Mirror, Mirror

Rate this book
Maria and her young daughter, Amber, set out for McCullenville, North Carolina. On the surface, McCullenville seems to offer all the amenities of a stereotypical Southern town along with a wonderful new, exclusive, gated community on the Northeast Cape Fear River where Maria and Amber take up residence. But what the sleepy, quiet, riverfront town also offers is a collection of interconnected characters filled with bitterness, revenge, an abundance of depravity and scandalous secrets that have been deeply buried for decades that must, somehow, be unearthed and resolved. Maria and Amber have unknowingly moved dead center into a snake pit with potentially lethal results. The colorful local sheriff, with his rigorous philosophy regarding criminal justice and his unusual force of deputies gifted in law enforcement find they are no match for the elderly minister at The First Baptist Church of McCullenville with his proclamations about the enemy meeting each of us face to face each and every day in the all revealing mirror.

This is my review for Mirror, Mirror by Margie Myers.

I just finished reading Mirror, Mirror by Margie Myers. This is a very interesting book that will throw you for a loop at the end!

We start off the story with Maria Wilkins being put in a very uncomfortable position. She has to fire Lucille “Lucy” Whitmeyer, an old battle-axe who knows everything there is to know at the Astronomy Society where they both work. Maria got the coveted promotion that she and Lucy were both wanting and consequently has to relieve Lucy of her position. Lucy LIVES for the Society and takes her loss very hard. So hard in fact, that she decides to get even. Enter Amber, Maria’s precocious little girl. Amber talks 90 miles an hour, and wants to know everything about everything! But Amber doesn’t have many friends and when her babysitter moves away, she convinces Maria to hire Lucy as a replacement. From there, it gets interesting. Maria ends up moving to a little hole-in-the-wall in North Carolina and Lucy comes along to “help with Amber”. In reality, she is coming to destroy Maria and Amber. Maria’s best friend Christina can see through it all and tries to warn Maria of the danger but she (Maria) only sees the good in Lucy.

At their new home, we meet a colorful plethora of characters! The development of character background is excellent. Mrs. Myers pulls out all the strings in bringing to life a small town with a lot of secrets. So many secrets in fact that when the unthinkable finally happens, you are left at a loss to say who is guilty. And when the truth finally comes out in the end, it’s not at all what you expected.

There are parts of this story that seem to ramble but they all tie in at the end. I wondered at several different chapters where this story was going, but after finishing it, I was astonished at how well it all came together. I would have liked to see the background with Sheriff “Bull Moose” and Maria developed more. Their story seemed to come together rather quickly. As it was, the ending was very good. I found myself laughing at several parts. This book has a lot of humor for someone that can appreciate the South in all its glory. I would definitely recommend reading Mirror, Mirror.

It was one of those books that once you've started, you can't seem to stop. It was very suspenseful! Truly a page turner. You never knew what to expect next. I like a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It was like "Can you see what I see?" Spooky!
