New Edge-of-Your-Seat Read from an Established Romantic Suspense Author Kate O'Brien has been leading a quiet life in small-town Shelter Cove, Arkansas, for the past four years when her past suddenly comes roaring back to life. Four years ago, she and her twin sister were attacked by an elusive serial killer. Only Kate survived, and it was her drawing of the attacker--along with some last-minute evidence--that convicted the suspect. She's been in witness protection ever since, but new evidence suggests the convicted man isn't the murderer and she's been subpoenaed to testify in the new trial. Nervous about the risk, she'll only agree if the same marshal who protected her during the original trial escorts her to St. Louis. Deputy U.S. Marshal Tony DeLuca accepts the assignment to bring Kate to the trial, remembering how her strength impressed him. While in Shelter Cove, however, he gets a call from his chief, advising them to stay in Shelter Cove until a new development in the case can be straightened out. But when Kate's safety is threatened, Tony must race against the clock to keep her alive and put this ugly case to rest before anyone else gets killed.

Wow! What an intense ride! A serial killer on the loose plus a US Marshal charged to protect the only survivor equals masterfully written tension and suspense. Add in a quiet small town nestled in a mountain lake cove? The stuff of thrillers.
I love Kate’s character! Her gracious heart is evident, and so is her will to survive. As the novel progresses – while you’re gnawing your nails to the quick and frantically turning pages – we see her will to live emerge as well. Tony is a swoonworthy hero in his own right, but the connection between him and Kate is electric. Even as a friendship, the way his eyes center her when she’s feeling vulnerable – so sweet.
Nancy Mehl has done a phenomenal job in this book (and its predecessor) of creating settings and characters that heighten the tension and contribute to the helpless feeling that the reader experiences as we experience the plot vicariously through the characters. As with Fatal Frost, this story is multi-layered and dimensional. In fact, once you discover one layer, you’ve unearthed about ten more to take its place!
Bottom Line: Dark Deception is a thrilling roller coaster ride of emotion and suspense. While the romance in this particular novel is light, it is there and adds an even deeper – and more tender – layer to the already high tension. Readers will be on the edges of their favorite reading chairs from start to finish, the twists and turns of the mountain road mirroring the twists and turns of the riveting plot. The faith element to the book is authentic and sincere, as well as relevant, without being preachy. A few familiar faces from the first book return in Dark Deception, but it can be read as a standalone as well!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed with this novel. Dark Deception didn't live up to the same standards as book one in the series, which combined romance with lots of suspense and good mystery solving. While Dark Deception combined the same three components, I was frustrated by this story that I thought predictable and lacking in romantic development.
Kate O'Brien survived a brutal attack that killed her sister. Kate's testimony helped put a serial killer in jail. Now, new evidence suggest that Kate might have been wrong and her attacker has been released. U.S. Marshal Tony DeLuca is tasked with returning to Kate and convincing her to stand as a witness once again. But when Kate is kidnapped, Tony will have to uncover the truth about the Blue-Eyed Killer once and for all if he is to save her life.
Dark deception promised so much - a romance set against endless tension, and a really interesting mystery about the identify of a serial killer. Unfortunately, instead I found this novel to be really flat and uninteresting. There wasn't a lot of romance in the story. The book relies on the characters' feelings that developed during their time together the first time Kate was a witness. Now they have reconnected, but I didn't think there was enough to explain why their relationship or emotions developed further. Yes, they both experience some tough situations, but their connection didn't grab me (I'd argue there wasn't much of a connection at all). However, I did really like the conversation they had about grief and loss. It's a hard conversation and it touched on some really important topics like suicide and how that leads to more grief and loss. I thought that was the best thing in the story.
The whole book is based around building suspense. Unfortunately, I guessed who the bad guys were and why, pretty quickly, so the big twist wasn't much of a twist for me. The thing that really ruined both the suspense and mystery was the incompetence of everyone, especially Tony. Can I just say, if I needed protection I wouldn't want my life in the hands of these people. Tony was forever disregarding orders and standard procedures, saying he was all about following his instincts but ignoring his gut feelings, being totally unaware of his surroundings, judgemental of people, or just generally being really annoying. And he wasn't the only one. Like the guy who says, oh by the way here is some really important information someone told me to give to you that will solve the case, but I forgot. Whoops. No wonder the boss of these guys is so angry all the time! The only person who did any decent detective work was small-town policeman Leon. I really liked Leon and I enjoyed his sections in the story - they saved me from not finishing this book at all. The ending was also disappointing, I thought. The reader is given a conclusion, but it comes right at the very last second and, once again, is down more to chance than good detective work.
Overall, I was sadly disappointed in this book. Hopefully other readers will enjoy it, but it wasn't the right book for me.

Once you turn that first page you will begin a ride with you heart in your throat, from beginning to end. “Who’s on first” came to mind as the list of characters on-folds and then changes, evil personified, and they find one another. The terror begins when Kelly O’Brien is murdered in front of her sister Kate, who is also left for dead, but Kate is a survivor. She has forged through two trials and now a third looms, can she do it again? She has been under witness protection and hiding in Shelter Cover Arkansas, a picturesque village in the mountains. Now U. S. Marshall Tony Deluca has taken on the job of trying to persuade her to return to testify, but he has personal feelings for Kate, but he is a lot older than her, and ethics takes a place here, but he does need to protect her. Once one shoes drop be prepared for them to keep falling right to the very last page, one action paced read and you will never see most of it coming. This story is so good, you are going to have a hard time believing it isn’t real, or is it. I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.
A nail-biting thriller that kept me riveted (and checking my windows and doors to make sure they were locked!) The intricate plot includes some fascinating police procedurals that had me puzzling over clues right along with law enforcement. Mehl masterfully pulls all the pieces together at a tantalizing pace -- not too fast, not too slow. There's plenty of time to ponder and figure things out while looking askance at something a character says or jumping out of your skin when the hero or heroine gets that edgy feeling. I was on tenterhooks the whole read!
Kate's personal journey really made an impact on me. She has been through something so horrendous it's hard to grasp and she's done an admirable job of getting on with her life - battling the darkness by holding it at bay. It isn't until she reconnects with Tony that she discovers burying the past isn't the same as getting through it. What results is an astounding faith journey that brings her peace at last.
A compelling addition to the Defenders of Justice series. This is Book Two in the series but reads easily as a standalone. Looking forward to the release of Blind Betrayal next spring.
The action and suspense is intense in the addition to the series involving the US Marshals officers in the St. Louis area. A serial killer known as the Blue Eyed Killer, or B.E.K., and serving time in prison has been shown by new evidence to not be the killer linked to two crimes he was accused of and he is out of prison. One witness, Kate O'Brien, entered the WITSEC program and is now living under another name as a cafe' owner in Shelter Cove, Arkansas. US Deputy Marshal Tony DeLuca worked with Kate and goes to get her to testify at a new trial. But things are put on hold when the killer, Alan Gerard, disappeared. Kate and her twin sister Kelly were attacked by Gerard in their apartment. Kelly died and Kate was injured badly. Tony is in limbo in Shelter Cove awaiting directions but things went downhill. This is a wild ride of a thriller as Tony is drugged and Kate is taken. In the meantime, Tony's boss and other officers are investigating a plethora of clues that lead them to boys who are friends in high school-bad boys who maybe grew up to be bad men? No one is who they appear to be and this is a twisty plot and cast of characters that kept me guessing and the pages turning. Kate has had a crush on Tony for years and he feels very protective of her. Maybe romance in the air if they make it out alive? Tony depends on his faith in his life of danger and is a positive influence on Kate.
Well, that was annoyingly twisty. Apparently one can have too many plot twists. I got lost so many times, and by the end, I was still very confused. Who really was the villain? Tony and Kate were interesting main characters and I enjoyed their story, although I was somewhat ticked that after all they'd been through together they *still* questioned whether they loved each other. Also, I found it odd\interesting that a very Italian dude with a very Italian name (Tony DeLuca) had blond hair and blue eyes. Probably possible, but likely?
I liked that the romance didn’t overshadow the plot, and I liked that the character Kate was a suicide survivor which is not something I’ve seen in many other books of this type.
The plot was pretty exciting, but I feel the same way I felt about book 1 - there were so many characters and suspects that it was hard to keep them separate in my mind. Also, I figured out the villain pretty easily.
Overall, not my favorite suspense read, but pretty enjoyable.

Brilliant storyteller, Nancy Mehl, has once again crafted a dramatic, spine-tingling suspense—guaranteed to keep you holding on to the edge of your seat with bated breath! My emotions ran the gamut as I took a chilling roller coaster ride into the mastermind behind numerous serial killings and his intended victim, Kate O'Brien. Kate has been living a quiet life in small-town, Shelter Cove, under an assumed name, after a horrendous attack four years prior by a notorious serial killer took the life of her twin sister. Kate appears strong and whole, but much to her chagrin, handsome Deputy U.S. Marshall Tony DeLuca draws attention to the fact that she is in denial about that horrific night and needs inner healing. Tony has his own denial issues when it comes to his feelings about Kate, and protecting her is definitely in the forefront. He accepts an assignment to escort her back to St. Louis, but a new development in the case forces them to stay in Shelter Cove. However, has something sinister taken hold in sleepy little Shelter Cove...and will Tony be able stop any more killings before it is too late?
As I breathlessly turned the last electrifying page of this novel (which I finished in only 24 hours - by the way), I looked at the baseball game that was on tv and my first thought was, "Wow. Nancy Mehl has sure hit this one out of the ballpark!" The plot was so intricately detailed, I don't know how she even kept it straight! Just when I thought I had figured out who-dun-it, there was another twist to confuse my already battered brain! Mehl's expertise at writing suspense has certainly amped up a notch or two and Dark Deception just may be my favorite book of hers thus far. A heart-pounding, suspenseful read with a whisper of romance, and an inspirational thread of hope and healing throughout, Dark Deception is certainly one novel you don't want to miss!
If you want a twisty suspense designed to keep you off-kilter, this is it. Sure, if you read enough mystery/suspense, it's easy to pick up on clues so that the book is not completely one surprise after another, but it's definitely complex enough that I have trouble believing anyone could peg the entire mystery. Complex can often mean confusing, but the author does a good job of rehashing things in an orderly manner in the end so that it all makes sense.
The romance is definitely secondary to the suspense plot--just a tad to sweeten the story. I actually really enjoyed the secondary points of view this time (normally I prefer just the main characters, especially if the book is a romance, but as I said, the romance is far from the focus of the book). It reminds me of a cop show, where other members of the team are working their different angles to fill in the details and aid the characters at the center of the action. On that subject, this book would make a great thriller movie.
Thank you Bethany House and NetGalley for providing a free e-book. I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions are my own.
I enjoyed the plot and storyline of this book but I found the twists to be pretty predictable. It was okay. What I didn’t like was the amount of characters and the lack of need for the story. WAYY too many unnecessary characters to try and follow and found that the story dragged on quite a bit.
The author Nancy Mehl has done a fantastic job with Dark Deception, Book 2 of Defenders of Justice. It was a fast past read that kept me on my toes and kept me guessing. The surprise ending was great and oh so unexpected. The main character Kate O’Brien is an inspiration to all victims of violent crimes. Nancy Mehl books offer encouragement, engage you and inspire you to be a better you. I give Dark Defenders 5 stars and anxiously await book 3.
The author, Nancy Mehl, writes books of mystery or suspension with a touches of romantic interest. Often set in a small town where a strong conservative religious community abides, her stories have heretofore been quite receptive to the Christian fiction reading audience.
In the new Defenders of Justice series, we are given stories set in the average city or town and populated by characters that take the reader into emotional journeys beyond the pale. Book two exposes the raw depravity of the criminal that is the serial killer.
Dark Deception truly lives up to the title that graces the cover of the book. The story has a darkness that permeates and that embraces several planes of life. There is deception that is incomprehensible and which creates a case that proves difficult or near impossible to be solved by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
I am not fond of stories that delve into the mentally warped mind and actions of a serial killer, the emotional storm that pervades the lives of survivors, or the twisted connections lives take from youth into adulthood as a result of cruelty imposed on their childhood. While not a favorite, Dark Deception is most certainly a good read and within the bounds of acceptable Christian fiction. If readers enjoy having their mind rather immersed in the element of society that is portrayed in Dark Deception, this is definitely one to read. If readers simply want to brush shoulders a bit with suspense or mystery, then perhaps they would want something a bit milder. I did enjoy Nancy Mehl's writting and the character development was really good. I particularly enjoyed Detective Leon and his wife. I liked Tony Deluca and his penchant for sticking to Kate's situation and going the extra mile. I look forward to more from the pen of Nancy Mehl.
DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from Bethany House a division of Baker House Publishing to facilitate this review. Opinions are my own and freely given.
My thoughts: DARK DECEPTION is Ms. Mehl's latest, and the second in the Defenders of Justice series. I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did the first, though the action and suspense were still top notch and engaging. Kate is a hurting woman, hidden in the witness protection program, or so she thinks. When her sister's killer is released from prison, he denies he did it and that the real killer is dead. But some one is still out there and her life is in danger.
I did like Tony, he was real, but also hurting, like Kate. He was also confused. Torn between attraction to Kate, the truth, and direct orders, plus under attack from an unknown assailant, he didn't know where to turn.
If you like romantic suspense, pick up a copy of DARK DECEPTION. You'll be kept up late reading until the end...
There are a lot of unanswered questions causing this reader to wonder what's in store in Ms. Mehl's next book.
I received a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own. 3.5 stars.
A Fast and furious suspenseful murder mystery! Very engaging- I read it in one sitting! Interesting round characters, although not multi-dimensional.
Quite a few plot holes and incongruities, however. Bobby having the cabin key in his pocket should have been a red flag. Deputy Killion knowing that Emily was in WITSEC should have had not only a red flag waving but alarm bells ringing; NO ONE knows the identify (except perhaps the one US Marshal that placed the witness)! The DOJ that overseas the US Marshall’s was hacked??? That’s a serious breach and yet it was treated like an “oops”. Ridiculous. incredulous.
In addition to the aforementioned scenarios requiring serious suspension of disbelief, the storyline became OVER-THE-TOP convoluted. The twists were either illogical or unsurprising. All that aside, I will read more from this author because it was an engaging, fun and fast read …. and clean!
I really enjoyed this book. I hate how Kate is attacked and almost killed. I like how Tony is assigned to transfer Kate and how he helps her through everything. I hate how the Blue Eyed Killer continues with his killing. I like how the man in charge of the killer leaves Kate alone and tries to protect her. I give this book a five star rating.
The second book in this series. It can be a stand-alone read. I enjoyed the fast-paced. Things kept happening but not such that it was unbelievable. Nice side romance as well.
"Playing dead was harder than she ever could have imaged." (7)
An intense and gripping ride when readers pick up Dark Deception by Nancy Mehl. Not only in terms of suspense, there are plenty, but also the internal emotional struggle one faced after a traumatic event. That first page will already put you at the edge of your seat as the dangerous and frightful scene plays out in your mind. As we read on, I can't even imagine what our main character, Kate had gone through. It really tugs our heartstrings and feel the pain for the lost of her sister, the terror of the whole ordeal, as well as the depressed guilt of surviving.
"Even if you can't see the scars, no one gets through life unscathed . . . suicide doesn't just destroy you - it demolishes those around you. Those who love you." (85/90)
The author's presented a possibility of a difficult subject in the storyline, but did it with grace and dignity - not diminishing the desolation of what it means for those suffering as well as the love ones. I love how stories can encourage and inspire, but not be preachy. I love how it allows readers to feel for these character, and find the tenderness of life's challenges, allowing for development.
". . . acknowledging the damage in my soul wasn't weakness. it was strength. Strength faces the truth. . . and seeks real healing." (93)
A well defined package of a suspense thriller, Dark Deception hits all the marks, including bringing in familiar faces from the first book in the series. Even with the familiar faces, each book acts as a stand-alone and will not need to be read together. Readers will definitely not be disappointed.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and have not been compensated for this. This is my honest opinion.
If you like suspense then this is definitely a book for you. This is the second installment in the Defenders of Justice series, but could easily be read as a stand alone. This a fast-paced story that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. This story is set in the back woods of Arkansas in the small town of Shelter Cove where Kate O'Brien has been living for the past 4 years in witness protection. 4 years ago she and her twin sister were brutally attacked and left for dead in their apartment. Katie survived the attack and testified against her attacker then went into witness protection. Tony DeLuca works for the US Marshals and heads to Shelter Cove to transport Katie back to St. Louis. Tony has a history with Katie since he protected her during the trial. He doesn't want to see her relive the attack again, but knows that it's a necessity if they want to put Alan Gerard back in prison. Both character are strong and complex. I immediately liked both. Katie is dealing with a crisis of faith and has not dealt with her attack or her sister's death. I love how the author takes an approach on the subject of faith. She makes the entire topic more understandable. She makes the character feel so real through their raw emotions. I don't want to give anything away but with Tony's arrival in Shelter Cove the plot takes unexpected twists and turns that has both characters literally running for their lives. This is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone who loves suspense. **I received this book from the publisher as part of their book bloggers program. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Four years ago, Kate O’Brien and her twin sister were attacked by an elusive serial killer. Only Kate survived, and it was her drawing of the attacker--along with some last-minute evidence--that convicted the suspect. She's been in witness protection ever since, but new evidence suggests the convicted man isn't the murderer and she's been subpoenaed to testify in the new trial. Thus begins this suspenseful book with Deputy U. S. Marshal Tony DeLuca keeping her alive to testify. Not the best, but not bad either. There were parts that were easy to guess and other parts weren’t. But on balance, the book was suspenseful enough to hold my interest and keep me reading to the end. And Ms. Mehl threw in enough romance to keep it interesting but not so much that it was not a turnoff. I stopped reading true romance books years ago Having lost a sister I was very close to in the past year, I struggled with what it must be like to lose a twin sister. It was well depicted in the book. I felt the pain. And based on her descriptions, I could almost imagine from her descriptions what it must be like to live in a small place like Shelter Cove even though it has been more than 50 years since I spent much time in a place that small. The café would certainly be the central meeting point in the town. I do recommend the book for readers of suspense and am eagerly awaiting the next book by Nancy Mehl. I received this book in exchange for a review. The opinions are my own.
Nancy Mehl did a superb job of keeping me in suspense until the very end. Kate was such a strong character even though she didn’t always realize it, but I as the reader could definitely see her strength. And Tony. He is truly swoon-worthy and he has trouble keeping Kate in the I-need-to-keep-her-safe part of his brain. She kept creeping into his I-could-love-this-woman thoughts.
And when evidence surfaces that the man she identified as the Blue-Eyed Killer is not BEK, her world turns upside down. The mystery was great and there were some great twists in the story that I can’t tell you about, but trust me, you will not easily guess the killer. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!
This author is hit or miss for me. This book was the biggest miss of all. The storyline had potential, but it ended up being unrealistic, hokey, cheesy, and poorly written! It was like reading a children's book, except worse. Book one wasn't great, it really wasn't even good, but it was better than book two. I would not recommend either book.
Looking for a great murder mystery, suspense thriller? Then look no further than Nancy Mehl's latest novel, Dark Deception, which is the second novel in the Defenders of Justice Series. It must be read in order because the case begins in the first novel Fatal Frost. As readers take a look at the ongoing serial killer case known as the Blue Eyed Killer or B.E.K. for short, the case is just beginning for Kate O'Brien who survived the attack that should have claimed her life. She is the only witness who can identify the serial killer and now it is her turn to be a witness in putting the man behind bars.
He took the life of her twin sister Kelly, which is one of the reasons why he has been caught. Before this mistake, all the cases were cold because B.E.K. left no traces of evidence behind. It has baffled the efforts of not only the FBI but also the local police as well. She is relying on the strength from the officer responsible for ensure she remains alive and protected but will help her endure her testimony while facing the man who killed her sister and tried to kill her, U.S. Marshall, Tony DeLuca. Just as the trial is about to get underway with her testimony the courtroom erupts in gunfire as the prosecutor is murdered right before her eyes and just as he is about to kill her, Tony is able to stop the man.
As evidence begins to mount against the man convicted of being the B.E.K., Kate takes the offer to join the witness protection program and for the last four years things have been relatively calm. She has started a new life and a new name for herself. But Tony is asked to bring Kate back in, as a witness as the man convicted of multiple murders is seemingly let go for evidence that has now been tampered with rendering the conviction and arrest out of their hands. Now the killer has been released and Tony needs to find her and bring her in before the killer can locate her. It will truly be a race against time as the killer draws closer to her and the body counts begin to rise. But have they caught the right man?
I received Dark Deception by Nancy Mehl compliments of Bethany House Publishers and TLC Book Tours. This is such a great series and I only wish I had read the first novel before jumping into this one to understand not only the killer's motives, but also the efforts of the police to arrest the man they believed to be B.E.K. Rest assured, this one has another sequel at least before they catch the elusive killer and in the meantime, the body counts will continue to rise and a twisted reason for the killer to keep Kate close will be revealed. I can't wait for the third novel in this series. It had me hooked at the very beginning and couldn't put it down til I figured out what was going to happen. Such a great story line and by far one of the best murder mysteries I have read in a long time. For me, this one rates a 5 out of 5 stars.
Rating 3.5 Stars Most people had no idea of the awful things that happened in the shadows while they ate dinner with their families and complained about their boring jobs. There was another world. A dark world based on deception. One that operated outside of civility and kindness.
Kate O'Brien is now under the witness protection program. After witnessing the death of sister and her own attack, she is trying to rebuild her life after the conviction of the Blue Angel serial Killer. A serial killer who preyed on long-haired and blue eyed young woman. After several years behind bars, it looks like the killer may be set free from unforeseen circumstances. It is a race against time as the Deputy U.S. Marshal Tony DeLuca who supported Kate in the beginning is assigned to bring Kate back to St. Louis from Arkansas where she is now living her new life. DeLuca has given himself the role of Kate's protector however, his feelings for her goes deeper. Keeping their relationship on the up and up and to avoid getting emotionally involved becomes a point of contention.
With these new circumstances, the case takes a different turn and urgency to protect Kate becomes more intense. The real plot of the Blue Angel starts to reveal itself with twists and turns and the uregency of time that becomes a matter of life and death.
I was surprised with the urgency of this thriller and it being a Christian theme even made it that much better. Avoiding the ugly evil details in some books in the same genre, was a pleasant change from being bombarded with evil details. Kate struggled with her Christianity and who would not with all that she had been through but in her struggle she discovered some truth to who God is and her relationship to the one who holds all things. One of her struggles was with fear and how her fear blocked her ability to connect to God. As a victim, she survived and her sister was killed and to reconcile God to that was a painful process. Tony character with his strong faith helped along that process as well. Tony keeping Kate safe he had to remember the character of God and his own limitations. As a Christian, there is something here for any heart that desires to trust in the sovereignty of God.
A Special Thank You to Bethany House Publishers and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
With a name, like Dark Deception, I knew the book was going to be twisted complex, and author Nancy Mehl did not disappoint. This being the first book of Mehl that I had picked up, I wasn't sure what to expect.
But, Mehl constructs strong characters and interesting perspectives. I cannot remember the last time I read about the U.S. Marshal office. She starts the book off with a huge twisting plot that I didn't see coming. I thought it would be a transitioning story for a witness, not death at every doorstep.
The beginning of the book is shocking and grabs your attention. The actions grab you and keep you entranced. I love stories that keeps you turning pages and skipping sleep to finish chapters.
One of those chapters contained a conservation between the two main characters, Kate, the witness, and Tony, the Marshall. I'm not going to ruin the conservation too much, but they get on the subject of suicide and suicide attempts. Mehl offers a variety of opinions and knowledge that probably stems from her background in social work. The entire subject made a lot of sense and offers different perspectives than I've heard in the past. It was a refresh conversation and I believe the author communicates her beliefs well.
But, just like an story, there were parts of it that I found hard to believe or just frustrated with.
For example, in the middle part of the book, Mehl tells the reader what they should be seeing or experiencing instead of presenting those in different ways through the senses. That's a huge inconvenience to me a reader because I know I can make those connection if given the chance.
Mehl would also states the obvious a lot for example like being in a trunk or that the kidnapper wanted to harm her. I had a couple duh moments when I was reading. Readers can make connections to the actions. It's like the author is trying too hard to make the reader see the scene.
Overall, I liked the book, the plot, and the characters. I cannot say that I'm completely sold by the author though. I probably won't pick up another book, but this was a good surprise. I'd give this story three out of five stars.
I received this book from Bethany House Publishing for a honest review.
A fast paced, gripping story that will leave readers wanting more until the very last page. By far the best I have read by Nancy Mehl.
After surviving an attack by a serial killer four years ago, Kate O’Brien has been living a quiet life in the small town of Shelter Cove, Arkansas in the witness protection program. It has been a struggle to get her life back to something she can be happy with, especially in the beginning when she wanted to end it all. The man that attacked her has been in prison, but now there is new evidence showing he might not be the murderer. Kate is subpoenaed to testify in the new trial. Afraid to face her past, Kate refuses to go until Tony DeLuca, the deputy Marshal who was assigned to protect her during the original trial, comes to escort her back. This is one assignment Tony has no problem taking. He has had a hard time getting over Kate O’Brien. She made an impression on him and he hasn’t been able to get her out of his mind. As Tony arrives and prepares to take Kate back, the case takes an interesting turn that ends up putting both him and Kate in danger.
I have been a fan of Nancy Mehl for a while now and I must say that Dark Deception is her best yet. The character development and the situations they found themselves in were what I enjoyed the most. Part of it could be that that Kate is a twin and so am I. Seeing how Kate had to deal with that loss was played out really well. A few instances with Tony could have been fleshed out better to make him more believable in his role. But other than that, I don’t have many negatives to say about this book. The scenes were tight, the characters were written to play out as I felt they actually would, and the suspense was very well written. It can be difficult writing romantic suspense and find the right balance between the two in order to keep the story flowing just right. With each book, I feel Mehl is getting better and better at fining that stride and getting the dynamic just right. I recommend this book to fans of Mehl and romantic suspense novels that will keep you guessing till the end.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.
Having never read anything by Nancy Mehl before, I had no idea what to expect. (Okay, so the title and cover gave me some idea - but I didn't know what to expect.)
Dark Deception revolves around Kate O'Brien, a young woman who survived the attack of a serial killer - an attack that took her twin sister's life. Kate's testimony puts the Blue-Eyed Killer behind bars, and she goes into the witness protection program. However, there are new developments in the case, and now Alan Gerard - the supposed Blue-Eyed Killer is a free man - a free man with a vendetta...
I won't go into any more details regarding the plot, but I did really enjoy the read. The story might not be original, but it was very well executed. It didn't feel forced or contrived, twists and turns developed authentically, and the characters felt very real. There were a lot of characters to keep track of - but I enjoy that, others might find it frustrating? But I found that each had a part to play, they weren't tacked on to purposefully confuse the reader.
Character development was natural; so was the characters' journey with God. I've read a few other reviews that say they were disappointed there wasn't enough romance. I disagree, in fact, it never really crossed my mind that there wasn't much romance - it didn't seem like the point? (Apparently, the first book in the series had more romance - also, I should mention that I didn't realize it was a 'Book 2' until I received it. But not having read the first one in the series didn't affect this book. There may be some side comments that would have more context had I read the first book? But, like I said, it didn't affect this book.) My last observation is that there is a little violence - however, I understand that it could have been a lot more graphic, but the author did not give gory details, which I appreciate.
All in all - it is a well-thought out story. It kept me interested and intrigued, and didn't leave frustrating 'loose ends.' A good, solid read.
I received a copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review.
Dark Deception starts off with an intense and fear-filled scene that chilled me down to my core. Kate O'Brien is a survivor, fighter, a warrior. She witnesses her twins brutal murder, was left to death herself but survived, and had to face the killer again and again in this haunting thriller. The personal battle she has to go through to be able to go on, accept that she is still alive, and to get over the survivor's guilt is a wearing road, yet she does champion on, with the help from the people around her and with the faith she finds in God. I wish I had read the first book in the series before I read this one, the feeling of jumping into a middle of a scene was strong here. With the generous amount of characters, keeping everything in line came to be an effort. Kate's previous connection to Tony DeLuca is referred several times, the developing relationship between them is heavily based on those previous feelings between them, and I wanted to know more about the foundation the new connection, after being apart for years, was based on. Tony DeLuca is a solid man, straight-shooter, honorable and honest. His faith in God is evident, his trust for God's guidance clear. One of the highlights of the story for me was a conversation between him and Kate, where they share their past hurt and burdens, talk about depression and suicide, when openly and honestly, they admit their brokenness and weakness and help each other to heal. The suspense in the story is convoluted and distressing. There are clues to the culprits but they lead the trail so close to the protagonists you would rather not believe them. It is twisted, dangerous, tangled mess, that brings the law enforcement to their knees. After the built up I was expecting a bit more fiery solution, but all the loose ends are tightly wrapped up in the end. An interesting faith-based romantic suspense story, volatile and deadly action and riveting mystery with a touch of romance and the characters growing and developing in their faith in God. ~ Three Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
Dark Deception Defenders of Justice #2 By Nancy Mehl
Kate O'Brien's life hasn't been the same since her twin sister was murdered before her very eyes and the murderer left her for dead beside her. After two trials she thought it was behind her as she lived out her life in WITSEC. But someone has raised questions about whether or not the man convicted on her testimony was truly the killer. And Kate is being subpoenaed for a new trial - a trial she wants no part of.
But Kate has conditions of her own if she is going to loose the demons in her life - she wants the Deputy Marshall who was there for her before to again protect her - she wants Tony DeLuca because she trusts him.
But someone is determined to silence Kate and Tony may not be able to stop them. And the evidence against Kate's would-be-killer is all based solely on her testimony, which if she is unable to provide will free a killer who may even now be after her.
This book will leave the reader wondering just who is guilty of what as a number of potential suspects comes to light. Can Tony and his team keep Kate alive long enough for the truth come to light? Or will a killer be allowed to walk free and target a new victim?
This is the second book in the Defenders of Justice series and fans of Nancy Mehl will not be disappointed in the suspense level. Nancy will definitely keep the reader guessing as to who is guilty of what as the story progresses. As one potential suspect is raised another seems even more likely. A perfect read if you want to be kept wondering into the wee hours of the night. This book is also the perfect reason to plead just one more chapter. If you haven't read the first book in the series don't worry as this book can easily be read and followed as a different set of characters is the main focus than those of the first book Fatal Frost. Get ready for some intense heart-pounding reading from the first page!

For four years Kate O’Brian has lived a quiet life in the small town of Shelter Cove, Arkansas. Kate entered the Witness Protection Program after testifying against the man who attacked her and murdered her twin sister. When her attacker is released due to faulty evidence, Kate faces a subpoena calling her back to St. Louis to testify again. U. S. Marshal Tony Deluca, who guarded Kate during the first two trials, is sent to Shelter Cove to escort her back to St. Louis. When Kate’s attacker disappears, it becomes a race against the clock to keep Kate safe and stop the Blue-Eyed Serial Killer. I recently discovered the Defenders of Justice series and I must admit that I am happy I did. This novel is the second installment in the Defenders of Justice series. In this story we have different main characters than we did in book one. There is Kate, a survivor of a vicious crime, and U.S. Marshal Tony Deluca, who helped her get through the original trials. Since the U. S. Marshals are involved in the Witness Protection Program I wasn’t surprised by the fact that Kate was in the program. I found this novel to be well written and constructed, the characters are well developed and realistic, their struggles understandable and thought provoking. I also found the age gap between the two main characters to be interesting, and I enjoyed the fact that the character of Kate was around my own age. The night that Kate was attacked, and her sister killed, was something straight out of “Criminal Minds,” though I was thankful that it was not overtly descriptive with all of the horrible things that happened to the two sisters. I love a good mystery, but, for me, the less blood and gore the better. I live between St. Louis and Arkansas, so reading about the weather in this novel, as well as in book one, was interesting. Though I have not, and hope not to, live through the any mudslides caused by torrential downpours in Arkansas. I am well aware that this does, in fact, occur and can be extremely dangerous to anyone caught out in it. These details helped bring this book to life for me. I must admit though, when Batterson seemed unaware of the danger of the mudslide issue, I was surprised. I understand that the two locations are far apart, however, it struck me as odd. As for the Blue-Eyed Killer, in the beginning of the novel, he did come off as a very realistic killer. The differences between previous cases and Kate’s attack are substantial, however, could easily be explained due to his own ignorance. Even the most careful killer is human and prone to mistakes. By the end of the novel, the Blue-Eyed Killer had moved into an almost unrealistic, unbelievable realm. Though I suppose it is possible, it seems highly unlikely. After reading book one, “Fatal Frost,” I had held some hope that my unanswered questions from that novel would be answered, in at least a small amount, in this novel but they were not, which was somewhat disappointing, though not unexpected. However, you do learn a little bit more about some of the characters in book one, and I hope the same thing will happen again in book three. I would recommend this novel to fans of Christian romantic suspense. A little bit of background on this book. This is the second book in the “Defenders of Justice” series. The first book is “Fatal Frost”
This story once again centers around the U.S. Marshall’s office and one of their Marshalls. This story is about Deputy U.S. Marshal Tony DeLuca. Tony had become involved with Kate O’Brien 4 years ago when she and her sister had been attacked by a serial killer. Much of the outcome of the trial had to do with Kate’s intervention and the killer was convicted at the trial. Now in witness protection, her past is coming back full force as it seems they may have convicted the wrong person and the killer is still out there. With a new trial looming ahead, Kate will only feel safe by having Tony at her side again. Can Tony keep Kate safe from the killer again? Will the right person finally be found and brought to justice? Don’t go hiding from this one, go BUY THIS BOOK!
I always enjoying picking up a copy of a book by Nancy Mehl. I can always count on reading a plot that stays true from start to finish, fully developed characters and suspense that would put any suspense writer to shame. Once again, I wasn’t let down. Nancy seems to tie everything together in a beautiful bow, not with characters that are flawless, but with characters and stories that are flawed just like me. Maybe that’s what makes me enjoy her books because I can identify with so many of her characters.
Is this a "Guys Book"? Serial Killer – Check! Danger around every corner – Check! Suspenseful plot that keeps you from wanting to put the book down – Check!. Definitely a book that any guy would want to get his hands on!
