A Travelogue recounts Sean McGrath's journey to a country steeped in mystery. Moving to Kathmandu to work for a development NGO, he buys a bike and rides along the hectic streets, navigating around wandering cows and dodging exhaust-spilling cars and trucks. The vignettes take us through the warren of streets and narrow lanes of Kathmandu, meandering past carved shrines and trekking shops, medieval temples and ancient monasteries.
McGrath describes the sublime beauty of the Himalayas. He makes his way to Bodnath stupa with its painted Buddha eyes on the gilded tower, fluttering prayer flags and murmured mantras of Tibetan monks, and checks out Pashupatinath, the sacred Hindu temple and the surrounding ashrams, observing the wandering ascetics and burning bodies on the ghats along the banks of the Bagmati river.
