Brian Moses is one of my favorite poets, and this collection is a perfect example of why. It's funny, sweet, smart, and endlessly creative and the language is a delight. Don't let the title fool you, there's magic in every single one of the poems in this book.
As someone who has never been fond of poetry I was suggested this book as a starting place and told to accompany it with YouTube videos. I have to say this was a great recommendation and was a good introduction to poetry for me.
The poems in this book cover a huge range of topics and are categorised on the contents page which is useful for finding a poem relating to a particular topic, or a whole set of poems on a topic of interest. The topics are suitable for children; school life, animals, space, historical, fantasy, parents, etc. However the topic titles are much more creative, which although fun to read, is slightly more difficult to search through.
The lovely, conversational introduction from the author which helped me understand why this collection of poems had been put together. Which, for someone unacquainted with poetry, was particular useful.
The poems range from funny to thoughtful and there is one for every mood. This does make the book accessible to everyone, and I think for all ages too.
The wonderful YouTube videos in which Brian performs (with instruments!) some of the poems, really enhanced the experience for me. It is brilliant to see how he envisioned them and a great way to ensure the correct rhythm. This is something I struggled with as I do not naturally pick up rhythm when reading from a page.
I personally would have loved to see some more pictures in the book, it just seems a bit plain when reading.
