This has been on my iPad for ages, skimming through what to read next, I kept stopping on this, the cover kept nudging me towards reading it.
I read this in a day, it pulled me in straight away, and made me love these two female characters as though they were family. Brought together by chance as they journeyed through a barren landscape trying to reach their loved ones. Where bonds were formed with other survivors along the way.
Sisters Lindsay & Lacey were taking a much needed vacation to Vegas whilst at the airport waiting in line when the first tremor hit, before a much bigger one shook the ground, the lights were the first thing to go, needing to make a quick exit they jump on one of the available trams, when a huge billowing gray cloud blocked the sky and all surrounding areas. They and other passengers were trapped above ground on the rail. That gray cloud was moving at a record speed towards their trams location, the impact took no prisoners, leaving only one survivor. Lacey.. Miraculously she'd been thrown into a small hole where she could only lie in the fetal position.
Many days and hours she held onto her dead sisters hand. Praying that other survivors or a rescue team would find her.
Torrential rain is what rescued her, making some of the rubble blocking her escape pliable enough for her to move it and escape.
What she saw on the outside was unbelievable, no people, no buildings, no landmarks. there was nothing but rubble as far as the eye could see..
Three thousand miles away from home in an unfamiliar city. Thinking the only place she could conceive to be safe would be to head towards the mountains. Running into another survivor Madison gives her hope that not all is lost.
An emotional story of two women survivors of a catastrophic nightmare that destroys the west coast of the United States, and their struggles to find their family in the east. A fast paced good read that gave me the feels in a couple of spots.
I cannot put into words how beautiful, sad, hopeful, and amazing this story is. It is 12:08 A.M. and I'm chocked up by this amazing tale of loss and love during an apocalypse that killed so many. Although the earth was covered in Ash, this is not your ordinary apocalypse story. You'll have to learn how and the reason for the massive death and destruction of the people by reading the book.
This book is about survival but not in the way that we're used to. This is not an every man for himself kind of read. In this book you actually get to see the good side of mankind during a horrible situation.
This story follows the journey of the of a woman named, Lacey. Every portion of this story has a purpose. It's a mystery that unfolds. The timing, pacing, and events in this book all have a purpose and it's all bittersweet in the most real way. I feel like I got to know and see into tge heart and mind of each character. Even the minor characters have a large impact on the twist and turns in this invigorating tell.
I went through so many emotions during this read. I'd be optimistic alongside the characters. I felt every disappointment when plans didn't turn out the way people hoped. I was excited and happy when things did came together and turn out. I was afraid and shared a few tears at times, and then I was cheering and smiling with satisfaction at other times.
I know I've recommended several books to my friends lately, but I'm putting this one above almost all the rest. This is definitely one of the best and most realistic survival apocalypse story I've read in 2016.
If you're wondering if there is any parts of this book that I didn't like, the answer was yes, but as I stated before, everything in this story has a reason behind it, and the reasons are not the dumb kind that make you roll your eyes a million times like I usually do. I only rolled my eyes a few times when the main character couldn't get the answers she asked for at the beginning. Yes, people die in this book but it's not like the other books where the die for no good reason. It's an apocalypse and everyone can't make it. I wasn't even mad because it made sense and it helped the story along.
I especially recommend this book to Nikki and Halo.
Lacey is leaving an airport when something happens. When she wakes up she finds the tramcar she was in has been severely damaged and her sister is dead. Lacey is married and so was her sister. Lacey wants to get back to her family and find out if they are all right.
She's in California at the time but what happened seems far worse than the San Andreas fault acting up. She finally escapes from the car and begins to make her way home but soon finds dead bodies all over, but they don't have bullet holes or any other obvious cause of death.
Over time she meets a woman named Madison and a 92-year-old woman in a hospital named Ruth. The plan is to find cars that are usable (no EMP) and make their way to their homes. They will have to deal with the military, an ever-decreasing temperature with snow, various military camps, continuing earthquakes, families that may have survived and remained at home or survived and heading for safety or died.
It's definitely a happy ending for everyone.
The book is extremely good. I do have a question, though, about whether or not other countries would accept refuges from the U.S. It would definitely be a strain on their economies. One of the disaster movies I saw had Mexico blocking any refugees for a while. There's also a question about whether or not other countries, if they were capable, might consider attacking what's left of the United States and taking it for themselves as it seems the vast majority of Americans are dead.
I liked this book. No zombies no war with another country. But a natural occurring catastrophe. I was intrigued. Also the US government actually steps up and tries to save people in this book which I've only seen in one other post apocalyptic story. That series is The Journal by Deborah Moore. Excellent series about a prepper. I just would like a little more depth in this book. I loved the beginning. There was more detail about what was happening to Lace. But later the story seemed to skate over time like in one chapter months would pass. I don't know how to explain it but i want more details on how she's surviving day to day.
I cannot get enough of Jacqueline Druga, I am so glad I have so many more of her books to read, no two are the same.
The story begins with Lacey, who is in a desperate position. I'm a bit claustrophobic so it immediately got my heart pounding. On top of being trapped, how terrifying it would be to believe, even if only for a short time, that you were the last living human within hundreds of miles, and possibly on earth. To know that everyone else is dead and there is no help coming.
Running into Madison gives her hope, and together they make their way across a country that has been annihilated by an unknown source to try to find their families. This is a strong and compelling story, with more than a bit of sadness, but worth every minute.
This author is a favorite of mine. Her books NEVER disappoint. And I believe this particular book is one of her best. In my opinion. I enjoy reading anything and most everything in this genre and Jacqueline writes the heck out of it. Kicks its butt and throws some heart into it. Excellent reading. It begins with a woman trapped in a tram car and lead me through every range of emotions I have throughout the story. The ending took my breath away. If you've never read any of Jacqueline Druga's books, this is a good place to start.
This is a beautiful story! Don't interpret this to mean that it's all rainbows, hearts, and flowers; this is a dark story that deals with the emotional pain of loss. But it also has a powerful and uplifting emotional component. It's beautifully written and I was hooked from the start.
Ms. Druga is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors. I've probably read 50-60 books this year and this is hands-down the best one of the bunch! I would highly recommend this book.
Compelling story. I hated to put it down. The characters were well developed and interesting. I think one of the worst things that could happen would be to be far from home when disaster struck. I empathized with the women who were driven to find home and family. I wonder if I would be have the courage to survive and struggle to get home. Thanks for the great story.
JD. has. penned a SYFY. novel. about the rebellion of Mother Earth. She finally had enough mistreatment by the humans and decided to treat the humans as a houseflies. She is successful an there are survivors. However, most of t he survivors are in the southeastern part of t he United States. The U.S. Will descend into oblivion, but will return. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
The book started strong, especially since it was unclear what had happened. However, it started to drag as they traversed across the U.S. Then suddenly the book wrapped up really quickly, too quickly. It felt odd as a reader.
I have read quite a few of this author's books. I loved the storyline of this one. Can't say a lot about it, spoilers, but I cried some reading this. I became attached to the characters and losses brought the water works. It was cathartic. Grab this book. Enjoy!
4.5 stars. Jacqueline Druga is an talented post-apocalyptic writer and never ceases to amaze. “Under the Gray Skies” is a very fast-paced, gripping read that I refused to put down. I can’t wait to continue making my way through Druga’s books and think that anyone who can’t read past a few writing mistakes here and there are just looking for holes in a fabulous piece of writing.
Jacqueline Druga writes books with characters I can relate to. I’m so glad they are singles in all their glory. The stories don’t drag on and on and loose themselves along the way. I finish a book and can hardly wait to start the next adventure and meet great new people.
Couldn't put this down. Will definitely look for more of her books. I felt like I lived through all the things that happened. The spirit and courage of the women was amazingly inspiring. Needs to be a movie or tv series!
Another great story, with a very unique end-of-the-world story line. Good characters that I grew to love and care about, it was hard to put this story down. Jacqueline Drug's has become my favorite author!
I was really impressed with this book. I did find some typos but it didn't stop me from reading it in one sitting. There seemed to be so much story and emotion squeezed into this book. The storyline was realistic. Don't pass this one by.
So satisfying to read a dystopian novel that had great characters and a interesting plot. And thank you, Jacqueline, for finishing the story. So many of these books I read and with a cliffhanger so you have to buy another book! So irritating!
I was hooked page one... A clean cut story of friendship, loss and survival. A story line all its own , I'm 70 and read many books a month. This I will never forget, I just can say enough about these two young women and their journey..
This is the second book i have read from this author. The characters are well defined and easy to emphasize with, story line is awesome, can't wait to read more of her books, well done!
By far my favorite book by this author. Never put it down once I started,my favorite parts were not being bombarded with technical gibberish. The characters brought this story to life, well done MS.Druga, well done
I have read many books about end of the world saga, And I thought this was going to be like the others , but It wasn't I won't give away the plot but I couldn't put the book down was a brilliant story
I've recently been on a Druga kick, reading about 20 of her books in the last month. For some reason I really loved the ending to this one. I actually cried a little.
This was a heartwarming story with a lot of emotion. It kept me engaged for the whole story and I had a hard time putting it down. I do recommend it for Jacqueline Druga fans. It’s one of her best.
I have read several of Jacqueline Druga's books and always enjoy them. The characters are well developed and you can really feel for them. Would recommend reading.
