About the author

David Nicholas received the Ph.D. in 1967 from Brown University under the supervision of Bryce Lyon. He taught at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln from 1967 until 1989, then moved to Clemson University, where he retired in 2006 as Kathryn and Calhoun Lemon Professor Emeritus of History. After beginning his career as a historian of the Flemish cities in the fourteenth century, he has more recently studied broader patterns of comparative urbanization, law, and institutions and expanded his geographic focus to include late medieval Germany. He has received grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Social Science Research Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the American Philosophical Society. Professor Nicholas has written numerous book chapters and articles in such journals as The American Historical Review, The English Historical Review, Revue Belge de Philologie et d’Histoire, Past and Present, and Annales. Το ότι θεωρούμε τον σχηματικά αποκαλούμενο "Μεσαίωνα" ως κάτι σκοτεινό και οπισθοδρομικό, ειδικά σε σχέση με ότι επακολούθησε, δεν αναιρεί ούτε ότι δεν υπήρχαν εξελίξεις σε όλους τους τομείς της ζωής, ούτε ότι ο κόσμος έμεινε τόσο στάσιμος όσο κάποιοι διατείνονται. Είτε μέσω παραδειγμάτων προς αποφυγήν είτε ως μικρό θεμέλιο μίας κατοπινής εξέλιξης, ο μεσαιωνικός κόσμος κατέχει κεντρική θέση και όποιος ενδιαφέρεται για την ευρωπαϊκή ιστορία δεν μπορεί να αμελεί την μελέτη του.

Το παρόν βιβλίο είναι πληρέστατο στην ευσύνοπτη βέβαια ανάλυσή των βασικότερων τομέων της ζωής τότε. Πολιτική, γεωργία, θρησκευτικές έριδες, τεχνολογικά βήματα, τέχνη κτλ. Το ύφος είναι ακαδημαϊκό αλλά προσιτό και το βιβλίο αποτελεί εξαιρετική εισαγωγή σε μία ιστορία αιώνων.

This book can be truly enjoyed by people who possess a great bit of knowledge about the Middle Ages. Personally, I know that well only "The Hundrend Years' War" and the madieval markets,which were(by the way) the only chapters I could follow. As for the others,I had to read and reread the same sentence at least 2 times in order to truly understand what was going on. In my humble opinion this book should not be marketed as an introductory one in the madieval history.

Παρόλο τον όγκο του (700 σελίδες), διαβάζεται πολύ εύκολα γιατί τα κεφάλαια είναι χωρισμένα σε μικρές ξεκάθαρες ενότητες με απλή και περιεκτική γραφή.

Περιεκτικό αλλά εξαιρετικά πυκνογραμμένο, σε μία πρόταση συχνά θίγονται πολλά διαφορετικά θεματα που θα έχρηζαν αναλυτικότερης παρουσίασης.Ο εξελληνισμός όλων ανεξαιρέτως των δυτικών μεσαιωνικών ονομάτων και τοπωνυμίων στην ελληνική μετάφραση κάνει σε μερικά σημεία δύσκολη την ανάγνωση και την αναζήτηση περαιτέρω πληροφοριών, θα μπορούσε να δίνεται ως υποσημείωση και ο αντίστοιχος λατινικός όρος. Κατα τα άλλα ένα έργο σταθμός για την κατανόηση του Μεσαίωνα στην Ευρώπη.
