When magic spells go horribly wrong... Life for Zoe Sandoval, the future prima of the de la Paz witch clan, is not going as planned. As if being almost kidnapped by a dark warlock wasn't bad enough, Zoe’s struggling with her birthday closing in — and she still hasn’t found her destined soulmate. While searching for Prince Charming, she’s had to kiss a lot of frogs. Frustrated and at the end of her rope, Zoe takes matters into her own hands, using her magical gifts to conjure the perfect man of her dreams. But everyone knows the perfect man doesn't exist. Now the leaders of the de la Paz family must enlist the help of Evan McAllister, another clan's resident “fixer,” to take care of Zoe’s problem before the truth about both witch clans is revealed to the world. As Zoe and Evan work together to keep their families’ secrets safe, will they find that falling in love is more magical than either of them ever realized?
A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Many reams of dead trees later, she’s happy to announce that her debut novel, Fringe Benefits, was published by Pink Petal Books on April 8, 2010. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the new journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Her paranormal novella, Playing With Fire, was released on August 5, 2010.
While Fringe Benefits is a straight contemporary romance, she writes in a variety of genres, including paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection.
After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor in addition to writing fiction. She lives with her husband and an explosively fluffy Pomeranian mix. Her house is pink, but don’t hold that against her.
Zoe Sandoval may be the prima in waiting for her clan but she feels like a prisoner. When she takes her destiny into her own impatient hands, she lands herself in real hot water and lets loose a malformed entity into the world. It seems fixated on her and appears to be stalking her and females who look like her. Her family call in Evan McAllister, a spell fixer, to track down the entity to dispose of it.
He really shouldn't be finding Zoe to attractive. He still feels raw after his exs betrayal, he really should not like the feisty little firecracker!
Another fab episode in the Witchy world of Cleopatra Hill. Evan is a great alpha hero but with a seriously soft centre! Zoe wants to help her clan but doesn't understand why she has to hitch herself to someone fate decides is perfect for her, what about what she wants! I dare you not to fall in love with "Levi"! He is such a naive persona and I can't wait to see what happen to him!!!
I am vascillating between 3 and 4 stars on this one. I found the heroine to be on the shallow side, and the "problem" being tackled rather ridiculous. However, as usual, Pope's writing is so smooth and editorially free of errors, that I enjoy reading whatever she writes. And I did like the romance and the pace in which it unfolded.
Zoe Sandoval is the prima in waiting for the de la Paz wizarding family. She is also frustrated by the fact she still hasn’t met her consort. She has had to kiss so many guys, as is the tradition and requirement for finding this special man for her future. Well not willing to keep waiting Zoe decides to use some old magic from a spell book. Oops!! Not a great idea and the results are terrifying. Evan McAllister, of the McAllister clan is called upon to try and sort Zoe’s mess out. The story is enjoyable and moves well, as we read how Evan and Zoe must try and eliminate the creation Zoe brought into existence. All sorts of mayhem befalls the warlock and witch as nothing seems to get rid of the creature. All the while Zoe and Evan realize they are not just fighting the creature, but possible feelings for each other. A great story and a very satisfying and wonderful end for all involved. This book had entertaining moments, but the plot seemed too drawn out. There were moments when I skimmed through the page just to get moving along and didn't read as much as I like. Sometimes, when you have a book like this I wonder if reading two at a time is worth it. But then, would you make it back to the more boring one? Probably not.
Christine Pope's Cleopatra Hill series has had books that were truly entertaining and then there were those who she should have combined to make a better story ever though two plots were involved. At this stage, those plots were not too complicated to be able to follow.
Her books are light, fun reading, and sometimes to slow in moving along. They are not the type of books I'd say are a must read, but if you want a book with light reading, go for it.
This is not as much of a favorite as the rest of the series but still worth reading. I loved the characters, especially Evan, and how Zoe tried to take her life into her own hands even though it epically failed. The romance is well done except they don't so much as brush fingers before their first kiss and I didn't think it would be so close to the end either. But still an interesting installment in the series.
Just like the rest of the series, this book does not disappoint. You find out more about the De La Paz clan and how hard finding a consort can be. You also find out a little more about Evan McAllister's past. It's nice to see the families coming together. Strange Magic keeps you intwined and interested in what is going to happen next. I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.
