While spending the day with her mom and baby sibling, one little girl feels overwhelmed by the big world that surrounds her. Tall buildings, noisy cars, and hungry ducks who want to eat her lunch all make her feel like she is small. Until . . . she dreams big by being an artist, plays big and makes the winning shot, and swings big because she is brave. Soon she realizes she IS big, and nothing can stand in her way!
When you are young and must look up to see most things, the world can make you feel very small. And that is exactly why Gina Perry wrote this charming picture book. Told from the perspective of a little girl, readers spend a day in the city with her, where everything, from tall buildings, speeding bikes, noisy cars, to the long line at the hot dog stand, makes her feel small…Until she slides down the slide and feels big, or plays a fierce game of basketball. In fact, she discovers a whole host of reasons to feel big in the world. Perry’s playful illustrations and her serious message will help kids realize that they are really as big as their heart and dreams are.
I love the idea behind this book, and not just because of my vertically challenged height: just because you are tiny in size, doesn't mean you can't live big, dream big, do everything you want to do in BIG ways. Big things come in small packages, including this book. The illustrations are fun and kids will enjoy seeking the butterfly in every spread (a great interactive reading time game!).
I won a copy of this book from the author/illustrator and am gladly posting my review on my own free will, not because of her asking me to read and review. Thank you for my signed copy to treasure.
A little girl feels small in the big world around her around her and it gets her down until she climbs the ladder to the slide and realizes it's all just a matter of perspective. Going down the slide she can FLY and that's big. She also learns small people can dream big, love big and feel big just by being who they are. Delightful pictures put the reader right into the scenes with the girl and help us see what she sees and experiences.
The girl in this book is small. She rates her size in accordance to the world around her. The first sentence of the book is, "The city is big and I am small." She points out ways that show that she is small in relation to the world around her. But, then she discovers ways to feel big - by flying through the air on a swing and making big chalk drawings on the sidewalk and seeing the world from the top of a ferris wheel. She might be little in stature but she is also big and strong in other ways.
A little girl feels physically small in such a big world. And then she realizes that she can do a lot of big things because she is brave, fierce, happy and loved. And that makes her feel big.
What a great message in such a simple text. A definite addition to my school library.
For any kid who ever feels small but dreams big, this is the book for you! Gina Perry's adorable MC feels small in the big city. She even "talks small" when ordering a hot dog. Her smallness makes her sad until...she climbs a ladder and swoops down the slide all by herself. Suddenly, she feels big, dreams big, and sings big. Perry's colorful illustrations will make the smallest kids feel BIG!
The world around can make a child feel small, but her dreams and play can make her feel big. The story takes place in a busy city populated by diverse characters, and the illustrations are bright and playful. A wonderful picture book for preschoolers!
Every kid can feels small sometimes, but Gina Perry's SMALL makes you want to find the things in your life that can make you feel big! Simple text along with sweet and quirky illustrations makes for a great empowering story for people of all sizes.
This little book has a big heart! With beautiful illustrations and just the right words, a young girl finds out that she is clever and talented and big in her own little way. A great message for young readers!
I loved the progression in this book about a girl who feels small in a big city, to realizing that doing things she loves makes her feel big! Gina Perry's distinctive art style showcases bright, fun colors that readers will love looking at again and again.
A bright and bold book for any kid who is small but dreams, loves, and plays big. Children will love uncovering and following the book's details over multiple readings, especially the bright yellow butterfly who always follows the protagonist.
This book reminded me of what it felt like as a child when one moment you feel small and inconsequntial and the next carefree and indestructible. (I guess it can feel like that as an adult too.) A great book for anyone who needs to feel empowered.
This was such an empowering take on feeling big even though the world is so much bigger than you when you're a child. Perry's illustrations are so vibrant and engaging that I could feel the shift from feeling small in a big world to feeling like a big part of that big world.
I love how it appears this feisty little character is all on her own on her adventures, but upon closer inspection you will discover her mother and baby sibling are always close by in almost every picture. The illustrations are clean, bright, and imaginative. Very cute story with a BIG message.
SMALL is a sweet story (with lovely lovely artwork) that helps kids realize that having a small stature doesn't mean that you can't do big things. Uplifting and empowering!
An endearing story about a small girl who learns to live big. I especially like the tongue-sticking-out-of-the-mouth-in-concentration detail and the repeated motif of the Ferris wheel.
This is an absolutely adorable picture book about a small girl with big dreams. Definitely resonates with me! The art didn't necessarily blow me away, but it's definitely cute and suits the story.
A little girl realizes that maybe being small is just a state of mind. Perry's beautiful illustrations sets us in a city full of all kinds of people and sites. A fun read-aloud for everyone. Little readers will find the story relatable and empowering!
