Rethinking Political Islam

For years, scholars hypothesized about what Islamists might do if they ever came to power. Now, they have answers: confusing ones. In the Levant, ISIS established a government by brute force, implementing an extreme interpretation of Islamic law. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Tunisia's Ennahda Party governed in coalition with two secular parties, ratified a liberal constitution, and voluntarily stepped down from power. In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood, the world's oldest Islamist movement, won power through free elections only to be ousted by a military coup. The strikingly disparate results of Islamist movements have challenged conventional wisdom on political Islam, forcing experts and Islamists to rethink some of their most basic assumptions.

In Rethinking Political Islam, two of the leading scholars on Islamism, Shadi Hamid and William McCants, have gathered a group of leading specialists in the field to explain how an array of Islamist movements across the Middle East and Asia have responded. Unlike ISIS and other jihadist groups that garner the most media attention, these movements have largely opted for gradual change. Their choices, however, have been reshaped by the revolutionary politics of the region. The groups depicted in the volume capture the contradictions, successes, and failures of Islamism, providing a fascinating window into a rapidly changing Middle East. It is the first book to systematically assess the evolution of mainstream Islamist groups since the Arab uprisings and the rise of ISIS, covering 12 country cases. In each instance, contributors address key questions, including: gradual versus revolutionary approaches to change; the use of tactical or situational violence; attitudes toward the nation-state; and how ideology, religion, and political variables interact.

For the first time in book form, readers will also hear directly from Islamist activists and leaders themselves, as they offer their own perspectives on the future of their movements. Islamists will have the opportunity to challenge the assumptions and arguments of some of the leading scholars of Islamism, in the spirit of constructive dialogue. Rethinking Political Islam includes three of the most important country cases outside the Middle East-Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan-allowing readers to consider a greater diversity of Islamist experiences. The book's contributors have immersed themselves in the world of political Islam and conducted original research in the field, resulting in rich accounts of what animates Islamist behavior.

Shadi Hamid is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and the author of the Islamic Exceptionalism: How the Struggle Over Islam is Reshaping the World, which was shortlisted for the 2017 Lionel Gelber Prize. He is a contributing editor at The Atlantic. His previous book Temptations of Power: Islamists and Illiberal Democracy in a New Middle East was named a Foreign Affairs Best Book of 2014.

لسنوات، ظل العلماء يفترضون ما يمكن أن يفعله الإسلاميون إذا صعدوا إلى السلطة. والآن، لديهم إجابات، لكنها مربكة:

– في بلاد الشام، أقام تنظيم الدولة حكومة بالقوة الغاشمة، وطبق تفسيرًا- يراه مؤلفا الكتاب- متطرفًا للشريعة الإسلامية.

في كتاب “إعادة التفكير في الإسلام السياسي”، يجمع اثنان من كبار علماء الإسلاموية، وهما: شادي حامد ووليام مكانتس، مجموعة من المتخصصين البارزين في هذا المجال لشرح تجارب مجموعة من الحركات الإسلامية في الشرق الأوسط وآسيا.
وعلى عكس داعش والجماعات الجهادية الأخرى التي تحظى بأكبر قدر من الاهتمام الإعلامي، اختارت هذه الحركات إلى حد كبير التغيير التدريجي، غير أن السياسات الثورية في المنطقة أعادت تشكيل خياراتهم.
يُظهِر الكتاب التناقضات والنجاحات والإخفاقات التي مرَّت بها الإسلاموية، مما يوفر إطلالة مفيدة على منطقة الشرق الأوسط سريع التغيُّر. ولأنه يغطي 12 حالة قُطريّة، فإنه يعتبر أول كتاب يقيّم تطوُّر الجماعات الإسلامية الرئيسية بشكل منهجي منذ الانتفاضات العربية وصعود تنظيم داعش.
وفي كل حالة، تناول المساهمون المسائل الرئيسية التي تشمل: النهج التدريجي للتغيير مقابل النهج الثوري، واستخدام العنف التكتيكي أو الظرفي، والمواقف تجاه الدولة القومية، وكيف التفاعل بين الأيديولوجية والدين والمتغيرات السياسية.

This book is a great example of apologetic scholarship in favor of Islamic state and extremism. A quote from their book reads "Islamists are not likely to become liberals; otherwise, what would be the point." The point of what? The point of you sitting in Brookings Institute bragging with the money you received from the Islamists? Or the point of the Middle Eastern women and children living freely without the shadow of some male dominated Islam on their head? As more and more the signs of failure of political Islam will emerge in a fast paste world of technology, this type of scholarship in which the male academics talk in favor of the male terrorist will distinguish soon... Inshallah.

Nampak setiap bendera dan bendera Malaysia pada kulit buku? Apa parti Islam yang tulen di Malaysia? Sudah tentu jawapannya Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS).

Barat yang diterajui oleh Amerika sangat peka terhadap perkembangan gerakan Islam di seluruh dunia.

Sekarang bukan masanya pejuang gerakan Islam duduk selesa kononnya tiada ancaman daripada musuh dan anti Islam.

Pasca PRU-14, giliran Malaysia diuji. Serangan dan perlecehan terhadap agama Islam dari setiap penjuru dihadapi dari hari ke hari.

Saya acapkali mengamati ucapan pendiri sekali gus pemimpin Partai Majelis Syuro Muslimin Indonesia (Masyumi) dan Perdana Menteri ke-5 Republik Indonesia, Bapak M. Natsir; ''Islam beribadah, akan dibiarkan, Islam berekonomi, akan diawasi, Islam berpolitik, akan dicabut seakar-akarnya.''
