The most recent installment in the Essential Poets series is a prime example of the value that this series brings to Canadian poetry. Having very little knowledge of Jay MacPherson and her work before dipping into this slender volume, I found the introduction to be incredibly valuable in better understanding the background and context in which the poems were written and the influence they have had on subsequent generations of poets.

While I found MacPherson's poetry not completely to my taste, the selection of poems and how they were structured certainly enlightened me a great deal and made evident her contribution and place in the history of Canadian poetry.
