons and understanding the complexities of how Congress functioned outside of the Gandhi - Nehru influences, and Patel's shaping of these functions, this book should be read.

A fantastic insight into the role of the man who as free India's first Home Minister and Deputy PM orchestrated the herculean task of getting India as one Nation when the tendency to break up would have been so tempting for the princely states following the British withdrawal from India. Besides those provinces under direct British rule, approximately 565 self-governing princely states had been released from British suzerainty by the Indian Independence Act 1947. His life from the time how he struggled to become a barrister to his contributions during the freedom struggle show the determination and grit is this great Indian leader. A well written book if one would like to know more about the role of other great Indian leaders who helped India in its independence struggle .

This book is definitely written by someone who was a die hard devotee of Sardar Patel. He is generous in his praise. I would have liked to learn more about Sardar's failures as well.

Having said that, the above was the only qualm I could find in this otherwise magnificently written biography on one of the greatest men of modern India. Sardar Patel is not well known today and he was a man with fierce determination, bias towards action, shrewd negotiator and most importantly, a fervent patriot. This book highlights all these qualities of Sardar extensively and highlights his gigantic contributions without which modern Indian would have literally ceased to exist.

Very good book throwing light on the Sardar, without whom can't imagine how much MESS Nehru would have made of our Country if at all it existed thus far. We read so little of him in our school textbooks, but a lot on Nehru, Gandhi and others. Pseudo Communists thro' our Education Policy body have distorted our history. Savarkar is reduced to an apologist until you read Vikram Sampath's recent book. Sardar's Letter to Nehru on his handling of China annexing Tibet, Nehtru's push for their entry to UNO have all happened sofar, except Arunachal and NE States like Mizoram etc.
If only Sardar was allowed to handle Kashmir issue also by Nehru, who excluded it from States Ministry under Sardar, even that would have been settled then itself; instead it is still lingering for 70 years!

Balraj Krishna's book on Sardar succinctly takes us thro' his life early days, his handling of Congress Party, the merger of 560+ States into Union of India. EXCELLENT READ FOR ALL OF US!

If the book...

If the book is taken with a pinch of salt, it's a super fantastic read giving not just insight of Sardar Ji's life, but also his mindset that can be related as to why he's referred to as Iron Man. Some sections of this book must be certainly included as part of History in senior secondary education as we only get to read the title Iron Man of India & the one to have united the country. Atleast the very process of uniting the country has to be certainly read by every Indian.

It is a well-researched book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not a single chapter gives a dull feeling. It exposes the internal crisis at the time of transfer of power to India and also gives a detailed solutions which our legendary leaders offered. Sardar Patel’s shrewdness, high intellect, quick understanding, sharp vision, calm and composed outlook gives us not only the insights of a strong personality but also shows us what a unwavering courage and determination looks like towards the motherland. The book is very much readable, details of how smaller princely states were brought under one nation post partition has been covered concisely. A good read if you are interested to get an understanding of what role Sardar patel played during India's pre and post independence.

Did not enjoy the book as it turned out to be just a life account without any political analysis. Moreover the relation between Gandhi, Patel and Nehru was portrayed as cordial which was anything but. Moreover the part where he is criticised for dealing harshly within the party to subjugate any stand against Gandhi has been cleverly manipulated.
The constant conflict on the individual political and economic out look of a socialist Nehru and a capitalist Patel have also been subdued.
